HEY DUDE, I WANT MY 80’S MODEL KITS BACK PRONTO-LIKE TOTALLY

I’ve spent considerable time here lamenting about how most of my original model kit
collection from the 70’s was absconded with when I left for college in August 1977, at the
hands of my brother and his teeny dweeb buddies. So, too, I’ve complained about how I had to
sell my second collection, lovingly gathered from 1987 to 1997, to pay bills after I lost my office
administration job in April 1997. Bogus, bro. I’ve given you a play by play of most kits I’ve
gathered since September 1997 to present, all 900 of them. If it reads as if I’ve bragged at times
about my third and present collection, I’m sorry. To the kit collection buyer goes the spoils!
Like, to the max!
I’ve now accumulated about 95 percent of the kits from my childhood that I wanted,
plus many more I missed the first time around. This 20 year search has left me freaked out at
times and alone to ponder just when am I going to throw in the towel and be happy with what I
have now, realizing the 20 or so kits I’ve been chasing around are too expensive and scarce to
ever obtain.
There is a solution, though. Get a new towel! If I can’t have everything from the 60’s and
70’s I want, why not go after the 80’s stuff from my second collection? Big time! Think about it,
80’s kits aren’t anywhere as near as desirable as 60’s and 70’s stuff, but there’s still some
goodies out there. For years I’ve beefed about the decline in the kit industry from the mid 70’s
to the late 90’s, but on second thought things weren’t as awful as I originally stated. So what if
pollution controls and recessions stifled American car makers, with the model industry
mirroring this downward spiral. As is our nature, we make the best of it and move on. For sure.
Okay, so I’m getting an appetite to get some, but not all of my second collection back.
Since I’m out of room in the basement and bedroom for my stash, where will it go? It just so
happens our kids have moved out, leaving a small bedroom made up as a spare for rare visitors
to our home. Remarkably, it looks like a room in the Bates Motel, without Norman and his
“sharpies.” Just steak knives here, not even a semi lethal ginsu set. On the other hand, the
master bedroom is just sitting there, begging for some goodies to populate it. Don’t tell the
wife. She’s bitchin!
I’ve given too much thought about what I really want back but here are some ideas:
Gotta have my MPC 80’s Mustangs back, at least some of them. Most definitely! I had a
healthy number of these back then, going from the 80 Cobra to the Wild Breed from the late
70’s. I don’t need the Wild Breed back yet, or the pace car, but the GT’s would be a welcome
addition. In particular, the 83 to 85’s were beloved and had great box art. I didn’t build any, as
has been the case with most of my present collection. I don’t need the SVO’s back either, but
maybe in the future. I also had a McLaren Mustang from Revell, but right now I’m kind of on the
fence with that one. Not a great kit, but interesting subject matter.
Want more MPC’s? Who doesn’t! How radical! How about the Wheeler Dealer Monte
Carlo with cycle? The original kit is still desirable, even though it’s been reissued. But who
would want a Cavalier kit? Not many people 20 years ago, recalling how tough of a time I had
disposing of these kits. Bogus.
 In 2019, the car looks like a time piece, so I’m ready to get my 82 J car back (this one’s
blue on the cover). I recently picked up an MPC Sslasher 72 Chevelle, a cool kit and getting quite
rare. Wish it was molded like the car on the cover, a root beer brown, but the plastic is molded
in black. I’m still happy to have it. As a kid, I had the original 72 GTO, molded in two tone
brown. I loved mine and kept it a long time. When I got back into the hobby in 1987, the
original was ridiculously expensive, so I had to settle for kit 1-0748, the Muscle Car reissue of
this kit. I see these kits occasionally and they are still affordable. This is one I don’t need back…I
now have my old original back!! Bad to the bone. Also in the category of I have something
better now is the 73-4 Super Charger, a spin off of the original kits of those years. I had a few of
these 20 plus years ago, but don’t think their a great kit. Again, who has money for the original
when you have day care bills to pay?
In the category of deplorable model kits would be the excess of Dodge Omnis MPC did
30 years ago. I had a few of these in the 90’s and built them. Not much you can do with these
kits and I kept a few in the past 20 years. Same with the Dodge Daytonas. A better car but
limited ideas for building. I haven’t kept any of those and don’t need them…at least now. Also
in the not needed now category would be MPC’s Cougar the Cat and 69 Firebird. The former
has been reissued and doesn’t interest me, the latter was molded in a strange blue color. One
kit I might want back eventually is the 72 Chevy Stepside pickup with cycle. Nice kit, col box art
and getting rare. Like wow, you know.
I wouldn’t mind having my 74 Plymouth GTX back. That was a cool kit, with red plastic
and tinted glass. A decent build from what I can tell, but not a wealth of parts in this one. This is
very typical of 80’s kits; cool box art but not as much substance. Speaking of Mopars, I liked
Volare kits and had a few of them. One was the 77 kit with the super pack parts, which did have
plenty of stuff in the box. I don’t feel a burning desire for that one now, but I would like a 79
Volare, which is yellow on the box cover. I don’t think I’ve ever had that one in any of my
collections, but I feel the need now…big time.
