Dear Teacher Associate,

My name is Amanda Yost and I would first like to say thank you for allowing me
to join your grade X class and I look forward to meeting you all. I am very eager to
further my knowledge and experience what a teacher accomplishes on a daily, as well as
long-term, basis. Along with this, I am interested in learning what the children have to
teach me, whether that be through observation or direct engagement. Overall, I hope this
experience deepens my understanding of the profession as I am passionate about helping
people through teaching.
I grew up in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Lethbridge right after graduating
high school in 2014. I am currently working towards a combined degree of General
Science and Mathematics Education. I feel lucky to be able to get a degree with my
particular streams being mathematics, psychology, and geography, as I find them all to be
interesting areas of study. Although these subjects are more analytically and logically
driven, I also consider myself to be very creative. I expressed this creativity through
dance lessons and classes like wood shop in high school, as well as the course Art NOW
through the university.
I have taken a particular interest in Mathematics Education because of various
experiences with my teachers of the subject, as well as by helping others who struggled
with it. During my secondary education, I found that math teachers who taught with
patience, support, and clarity, were often more successful at teaching the material than
those who were impatient and ambiguous in their approach. These different experiences
lead me to use a more positive and concise method when helping others with their math
struggles. Using these strategies led to feelings of success and fulfillment for both myself
and the person I helped; hence, my desire to pursue a profession in teaching was sparked.
Ultimately, a major aspiration of mine is to have a positive impact on students through
the use of kindness and encouragement.
Finally, I would also like to add that I am a hard worker that likes to organize,
clean, and plan, so feel free to take advantage of this. On that note, I would like to thank
you again for this opportunity, and I am excited to meet you and the class very soon!
