Research Title: The Impact of Self -Care Practices to Occurrences of Diabetes
Mellitus Complications among Muslim Parents: Basis for Building a New Model of
Self Care
Proponent: Dr. Cynthia M. Filipinas, Prof. Randy Ian Gallego
Type of Project: Research Project
Venue: Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao – Lanao del Sur Public Secondary
Schools
Respondents: Muslim Parents diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus and with students
enrolled in a public secondary schools of Lanao del Sur.
Background:

Diabetes mellitus is a deficiency which results in increased concentrations of

glucose in the blood and in turn damage and cause complications in many of the
body's systems and organs particularly the blood vessels and nerves, kidney, heart
and brain. Recently compiled data show that approximately 150 million people
have diabetes mellitus worldwide, and that this number may well double by the year
2025. Much of this increase will occur in developing countries and will be due to
population growth, aging, unhealthy diets, obesity and sedentary lifestyles ( WHO,
2012). The incidence of diabetes is also rising in the Philippines. The Bohol
Standard (2008) reported in November, 2008 that one out of every five Filipinos
living in the Philippines had diabetes. (Ward, 2012)

The mainstay of non-pharmacological diabetes treatment is health promotion of

diet and physical activity and just be free from stress. The appropriate self-care

management must be stressed out to prevent complication of diabetes . Self -caring

and self-efficacy is associated with treatment satisfaction of DM ( Howorka et. al

2000). Engaging in self-care makes the patient an active participant in the

management of illness. Self-care in diabetes has been important because the vast

majority of day-to-day care in diabetes is handled by patients and/or families. There is

an important need for reliable and valid measures for self-management of diabetes.

Through this study, the researcher will try to define new self-care or build a new

model of self-care management for DM client. Validating some patient’s traditional /

culturally related health care practices is also one of the main goal of this study.

Objectives:

1. to determine the self care practices of muslim parents respondents diagnosed

to be with DM in terms of diet, exercise, medication compliance, sugar
monitoring, coping skills
2. to determine the socio demographic profile of DM clients including cultural
practices of self caring as a DM person.
3. to identify the sources of information regarding self-care practices
4. to detect complications of DM as experienced by the clients respondents
5. to know how the self care practices influence the occurrence of complications
of DM .
6. to construct a new model of care and protocols for self care practice to prevent
DM complications.
7. To transform a self-care model and protocol to a school based self-caring anti
DM program that can be developed and eradicate cases or lower the cases of
DM complications among parents.
Significance of the study
1. The study will result to a development of a new model of self caring practices
attuned to the culture of the respondents
2. Appropriate health education program , trainings and protocol can be drafted
and be recommended for coordination practices and control the rising DM
cases
3. The study may lower the cases of DM and its complications in the province.
4. The structured health teaching protocol can be developed into a school based
Anti DM program. In this program the role of students and teachers is very
crucial.
Methodology of the Study
1. Research design : Mixed method : descriptive correlational, ethnographic –
2. Respondents: To be conducted among diabetic parents with a child enrolled in
a secondary public schools in Lanao Sur.
3. Instrument: questionnaire utilizing rubrics ; interview, observation checklist
field notes

consulted )
