Many historians wrote what is happened in the history and other people based on it. We
need to choose wisely in using sources because some of it is not reliable. There are two
classification of history which is primary sources and secondary sources. Primary sources are
those sources produced at the same as the event, period, or subject being studied. Some example
of primary sources are archives and manuscript material, photographs, audio recordings, video
recordings, films, journals, letters and diaries, speeches, scrapbooks, published books,
newspapers and magazine clippings published at the time, government publications, oral
histories, records of organizations, autobiographies and memoirs, printed ephemera. While
secondary sources are produced by an author who used primary sources to produce the material.
In other words, secondary sources are historical sources, which studied a certain historical
subject. “For us, primary sources are more reliable than secondary sources because it is the
actual event that has been recorded by the actual person who is present in the event, it is based on
their own experience and secondary sources use primary sources as a guide.”

The first name of the Philippines was given by Chinese called “Ma-I” and it is
uncivilized country while the area of Philippines before is still the same until now. Early Pilipino
is clean and use salt for cleaning their teeth. The visitor needs to wash their foot before entering
the house. They wear tattoos as beautification on their body and as a war record. If they see other
people whom they know, they will remove there “putong” and place it to their chest and then
bow. They have strong family life that is led by “love”. The children were trained to be loyal to
the ancestral gods, to respect elders, to love their parents and to obey the datu or barangay laws.
When they walk as a family the men is always at the back because they are gentlemen and want
to protect his family. “We conclude that early Filipinos are more responsible in their attitude than
today and respect other people. And we are amazed on male person because they are gentlemen
unlike today. For example, before male are in the back of the family to protect their family but
today they will walk past through women and sometimes lead to conflict, some person doesn’t
care if they see other people in difficulty and didn’t help them . Before, people are contented on
what they have and use it in intelligent way but now some people want to get what they want. In
terms of tattoos, they are the same because today’s generation use tattoos as a design on their
body but the only difference is the war record, they didn’t use tattoos as a sign of victory”.
They locate their house at the top of the tree to protect their selves by wild animal, it have
stair that they can lift in night called “bahay kubo”. It is not a simple bahay kubo that we think
are small, it is really big and have extension that are connected to their kitchen where they can
wash their dishes or store their pots, pans, and cooking utensils called “batalan”. Early Filipinos,
they were not naked savages like the Old Stone Age people in Europe and America, they actually
wear clothes. In male, they have long hair and use putong or head cap. They wore a collarless,
short sleeved jacket called kangan, they wear gold jewelry like earrings and bracelet called
kolumbigas. They are bare foot same as the female person. Female people have long hair but in
ponytail, they wear barong at saya and have gold teeth. “It gives us the idea of what is Filipino
before, because all we know that they are naked and have their own house and not in the cave.
The value of gold before is not really high unlike today that we pay so much money just to buy a
little gold that we can use. Today’s generation is very modern that they fashion dress especially
in women”.

The early Filipinos before they have a good foundation to their family, they have a simple
life, a strong life. The early Filipinos are very respectful, they are very polite and they are very
religious and until now we adopt it. Before the only have a power to choose the name of their
children is the mother. Because the father is the only have to provide the needs of their family.
And when the early Filipino they have a different traditions that they need every time we met
other people they always do is to bow. And until now we adopt their being religious person and
as they love to their family, and we adopt also their being respectful to the older their being
generous and for their being kind to other.

Based on what we have learned about the earliest Filipino Family. times are changing
because sometimes we forgot the different traditions that we have sometimes we forgot it, like
for being gentleman for the boys, for being generous and kind to other and of course for being
polite and respectful to the older. as a student i encourage my fellow youth , fellow student that
they need to learned and love the different believe or tradition that we have.

The religion of the earliest Filipino before is called pagans or paganism this is the
worship of the different anitos. And they call their God as Bathala. The belief system of
Filipinos consisted of a pantheon of gods, spirits, creatures, and men that guarded the streams,
fields, trees, mountains, forests, and houses. Bathala, who created earth and man, was superior to
these other gods and spirits. Regular sacrifices and prayers were offered to placate these deities
and spirits. Wood and metal images represented ancestral spirits, and no distinction was made
between the spirits and their physical symbol. Reward or punishment after death was dependent
upon behavior in this life. There are different perspectives when it’s come to their religion but
them a one way to express to other people to learn about the word of God.

