Assignment I

1. The mechanism of a wrapping machine has the following dimensions:


O1A = 100mm, AC = 700mm, BC = 200mm, O3C = 200mm, O2E = 400mm, O2D = 200mm and BD = 150mm.
The crank O1A rotates at a uniform speed of 100rad/s. Find the velocity of the point E of the bell crank lever by
instantaneous centre method.

2. An engine mechanism is shown. The crank CB = 100mm and the connecting rod BA = 300mm with centre of gravity
G, 100mm from B. In the position shown, The crankshaft
has a speed of 75rad/sec and an angular acceleration of 1200rad/s2.
Find a) velocity of G and angular velocity of AB and
b) acceleration of G and angular acceleration of AB

3.Sketch and describe the working of two different types of Quick return mechanisms. Give examples of their
applications. Derive an expression for the ratio of time taken in forward and return stroke for one of these
mechanisms
4. What is pantograph? Show that it generates a path similar to the path traced by a point on the mechanism
5. Explain about the scott russel’s mechanism

1. PQRS is a four bar chain with link PS fixed. The lengths of the links are PQ=62.5mm, QR=175mm, RS=112.5mm
and PS= 200mm. The crank PQ rotates at 10rad/s clockwise . Draw the velocity and acceleration diagram when angle
QPS=60o and Q and R lie on the same side of PS. Find the angular velocity and angular acceleration of links QR and RS
2. What are inversions of four bar chain mechanisms? Where are they used? Discuss the functioning of any
one of them ?
3. Describe the working of a Hooke’s joint with a neat sketch. Also prove that
the ratio of angular velocity of the drven shaft to that of the driving shaft with a
Hooke’s joint, where θ is the angle turned by the driving shaft at any instant and α is
the angle of inclination of driven shaft with driving shaft.
4. The figure shows a whitworth quick return motion mechanism. The
various dimensions in the mechanism as follows :
OQ= 100mm, OA = 200mm,QC = 150mm, and
CD = 500mm.
The crank OA makes an angle of 60o with the vertical and
rotates at 120rpm in the clockwise direction. Locate all the
instantaneous centres and find the velocity of ram D

4. The angular velocity of the crank OA is 600rpm. Determine the linear velocity of the link BD, when the
crank is inclined at an angle of 75o to the vertical. The dimensions of various links are :
OA = 28mm, AB = 44mm, BC = 49mm, and BD= 46mm. The centre distance between the centres of rotation O
and C is 65mm. The path of travel of the slider is 11mm below the fixed point C. The slider moves along a horizontal
path and OC is vertical.

5. Find out the acceleration of the slider D and the angular acceleration of the link CD for the engine
mechanism shown. The crank OA rotates uniformly at 180rpm in clockwise direction. The various lengths are :
OA= 150mm, AB = 450mm, PB = 240mm, BC = 210mm, CD = 660mm

examples of their applications. Derive an expression for the ratio of time taken in forward and return stroke for one
of these mechanisms
2. The dimensions of the various links of a pneumatic river, as shown are as
follows:
OA = 175mm, AB = 180mm, AD = 500mm, and BC = 325mm. Find the velocity ratio between C and ram D when
OB is vertical. What will be the efficiency of the machine if a load of 2.5N on the
piston C causes a thrust of 4KN at the ram D ?

3. A pump is driven from an engine crank shaft by the mechanism as shown.


The pump piston shown at F is 250mm in diameter and the crank speed is
100rpm.
The dimensions of various links are as

follows:
OA=150mm, AB=600mm,BC=350mm,CD=150mm,DE=500mm.
Determine for the position shown:
a) The velocity of the cross-head
b) The rubbing velocity of the pins A and B which are 50mm diameter
c) The torque required at the crank shaft to overcome a pressure of 0.35N/mm2 and
d) The acceleration of the cross head E
4. Explain briefly about gross hoper mechanism

2. In a mechanism as shown, The various dimensions are : OC = 125mm, CP = 500mm, PA = 125mm, AQ = 250mm
and QE= 125mm.

The slider P translates along an axis which is 25mm vertically below point O. The crank OC rotates uniformly at 12rpm in
the anticlockwise direction. The bell crank lever AQE rocks about fixed centre Q. Draw the velocity diagram and calculate
the absolute velocity of point E of the lever

1. A mechanism of a crank and slotted lever quick return motion is shown.


If the crank rotates counter clockwise at 120rpm. Determine for the
configuration shown, the velocity and acceleration of the ram D. Also determine the angular
acceleration of the slotted lever.

<O2BC = 90o, BC = 16mm, CD = 40mm, D lies vertically below O1 .
