The Lady With the Lamp

(Florence Nightingale)

In Italia, May 12, 1820, was born a first child of Nightingale family, Florance Nightingale. Her
name is taken by her born town, Florence.
She spent her childhood time in Lea Hurst, a Fancy House that belong to her father, William
Nightingale. Florence lived in a Royal Family, her father is a Famous Landlord in London and her
mother is from royal family. She has a sister named Parthenope.
Even tho they were living in a same house, florence has a different character. Her sister
Parthenope, lived and act just like a princess, like a real princess, unlike florence, she prefered to
go out and help those who need a hand. Florence was a caring and loving person.
In the age of 26, Florence went to Germany to study about modern hospital which is running by
Catholic Nuns. She was impressed by the care and commitment from the nun to all the patient.
She fell in love in Nurse work and came back to London with all those dreams.
At the age of 31 she was proposed by Richard Moncton Milnes, An aristocracy from Baron of
Houghton. She was rejected the proposal because she wanted to serve and take care of people with
nurse treatment.
And then, one time, she told her family that she wanted to be a nurse. Her mother and sister
definitely rejected it. In that time, being a nurse is a contemptible work only elder and poor people
who want to be a nurse.
Although her family rejected her to work in hospital as a nurse, Florence still insist to go to
Kaiserwerth to learn nursing with Catholics nuns. She worked in hospital in Germany and France.
In 1853, Florence came back to London and work at the Institute for the Care of Sick
Gentlewomen, a little hospital in Upper Harley Street, London.
In October 1854, There was a war between Russia and France and London. A lot of soldiers died
and suffering in the middle of war. And the worst of all is that there is no paramedics in the field.
The News about the war is written in TIME magazine and when Florence heard about that she
offered herself to be a volunteer. She collected 38 volunteer and train them to go to Krimea.
In november 1854 they arrived at the hospital in Scutari. The condition is so much worse than
their predictions. Some of the volunteers couldn't even stand it. The corridor was full of bleeding
injured soldiers. And hundred of soldiers laid down in the yard dying with no medical treatment. It
was really awful. But Florence stand and make some change. She make a bed for soldiers in the
hospital. She did her best so all of the soldiers can have a place inside the hospital and get medical
treatment. Florence make sure that everyday they change the bandage, they got their medicine
regularly, the beds, chairs, and table cleaned up and make sure that the place around the patients is
clean. And everynight she check up all the soldiers. With only a single lamp, she went through the
corridors and check all of them. And from that Florence got the title Lady with the lamp.
Florence got famous because of what he did in the war of Krimea. When she got back to London,
many people thank her and even collect a lot of donation. Florence use the donation for making a
school of nursing. She hopes that by making this school, nurse profession will not underestimated
anymore. The school was builded in hospital area and they are so welcomed.
In July, 1860, they started to run the school. A lot of girls registered themselves to be the students
there.
The War of Krimea really change people mind set about nurse.
And today, the school named Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery) and this
school is part of King College Academy in London.
And after that Florence wrote a lot of books about nursing and
And in 1869, Florence and Elizabeth Blackwell builded a Woman Medic University.
She got a lot of appreciation even from the Queen.
And finally, at the age of 90, August 13, 1910, she took her last breath. She was buried in St.
Margaret Church in East Wellow, Hampshire, Inggris.
Even though Florence wasn't here anymore, her spirit of care and serve are still alive and it should
be alive inside all of us. The End.

Moral value of the story : As a nurse, a paramedic, we should have Florence spirit to take care of
people despite of our duty as nurse but because we care about their life, because they need our
help to make them feel better, to heal them. So, be a caring, strong, loving and a responsible nurse.
Thank you.
