Elements: The Gathering

by Andersen Teoh, Evan Colenbrander, Pranav Pannala, and Ryan Miller

Terms
1. Static: Turned sideways after doing an actions displaying that they can not do another action. All cards are
turned back at the start of one's turn.
2. Energetic: Vertical
3. Reaction: Card played to be used as a resource to play other cards. (suns, supernovae, and the particle
accelerator)
4. Element: A card played with an atomic number (attack) and an amount of neutrons (health) used to deal
damage to an opponent and block other elements attacks.
5. Cost: List of lands that must be turned static to play a card. (found on top right of card)
6. Flight: An element that cannot be blocked by anything other than other flight and reach elements. (all noble
gases)
7. Reach: Can defend against flight elements. (all other gases)
8. Death touch: Defeats any other element no matter their health (radioactive elements)
Actions
1. Mulligans are something done at the start of the game. The game begins with both players drawing 7 cards and
they can choose to mulligan by putting their hand into their deck, shuffling it and then drawing an amount of
cards one less than the amount of cards you had in hand.
2. Start each turn by drawing one card and turning all of your cards energetic.
3. Play a maximum of one reaction per turn. Suns are costless, but Supernovas and Particle accelerators have
cost. Suns come in energetic, but supernovas and particle accelerators are played static.
4. Play any amount of elements per turn. Have to turn reactions static for each element based on their cost (found
on top right of card).
5. After you have finished placing cards, you may choose to attack. You may only attack with elements that have
been played on previous turns. Attacking uses up the element’s energy and it becomes static. After you attack
your opponent they have the option to block. They can only block with energetic elements by placing them in
front of the elements they want to block. The elements then lose health equal to the amount of total attack
going into them. If the attack is greater than health the element dissolves. It goes out of play in a pile to the
side (or graveyard). If an element is not blocked your opponent loses health equal to its attack. Each player
starts with a total of 118 health and lose the game when they reach 0
Actions pt. 2
1. You can also perform nucleosynthesis and or combine elements using a particle
accelerator. Nucleosynthesis costs one sun and combines one hydrogen with another
one or a helium atom with any element before 24. A Particle Accelerator can combine
any two elements.
2. Combined elements are equivalent to the element with atomic number of the proton
of the two elements combined. Check the element key to find out its stats.

Three Main Topics Addressed in
Our Card Game
Stellar Nucleosynthesis:
Elements 1 through 26 (Hydrogen - Iron) are created through stellar nucleosynthesis

Cards can be combined using Suns to create new elements

When an element below 26 (i.e Lithium) is combined with

a helium atom, nucleosynthesis comes into effect, creating

a new element that has an atomic number 2 higher than the

element originally used to make it (Lithium -> Boron).

Supernovas:
Because the creation and fusion of new elements in supernovas is extremely complex,
we could not accurately represent this process in our card game.

Instead, we made the elements starting in the deck with atomic numbers between
27-92 (the naturally created supernovae elements) cost supernova to play, rather than
involve the fusion reaction in the game.

While supernovae are not actually created by combining

5 suns (it’s actually just one sun at the end of its life cycle),

it was needed to balance the game and make it more fun to play.
Particle Accelerators:
Particle accelerators are man-made structures meant to synthesize elements with
higher numbers of protons than the naturally created ones (currently, 93-118).

They bombard a single molecule of a certain element with many molecules of another
element to artificially fuse them together and make a new element.

We are assuming in our game that this process fuses the two molecules together on the
very first try.
