¿What is the skimming?
Basically, the skimming is
reading a text quickly to get
a general idea of meaning. It
can be contrasted
with scanning.
It is an easy technique than
can be used to take the main
ideas from a text very
quickly without reading all
the words because it has to
be in a really short time.
For example, a chemical
engineer receives a document
from his boss, he doesn´t have
enough time so, he stars
skimming the document to get
a main idea about it so now
he can see that it is about a
new substance recently
discovered which is important
for his job so he starts reading
the document carefully
¿What is the scanning?
Scanning is reading a text
quickly in order to find
specific information, e.g.
figures or names. It can be
contrasted with skimming,
which is reading quickly to get
a general idea of meaning.
The scanning is about trying to
find very specific information
without reading everything.
For example, in the chemistry
area, a student needs to find
the name and characteristics of
a substance quickly to
participate in the class so the
student stars scanning the text
to find the specific information
of the substance
