Tutorial 7 MCL111

1. Determine the lengths of the links of a four bar linkage to generate y  log10 x in the interval
1  x  10 . The length of the smallest link is 5 cm. use three accuracy points with Chebyshev’s
spacing.
2. The kinematic scheme of a level-luffing crane, used for handling cargo in ports is shown in figure
1a. For moving cargo approximately in a horizontal direction, it is desired that the coupler point C
should pass through three prescribed locations C1 , C2 and C3 . Determine the required link
lengths O2 A and AB . In a real-life design, some trials regarding the assumed locations O2O4 and
B , and the height h are necessary to arrive at a good design shown in figure 1b where A lies
near the midpoint BC .

3. Design of a 4 bar function generator to obtain the following pairs of coordinated input-output
movements: (212  26 ,412  54 ) and ( 213  52 ,  413  80 ) . Assume the frame length
O2O4  5.1cm, O2 A1  6.4cm, O2O4 A1  40 (CW ) (i.e.  21  40 . Use both methods of
inversion and relative poles. As usual, a positive angle means CCW rotation. Also observe the
directions of rotation of links 2 and 4 at the three accuracy points.
4. Figure 2a shows the sketch of a tipper-dumper truck. The locations of the fixed pivots O2 and O4
are chosen conveniently on the body of the truck as shown in figure 2b. given the transport (I),
dumping (III), and an intermediate configuration of the bin, locate A and B on the body of the
bin.
