Emerging Technologies

This first one is not so much an emerging Technology but more of an initiative. Certain cities
are providing free tablets/Internet access. According to
www.americancitycounty.com/2018/09/10/three-ideas-to-close-the-digital-divide-in-your-city/
, the city of Baltimore has provided free tablets/Internet access through residents that enrolled
in a self-sufficiency program and the tablets are provided by T-Mobile and the housing
authority covers the cover of the data plans for two years. This makes a big difference to
families who could not get Internet access for whatever reason. The ones who received tablets
said they could do more on the tablet than they could on a smartphone such as: apply to jobs,
do homework, start businesses or even use to go to college.
Another emerging technology is giving rural residents access to the Internet. According to the
same article as above, not too many rural residents use the Internet due to the Internet not
being relevant in their lives. West Hills College in California invested in teaching students how
to apply technology to improve agricultural production. This effort will make the Internet more
relevant in the digital age and provide farmers with everything they need right at their
fingertips.
