Subject Entry Requirements
All Subjects Min C in SPM or its equivalent

3 Sciences – only Extended

papers (O’ Levels) are
accepted

Mathematics Min C in SPM or its equivalent

(Mathematics & Additional
Mathematics)

43
 Select one subject combination that has all
the subjects you intend to do
 Minimum subjects – 3;
maximum subjects – 4
(not inclusive of TS and English)
 4 subjects are strongly recommended if you
plan to apply to top universities/courses
 Thinking Skills offered at AS level only

44
 A-Level Maths normally requires a
background in Add Maths or its equivalent.

 All A-Level science subjects require suitable

backgrounds.

 Our A-Level arts & humanities subjects do

not require backgrounds. Decent
mathematical skill is advantageous for
Accounting and Economics.

45
Necessities
 For Medicine, Dentistry, Health Science,
Nutrition & Dietetics, Pharmacy: Chemistry.
USUALLY another Science subject is required,
preferably Biology. Nearly all Scottish
universities require Physics as well.

 For Engineering: Maths & Physics (except Civil

Eng.). Sometimes another Science subject is
required.

46
 For Actuarial Science: Maths. Further Maths is
NOT compulsory, but advantageous.

 For ALL arts courses: in most cases, NOTHING.

There are usually NO prerequisites for
studying Arts. However, CERTAIN EXCEPTIONS
EXIST, e.g. for Economics at Oxbridge both
Economics & Maths are required.

47
How Should You Choose?
 If possible, don’t just focus on necessities and/
or recommended subjects; think about your
strengths & weaknesses.
 Think also about each subject’s characteristics
& requirements – whether more language
ability is needed, whether mathematical
aptitude is essential, etc.
 There are no easy subjects at A-Level.

48
Do Your Research
 The official CIE website,
www.cambridgeinternational.org/
 - syllabuses, a few past-year papers, etc.

 Possible/confirmed universities’ websites:

courses, requirements, etc.

 Entrance examinations websites: for which

courses/universities?
49
Important!
While we counsel and guide you in choosing
appropriate subject combinations, you are
strongly advised to carry out whatever
research is necessary, as

 tertiary course requirements can change

over time,
 and universities can differ greatly with
regard to standards and preference.

50
 By 7 October 2019 , you must finalize your
subject combinations/choices.

 Within that time you may change your

combinations.

 Consult your teachers if in doubt.
