Introduction

The exhibition I visited recently is the National Art Gallery Kuala Lumpur (Balai Seni Lukis).
The National Art Gallery is located along Jalan Temerloh. The gallery has a unique architecture
which is inspired by the traditional Malay architecture and incorporated with contemporary touch
to it makes the gallery one of the most modern art venues in Malaysia. The visitation details as
below:
Title: Visitation to National Art Gallery Kuala Lumpur
Date: 4 March 2017, Saturday
Time: 11.00am – 1.00pm
Organizer: UTAR Architecture Society
The objective of the visitation is to prepare a case study for the next coming project in
architecture design class. The aim is to observe the circulation and the way of present different
kind of arts such as painting, sculpture and so on. I took this opportunity to look into the detail of
different art and how the artist get inspired and their design approach as well. The scope including
their title of art, description and product.
Sculpture of Orang Asli

The intention of the sculpture is to promote orang asli in Malaysia to tourists and others. This is
because their existence are rarely notice by outsider even Malaysian are not familiar with them.
The artist used their culture costume and recycled materials from their place to form the sculpture
to present the first impression to the visitors. The recycled materials included farming and kitchen
utilities represents their daily routine and lifestyle as orang asli involved in agriculture to earn their
daily expenses while women in charge of meals preparation for the family. Besides that, I noticed
the artist present his idea with 2 adults and 2 children as a family and shows the love in a family
even though they are not live in city or luxury lifestyle but they appreciate their current condition
and works for a better future. Furthermore, the details of the sculpture is just amazing and creative
as the artist looked into them carefully in every single detail. For example, the base to represent
the legs, the bicycle’s chain wheels to represent their head and so on. Their culture costume is
the main attraction to show their beauty of culture to the others.
Photography of Urban Village, Kampong Baru vs KL City

The aerial perspective taken by the photographer is about the Kampong Baru located beside the
city of Kuala Lumpur. The aerial perspective is to emphasize the contrast between village and
city, Kampong Baru vs KL city. The photographer present them in monotone to keep the purity of
village and its people. The people included different stages of life: baby, teenagers, adults and
elders. They born in village and live in village quite a long time and not polluted by the bad
influence in the city. They help and guide each other for a better life. But in another way, monotone
shows the dull and bored life in the village, they are not exposed to the technology world and
isolated to the outside. It shows the negative and positive thinking from the same piece of art. The
artist create different thinking and let the visitors to decide their preference.
Painting of Tiger with chain in front

The main character of the painting is a tiger with white lines on red background. The design
concept is talking about animal care and how people treat the animal nowadays. Animal abuse
cases are becoming viral throughout the world and people start to mind about it. The artist used
red colour background to represent the blood lost by the animal due to human greedy and cruelty.
The artist used tiger to emphasize the extinction of the species and human should take action to
prevent it happens. The artist used combination of art and reality item to lead people to his
message. The chain is put in front but not on the neck which mean people should not leave them
free because every living things should have their freedom and not display items to fulfill human
desire.
Sculpture of Face(s)

The artist used a human head with multiple faces to represent the inner part of human. Wooden
sculpture as the main material to match the solid feel of people brain. The human brain the most
complex and complicated element in human, even current professionals failed to fully interpret it.
People have multi senses and feeling where these control a people mind. Different angles of
thinking will produce different results. So it is important how the people think and it will formed
different characteristics of people. Hidden potential is available so don’t afraid to speak out
because it may change the results in different aspect. Listen to your inner feeling and be
determine on what you believe and things may be different later on.
Conclusion

Throughout the art visitation in National Art Gallery Kuala Lumpur, I have learned the
beauty of every pieces of art no matter in sculpture form, paintings or drawings as long as the
art able to transfer messages to the others. Different approach or different art provide different
kind of feelings to the visitors. This unit taught us the appreciation towards art. This is the first
time I try to appreciate an art, it also trained my patience and observation on every detail in it.

Furthermore, I am quite disappointing to the National Art Gallery. This is because the
gallery not really up to National standard. The gallery do not undergoes proper maintenance
and results a lot of failures while appreciating the art. Some of lightings are directly shot on the
arts and caused reflective of light and have difficulty in observing the details. I hope the related
department will look seriously into the problem and fix them as soon as possible as it reflects
the image of Malaysia.