Based on what we have learned about the religion of the earliest Filipino I’ve realized so
many things like we need to appreciate the different perspective of the early Filipinos. As a
student being religious person help us to be more and teach us to be a good person. And we all
know the Earliest Filipino, Actually until they have indeed a deep faith in our God, to be a good
son or daughter in Lord Jesus Christ. Because we all know all Filipino’s as a of deep and great
faith Throughout the year they manifest this kind of faith through their celebration of Advent,
Lent, Easter, various “fiestas” honoring patron Saints and other significant events in the Church.
And most notable and significant in this connection is that they show this extraordinary faith at
the very onset of the year in January by commemorating two important events in the life of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God: the feast of the Santo Nino honoring the baby
Jesus and the feast of the Black Nazarene depicting the suffering Christ carrying the cross. As we
celebrate the different perspective we showcase the different love in our Lord Jesus Christ.
That’s why it is important to know and we need to importance it. Because this our own tradition
this is our own believe.

Long time ago, early Filipino Ancestors valued education very much. They have a school
also and they called it Bothoan. In their Alphabet they called it Alibata while their Pen they
called it means Sipol. Early Filipino ancestors valued education very much. Filipino men and
women know how to read and write using their own native alphabet called alibata. The alibata
was composed of 17 symbols representing the letters of the alphabet. Among these seventeen
symbols were three vowels and fourteen consonants. The education of pre-Spanish time in the
Philippines was informal and unstructured. The fathers taught their sons how to look for food
and other means of livelihood. The mothers taught their girls to do the household chores. This
education basically prepared their children to become good husband and wives.
Based on what we have learned about the early Filipinos they believe that education is
the key to have a good future. Even in a simple way that’s why we need to do our best to study
hard and make our parents proud for us. These lessons teach us to be much more matured when
it comes in our beliefs because some of the Filipinos had already forgotten the history. They
forget the simple life that we had before.

During the Pre-colonial of early Filipinos The Maharlika or the nobles is very important
for them because the Maharlika were obligated to provide and prepare weapons at their own
expense and answer the summons of the Datu, wherever and whenever that might be, in
exchange for a share in the war spoils

The Maharlika may also occasionally be obligated to work on the lands of the Datu and
assist in projects and other events in the community. The nobles in their generation were a
trusted people for them.

During the pre-colonial of early Filipinos the Timawas or a Freeman it’s constituted the
middle class in their barangays they were free born, persons and emancipated slaves by and large
the free man formed the majority among the inhabitants of there every barangay.

And they are allowed to live in other barangay’s and them a rower boat before and they
are protected by the datu.

Long time ago, Early Filipinos the Alipin or Slave it’s belonged to the Lowest social
class they have a different cause of slavery it is birth, Penalty for a crime committed , Failure to
pay debts, captivity in war, Purchase. And also they have a kind of slave it is rather Aliping
Namumuhay is higher position and lived in their own houses, their owned property. While the
aliping saguiguilid is lower than in rank compares to aliping namamahay.

A noble could become a slave in ancient Philippines a freeman could rise to the nobility
and a slave could become a freeman. Based on what we learned on the early Filipinos even, even
though you are not the same as living you must be thankful because you are living this world you
should thanks for that. I’ve realized that I do not need to compare myself to anyone because I
have my own life. In early Filipinos even they in the lower rank on their livings they treat as a
part of their community and they have a freedom.
As what I understand the topic about the Causes of slavery for: By birth, Penalty for a
crime committed, failure to pay debts, Captivity in war and Purchases. Early Filipinos are very
patient. It is by nature that even if someone maltreated them, they are still humble for those
powerful people or to their “Masters”. It is lifetime of exploitation and treated as a property by
their so called ‘masters’. They work without pay, working in the fields of their master’s home.

Slavery by birth is very unfair to the part of the Filipinos who was given birth by their
poor parents, they never attend school, because of lack of birth certificate for people of slave,
they don’t have freedom to choose what they want to become in their lives. As they have no
choice that they must accept the fact that they was born slave and be also like that till death.

Penalty for crime committed it is very inhuman and injustice, they don’t have freedom to
defend their selves and to speak out their rights.

Failure to pay debts, early Filipinos they don’t have choice whether they like it or not
they have to rendered lifetime services to their masters.

Captivity in a war, being captivated in wars is very unfair but they don’t have an option
but to serve their masters, because it’s better to stay alive than to be killed.

Purchases, this part of slavery, the money is powerful in early Filipinos. They can buy
what they want, and whoever they want, even if they will trample the dignity of the poor people.

