1. The flow depth in a long trapezoidal channel (bottom width = 8 m, side slopes 1:1) for a flow of 28
m3/s is 3 m. The channel bottom slope is 0.0001. Determine the flow depth if the rate of discharge is
doubled.
2. Determine the discharge passing through the cross section of the compound channel shown below.
The manning roughness coefficients are n1 =0.02, n2 =0.03 and n3 = 0.04. The channel bed slope for
the whole channel is So=0.008. Note that the main channel is a composite channel too with different
Manning’s coefficients as shown in the figure. Use and equivalent value of n as (Read the reference
book M. Hanif Chaudhry - Equivalent Manning constant page 106):

3. A rectangular channel with a width of 4 m has a depth of 2.5 m at flow rate12 m 3/s. Draw a specific
energy diagram for the given flow condition and determine (i) whether the flow is critical, subcritical
or supercritical (ii) the critical depth and the alternate depth for the given depth (ii) the alternate
depths for a specific energy of 4.0m. (In each case show your results both from the graph and by
calculation with appropriate equations)

4. A sewer pipe, for which n=0.014, is laid on a slope of 0.00018 and is to carry 2.76 m3/s when the
pipe flows at 80% of full depth. Determine the required diameter of pipe.
