PROBLEM 1:
In 2013, the number of students in a small school is 284. It
is estimated that the student population will increase by 4% each
year. Estimate the student population in 2020.

GIVEN:
𝑎1 = 284 r = 4% 1.04 n=8

FORMULA:
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 (𝑟)𝑛−1

SOLUTION:
𝑎7 = 284 (1.04)7
𝑎7 = 284 (1.32)
𝑎7 = 374
PROBLEM 2:
A business starts a new website. Initially the number hits in
293 due to the curiosity factor. The business estimates the number
of hits will increase in 2.6% per week. Estimate the number of
hits in 5 weeks.

GIVEN:
𝑎1 = 293 r = 2.6% 1.026 n=6

FORMULA:
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 (𝑟)𝑛−1

SOLUTION:
𝑎6 = 293 (1.026)5
𝑎6 = 293 (1.14)
𝑎6 = 334
PROBLEM 3:
You go to your dentist and notice that those ‘ well
trained’ appointment secretaries want to know what kind of
insurance you have: if you have that that blue cross blue shield,
they will apply that top rate and ( nicely) will add those x- ray
sessions, without minding what was the problem from the start.
You certainly feel ripped off and pass the word. You tell to 5
friends at work that this dentist from the directory they gave you
at work really sucks. Those five friends will pass it along to
other 5 of their own. The negative response will affect the
dentist at the end of the month: that receptionist will be
terminated and your former dentist, will start promoting his/her
service with free whitening interventions. Estimate the number
of people who will know that the dentist from the directory is
not good in 4 months.

GIVEN:
𝑎1 = 1 r=5 n=5

FORMULA:
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 (𝑟)𝑛−1
SOLUTION:
𝑎5 = 1 (5)4
𝑎5 = 625

Since the comment is negative or against the dentist, the series

will also became negative.

-625, -125 , -25 , -5 , -1