If I compare the life of Filipinos before and now is very different, before I really don’t
like the attitudes that they shows to their fellowmen, especially for those poor or slaves people.
They treated like an animal they don’t respect the rights of every people, even though if they
committed mistakes they still have a chance to defend and to protect their selves and to choose
the right pathway of their lives. For now, poor Filipino has a freedom to choose what they want;
all people have a chance to progress or to change their lives. Even the slaves, they can change
their lives and they can give a better life to their family through diligence and determination.
The marriage of an early Filipinos is very formal and decent. It takes too long and many
process before they get married. The marriage is a must that the man must offer dowry to the
parents of the woman he wants to marry. It is indeed great as it shows the most respectful way of
expressing real intentions towards the parents. The man before is very “maginoo”, very
respectful, and loving, they do everything just to impress the women they love. But for now is
very different, it’s very easy for them to get married as modern technology took over. They don’t
need to give dowry to the parent of the woman, and also the attitude is very different, some men
is rude and discourteous.

I like the tradition of marriage in early Filipinos, because they gave effort, time,
perseverance, have good manners and most of all the respect that they gave to the parents.

Let’s talk about the ground for divorce in the Pre-Spanish era. These are the adultery on
the part of the wife, desertion on the part of the husband, loss of affection, cruelty, insanity and
childlessness. Here in the Philippines, in the present times, divorce is not allowed. We believe
that marriage is a sacred ordinance and is ordained by God. Earl Filipinos are so active in
exercising their rights. They don’t value marriage so much because of the presence of divorce.
They are totally free to cut their relation with whom they promised to be with the rest of their
lives. If that’s the case, then it is possible that early Filipinos don’t have just one husband and
wife in their entire existence.

The kind of government in the ancient times was a better one. The datu, who is the ruler
of the barangay exercised great powers. He was the chief executive, legislator, and judge of the
barangay; and in time of war he was the commander of the barangay warriors. There are lots of
obligation and responsibility that a datu must be fulfilled. I’m pretty sure that those persons who
are the datus or rulers are very devoted and dedicated to their work and functions with the best
that they can. It is said that their position is inherited or in case a datu died without any heir or
heiress, all freemen and maharlikas met together and elected a new datu. This only proves that
datu comes from a royal family and must be the strongest, richest, and wisest man in the
barangay. The barangay’s progression relies upon the datu who rules the place. If they have o
many responsibilities and obligations, then it is really hard to be in their position. They dedicate
all of their timeand efforts from the day they are being chosen up to the day of their burial. Their
where they practice this kind of government is really admirable. They work not for themselves
but for the sake of their people. They work not because of money and power but they are doing
those responsibilities and obligations because of their love to their subordinates. In addition,
democracy is being practiced also in the ancient times wherein the declaration of war with an
enemy barangay, the marriage of the barangay lakan(prince) or lakambini (princess0, and the
negotiation of a political alliance with another barangay needs approval and consultation of
barangay elders who took part in judicial trials of persons accused of certain crimes. It is indeed
the right way of ruling or governing. The decision- making which is the hardest part that a datu
does needs help from the barangay elders becausethey are the one who experienced so many
things on their walk through life. They saw a lot of things, bad or good results from the former
datus that is why they could give best advice and they are the most dependable person on that
time. There is no such replacement for cooperation and consultation from the experts.

It is farming which is the main industry of ancient Filipinos. The two methods; the
kaingin and the regular means of tillage using wooden plows and harrows drawn by carabaos.
There is such a hard time on their days as part of their industry because technologies such as
machines aren’t present. They only depend on their body strength and endurance as they exercise
the manual or traditional method of planting. Other industries which are fishing, mining,
lumbering, weaving, metal work, making of tools and weapons, manufacture of wines, raising
of poultry and stock, tanning and shipbuilding only proves that ancient Filipinos are
knowledgeable enough on how to earn a living and is capable of discovering so many things by
the help of mother nature.

Early Filipinos believe in life after death so they take good care in burying their dead.
The dead body was embalmed like in the ancient Egypt, and was buried near their home, in a
cave or headlands overlooking the sea. Therefore we realized that we got our custom during
burial of our dead love ones from our ancestors. Today, when someone is died we take good care
of their dead body and send them in a cemetery for them to rest in peace because as Christians
we believe in everlasting life that’s why we made our best here just for them to have a happy life
in heaven.

During the period of mourning, no colored clothes but only white clothes were worn by
grieving people. All wars and quarrels were suspended. And singing is prohibited. But as we
observed Filipinos’ today can’t avoid to argue during burial, we’re very disappoint for what
people do nowadays because they can’t respect the dead but still it’s good to know that we still
wear any white shirts or blouse during the mourning meaning we accept with all our hearts that
someone is need to bring back to God

So base on what we have learned, we’re amazed that we, Filipinos still practicing the
custom of the early Filipinos. And it’s a pleasure for us that we may able to share it to the next
generation. At the same time, it makes us dejected because others make the burial of someone as
their reunion.

