Ideas to use with these Popcorn Words

These second grade and third grade words from the Dolch list can be used as popcorn words
in an early childhood classroom. Choose the order in introducing the words that works best
for your classroom Copy the word cards on cardstock paper. Make a set for each student.
Have one envelope or baggie that you use to keep each child’s set. Have a second envelope
or baggie to put each student’s new words each week to practice at home.

Center/Station use – Have students partner and practice the popcorn words introduced each
year. Print these words on cardstock and laminate them for repeated use in centers/stations.
The Popcorn cards are not needed for this center/station use.

Play a Popcorn game with either as either a pair/partner activity, small group activity or an
entire class activity where the class is divided into two groups. Print the words on
cardstock paper. For an entire class game, divide the class into two groups. Have each
group identify a word at a time. If they are correct, the word goes into their popcorn stack
for a point. If not, the card is put into a discard pile to be used in future play with each group.
If a student draws a Popcorn card, they are able to identify a card from the other group’s
stack for an additional point for their team. Play until one team has correctly identified 50
words (or another point value if using less words.) Follow the same procedures for either a
pair/partner activity or a small group activity. Share these same procedures with parents to
play the game at home.

Write Around the Room Activity – Copy the words on cardstock paper. Display around
the room. Copy one of the next pages in the packet to give to the students depending on how
many words you wish for the students to write. Have them go around the room and find the
displayed words. Have them write the words that they know. Once they have completed
their list, they can read the list to a partner, to you or to a volunteer.

Sentence Writing Activity – Write a sentence using Dolch words included with the
assignment. This gives the students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the
meaning of the Popcorn ord.
