PROBLEMS BASED ON PHASE

DIAGRAM.
1) The volume change in a phase transition is
zero. How the phase diagram can be
represented?
Soln:
Given:
∆V=0
To find : phase diagram
Soln: by clausius clapeyron equation
dp/dt=∆H/T*V
also w.k.t slope =tan Ɵ
dp/dt =∆H/T*0
=∞, tanƟ=∞
Ɵ=1/tan
Ɵ=90˚
Hence the phase diagram is

1
2) Phase diagram of a compound is shown
below

The slope of the lines OA, AC, & AB tan π/4, tan π/6, tan
π/3 respectively.if the melting point and ∆H of the melting
are 300K & 3KJ/mol respectively calculate the change in
volume of melting.

Given

Slope OA =tan π/4

Ac =tan π/6
AB =tan π/3

Temperature (T)=300K
∆H=3KJ/mol

=3000J/mol

2
To find

Change in volume of melting (∆V)

Soln:

The reaction occurs from A B ( i.e melting )

Slope AB
By clausius clapeyron equation
dp/dt=∆H/T*V
by substituting the values we get
dp/dt =tan π/3
tan π/3 = 3000/300* ∆V

∆V=10* 1/tanπ/3
1/tanπ/3 = cot π/3

∆V = 10 Cot π/3

Hence the change in volume of melting from A to B is 10 cot π/3
