NRS 209 COURSE REFLECTION
This class was called Intro to Health Assessment. It taught us the basics of nursing and

how to do simple assessments. It helped further my career and expand my knowledge of

proper nursing practices. This class was beneficial to me for many reasons. We always had

various assignments due, ranging from workbook assignments, tests, quizzes and even a couple

papers. These all have helped a lot to further my education.

In this class I learned how to properly perform a head to toe assessment with

acknowledgement of normal vs common abnormal findings, as well as a vital sign competency. I

learned proper communication techniques as well as how the interdisciplinary team works

together in meeting the patient goals. We learned many assessments, how to communicate,

physical and psychosocial findings, and using health histories to help determine the proper care

for the patients. This class also introduced me to the use of care plans. These were difficult for

me, but I feel that I have gotten better of the semester.

A large topic that we use in nursing and that we learned in this course was clinical

judgement, health promotion, and communication. Clinical judgement is used by the nurse to

prioritize patient care. They use their judgement of the health problems to make a decision to

take proper action. Communication is used between everyone in the interdisciplinary team as

well as to the patients. We use communication to create, interpret and exchange ideas,

emotions, and feelings. Health promotion enables patients to control their health, we educate

the patient and promote healthy habits.

We learned a lot of information in the class, it was difficult especially at the beginning of

the course to learn how to do everything online and then lab with social distancing. I feel that

we have come a long way since the beginning of COVID-19. The way the class was set up was

beneficial especially if we were to have gone 100% remote.

One assignment that we did was the nutrition assessment, my assessment was over the

infant group. In this assessment we discussed what normal routines are for an infant, normal

characteristics of the age group, did a 24-hour recall on my niece. This assessment allowed me

to do comparisons on children who were breast fed versus children who were bottle fed. It

allowed me to compare the pros and cons of each. I feel that this assessment was paired with

the BSN Program Outcome #3: Leverage information technology to maximize wellness across

populations, through health promotion and disease management, with the core ability of

Demonstrate Information Literacy.

Overall, all of the assignments and competencies that we completed this semester

helped me understand the different course objectives set out for the BSN program. This was a

good introduction nursing course. I enjoyed my first semester in nursing class/lab and my

clinical experience. I am excited to keep moving forward.
