 Explain the origin of community sociology.

 Define community development within the interactional approach.

1) The origins and earlier understandings of community sociology was dominated by ideas
of stable social systems interacting with one another. However, in the 1950’s and 60’s it
became more and more clear that communities could not be defined in such a
structured, consistent way. Post World War II changed so much about American life,
and eventually it got to the point where people could be involved in more than one
community at once with the rise of phones, TV, internet, etc. The interactional
approach is what came after the systems approach clearly wasn’t reading anymore.

2) The interactional view of community development is centered around the interactions

between prominent members of the community rather than groups and organizations in
the community. It allows for a more complex view on not only psychological, social and
economic aspects of communities and its members, but also the emergence and
development of community.
