RC (3) – Design of Shear Walls - Assignment

The given figure shows a plan of a building having a height of 49.0 m above the
foundation. The building is located in Egypt in a region of high-seismic action. The
earthquake load acting in the X-direction equals to 7400.0 kN (ultimate value). The
earthquake acting in the Y-Dir. has an ultimate value of 6600.0 kN. The thickness of
all walls equals to 350.0mm. The unsupported height of the wall at the critical region
equals to 3.5m. It is required to:

1- Distribute the earthquake load acting in the X-direction among the resisting
elements. Find the bending moment acting on each element at F.L.
2- Distribute the earthquake load acting in the Y-direction among the resisting
elements. Find the bending moment acting on each element at F.L.
3- Perform a complete flexure and shear design for Walls W1 and W3 at the
critical region knowing that the factored values of the normal forces acting on
them during the earthquake equal to 8000.0 kN and 11000.0 kN, respectively.
Draw to a Scale 1:20 the cross sections of Walls W1 and W3 showing the
reinforcement details.
4- Design the shear reinforcement of the core CR1 in both directions at the critical
region. Draw to a Scale 1:20 the cross section of the core showing the designed
shear reinforcement as well as a proposal for the vertical reinforcement.
Reasonable values for the vertical reinforcement should be based on the
guide-lines given in Clause 6-8-3-3 of the ECP203-2007.
fcu = 30 N/mm2 fy = 400 N/mm2

Note: Slight modification to the concrete dimensions of walls is allowed only if

needed.
Due to symmetry, Ex is to be distributed among resisting elements in X-dir. And
Ey is to be distributed among resisting elements in Y-Dir.