Antonio Pigafetta was a key player of one of the most amazing world exploration trips.
He was born in Vicenza in 1492, and he was an Italian seafarer and geographer. He is one of
Magellan’s Crew who records and make document to the whole voyage of Magellan. If we had a
chance to thanks Pigafetta we will surely thank him because without him Philippines is a total
darkness and we will not able to know what happened to the Philippines. Although there are
many researchers and sources can be use a basis but for us, it’s much better if we rely on the
person who already there in the event.

Many history books or others knew that Magellan discovered Philippines but as we
discuss about it, Magellan rediscovered Philippines. It was already existed before Magellan
coming to the Philippines because there is already an early Filipinos

Magellan is a Portuguese born in 1480 belonged from a noble family. In 1505, when he
was 23 years old, he joined the Portuguese expedition. He fought fearless in many battles. That’s
why we conclude that’s makes Magellan is very proud to himself and too boastful because he
beat all the battles he had.” In 1513, he accompanied by Enrique, his Malay slave, whom he had
acquired in Malacca. After that he took part in the Portuguese campaign against the moors of
Africa. In this campaign, he was hit by an enemy in the left knee causing him to limp for the rest
of his lives. Through this we realized and learned that you will not always win the fight
sometimes you have to admit and accept that you are not always on the top. But we must put in
our mind that there’s still a hope to get up and make another way to reach our goal like
Magellan, do not change the goal, make another way to attain what you want to achieve.

After that, Magellan proposed another plan to his king, King Manuel. He as him to
increase his pension unfortunately the king rejected him and also ignored his proposed plan to
blaze a westward route to the Spice Islands (Moluccas) because Magellan accused of pocketing
of sales of the livestock. We felt hurt for Magellan, because after those successful battles he had
the king did not support him just because of one false accusation. For us, it is unfair because with
that accusation and without enough evidence you can’t get any support for those you expect will
give it to you.

Magellan goes to Spain and renounced his Portuguese citizenship. In Spain, he met Diego
Barbosa, an old friend of his father, Duarte Barbosa, Diego’s son and he met Beatriz his
beautiful daughter who became Magellan’s wife. Through Diego’s and other influential people
helped Magellan to appear in the royal court and met the King of Spain, King Charles I. With
that, Magellan was able to present his plan and the King accepted it. He gave Magellan 5 ships
namely Trinidad, Santiago, San Antonio, Victoria and Concepcion; he was also given 200 men.
Most of his companions are Spaniards but others were foreign mariners. Accompanying
Magellan were his Malay Slave, Enrique act as an interpreter, Padre Pedro Valderrama who
officiated the mass in the Philippines, his brother-in-law Duarte Barbosa, and Antonio Pigafetta,
Venetian knight and chronicler of the expedition. This should be an open door to Magellan
because after many trials and rejections he had, he got a new opportunity to prove his capability.
We’re happy that even though Magellan is boastful he has an attitude of perseverance.

Along their voyage, they faced many circumstances and fortunately they are able to
surpass it and successfully attain their mission. There is a time their ships with all their
provisions leave them and return to Spain so severe hungry they experienced there and others
died because of starvation. There is also a time that Santiago destroyed because of squall in the
Pacific Ocean. We can’t imagine how they are able to survive those hardships during the total
darkness. It’s really admirable how perseverance they are. I think we got it from them that no
matter how difficult the life is we still manage and conquers those trials.

In March 6, 1521, Magellan reached Guam and met the natives called Chamorres. They
supplied his famished men with fresh water and provisions. At first, Magellan called that Island
as Island of Sails because there are numerous sailboats along the coast, but later on, he called it
the Ladrones Island which means “magnanakaw” in Spanish because Chamorres stole the boat
from Magellan’s flagship. We felt so disappointed to this part because as we have experienced
today we sometimes betray by our close friends or those we expect to be a true friend. We
thought they’re all faithful and loyal to us but we do not know that they have only a bad intention
to us that’s why they want being close to us.

From Guam Magellan came to rediscover the Philippines. Saluans welcomed them
wholeheartedly and give them gifts. With this we realized why Filipinos of today are hospitable
because our ancestors are sociable, family oriented. It’s good to know that until today we used to
do what the early Filipinos’ custom, we still prepare something for our visitors.

Magellan also met the Kings of the different kingdom and of course he is welcomed by
the Kings and celebrated his coming to the Philippines. They made sanduguan or blood compact
which means they accepted the friendship. Nowadays, the sign of friendship to us is pinky
promise and we think that is much better than before because if we apply it today it is harsher if
will look at it. They exchange gifts too.

Spaniards also open our minds and spread the Christians here in the Philippines. Even
though there are many religions today still Christians were lot more than them.