No article would be complete without mentioning AMT. My original collection had
plenty of that brand kit, and I loved it as much as MPC. I think if you left brand names off of kits
you couldn’t tell the difference between the two. I’m not much of a fan of pre WW2 kits, but I
did like the 39 Ford sedan kit 2403, molded in dark red plastic, with the same color car on the
cover. I think at some point I’ll want this kit back, but not quite yet. By the time the green light
goes on in my head, I’m sure my search will take too long. My fault. For sure. In the early 90’s, I
found out that AMT made a kit of the Ford Escort. Who would do a model of one of the worst
cars ever made? See MPC’s Vega kits…all of them. The Escort was a three in one kit with a red
car on the cover. Like the Cavalier, I’d like to see it again. I do have a few Revell Escorts in my
present collection, but the AMT would be a welcome addition. I discovered AMT’s Motor City
series kits in my second collection. There’s not much to these curbside kits, but they are easy to
build and the box art is cool. I had and liked the Ford LTD and Torino Cobra kits, so let’s add
those to my list of must have again. How righteous.
Remarkably, I’m not interested in seeing any of my Johan kits back. Most of these were
USA Oldies issues with not much to them. They did remind me of my 62 Dart from my
childhood, the only Johan kit I built…and I still have it today. I also have a built 62 Olds F85 that I
built in the 90’s. A simple build and it sits next to the Dart.
 One kit I will add to my list will be next to impossible to find, the Johan 71 Toronado
with the box art showing a stock issue car. If the Pikes Peak box art kit is hard to find, try finding
the alternate box art issue. I’ve only seen one and sold it to long time customer Jason. Memo
from Jason to Fred; I’m not selling you this kit back, sucka!
I had a modest number of Revell and Monogram kits 25 years ago, but the list of ones I
desire is fairly short. The Mustang Monroe Handler kit is a bit different, but I just sold one and
have no regrets yet. It did look good in my collection years ago, though. One I’d like back is the
Monogram Buick GSX Street Machine. I bought one of these in Toronto at a show, blown away
by the box art and decal scheme. So tubular! The decal sheet was huge and rather psychedelic,
so I had to have it. Of course, it left me for a money swap in 1997, and I’ve let go a few more of
these in the years since. The next one is mine! I bought a few reissues of Tom Daniel based kits
in my second collection, including the Bad Actor wagon, but I’m not needing any of these back.
Besides, in the past 20 years, I’ve obtained the Quicksilver, Rat Vega, Bad Man and all the other
TD kits I had and loved building. I recall having the Monogram 70 Chevelle Street Machine kit
years ago and probably will want it back again. Cool box art and goofy parts set this kit apart
from the stock issue 454, but not necessarily in a good way. I kid you not.
In my second collection, I developed an interest in Euro and Japanese kits that was
absent my first go-around. Among the few dozen I bought is one that has been on my want list
and eluded me since its departure in 1997, the Dodge Colt. This kit was an 80’s body style,
likely about 1984 to 1987, not as round as the early 80’s but similar. I never thought I’d have
such a hard time locating this kit, but in the ensuing 22 years and 200,000 kits I’ve seen it hasn’t
shown up. That’s why it’s on my primary want list. I think I had an Entex Corvair Monza kit,
which was a mistake buy. I assumed it was a Chevy Corvair, but kept the kit awhile anyway
when I found out it wasn’t. I bought, kept and built a late 80’s Mazda 323 kit. Here’s one that’s
checked off of the list. I found a better kit, with accessories, which is in my collection
somewhere in the garage.
I’m somewhat clever at naming things, occasionally vulgar or downright childish. Based
off of this, I’m naming my second want list “Fred’s Want List-the Sequel.” If any modeler ever
claims their collection is complete, that dude is likely speaking from the grave. My sequel list, as
my main want list, will never be complete until the Bills win the Super Bowl. We all know how
that’s turned out. Later, home boys.

FRED HEARTILY RECOMMENDS BUD’S CERAMIC TILE AND REMODELING, ELMA NEW YORK
I have such a hard time finding decent contractors to do work on Fred’s Model World
headquarters here in North Buffalo, NY. We’ve had interior work done in the past 20 years that
had to be redone by my wife, while our new roof, courtesy of Stockmohr, went very well. When
it became apparent that the condition of our bathroom floor could no longer be ignored, I
started to look for a contractor that could do the job and do it well. I spent hours looking for
and contacting local firms that could do this work. Most never returned my call, one did and
gave us a one line estimate on a piece of paper. He also jumped up and down on the floor and
agreed we needed a floor. Glad he wasn’t an elephant near our fence!
Finally, I found Gerry at Bud’s Ceramic Tile, who had great reviews and promptly called
me back. Gerry spent an hour here in July explaining to us what we needed, a detailed plan to
do it, and a reasonable estimate for doing the job.
 In addition to being an expert in bath remodels, Gerry also knew how to handle the
plumbing aspects of the job. Since this is the only bathroom in our home, he regretfully told us
we’d have to leave the home for three days. After much research, I found the very fashionable
Wyndham Hotel only two blocks from my wife’s work downtown. We enjoyed our stay, got to
have a few nice dinners, and didn’t worry about what was going on at home.
From September 9 to September 11, Gerry and assistant Andrew did a thorough and
professional job of removing our old floor materials down to the planking, putting in a new
base, subfloor and porcelain tile, and replacing our aging toilet. They showed up on time,
worked efficiently, and explained to me step by step what they were doing. They were
courteous, prompt, friendly and professional in every way. Some remodeling stories have a
miserable ending. This one didn’t. It ended with a smile on our faces. Thanks Gerry and
Andew!!
