Q. 1. Explain the following, giving reasons :

(i) When monochromatic light is incident on a surface separating two media, the reflected and refracted
light both have the same frequency as the incident frequency.
(ii) When light travels from a rarer to a denser medium, the speed decreases. Does this decrease in speed
imply a reduction in the energy carried by the wave?

Q. 2

(a) Calculate the distance of an object of height h from a concave mirror of radius of curvature 20 cm, so as to
obtain a real image of magnification 2. Find the location of image also.
(b) Using mirror formula, explain why a convex mirror always produces a virtual image.

Q. 3. Use the mirror equation to deduce that

(a) an object placed between f and 2f of a concave mirror produces a real image beyond 2f.
(b) a convex mirror always produces a virtual image independent of the location of the object.
(c) the virtual image produced by a convex mirror is always diminished in size and is located between the focus
and the pole.
(d) an object placed between the pole and focus of a concave mirror produces a virtual and enlarged image.

Q. 4. Double-convex lenses are to be manufactured from a glass of refractive index 1.55, with both faces of the same
radius of curvature. What is the radius of curvature required if the focal length is to be 20 cm

Q. 5. Draw the intensity pattern for single slit diffraction and double slit interference. Hence, state two differences
between interference and diffraction patterns.

Q. 6

(i) State law of Malus.

(ii) What is the value of refractive index of a medium of polarising angle 60°?

Q. 7. In double-slit experiment using light of wavelength 600 nm, the angular width of a fringe formed on a distant
screen is 0.1°. What is the spacing between the two slits?

Answer

Q. 1. Explain the following, giving reasons :

(iii) When monochromatic light is incident on a surface separating two media, the reflected and refracted
light both have the same frequency as the incident frequency.
(iv) When light travels from a rarer to a denser medium, the speed decreases. Does this decrease in speed
imply a reduction in the energy carried by the wave?

Ans.

(i) Frequency and wavelength of light are related as v = n λ where v is the velocity of light. As the wave travels from
one medium to another, the wavelength of light changes with change in the speed of light with it. The frequency
remains constant. [1]

(ii) The energy of wave depends only on its frequency. Since the frequency does not change as wave travels from
one medium to another, therefore, the energy of the wave remains same and does not decrease. [1]
