Genre Research

Pop music-
A term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular”. The genre popular music
originated in its modern form in the 1950s, originating from rock and roll. The term "pop
song" is first recorded as being used in 1926. Some of the most well-known names in history
such as; The Beatles, Michael Jackson, The rolling Stones, ABBA etc
The most significant feature of the pop music industry of the late 18th and early 19th
centuries was the extent of its focus on the product form of sheet music. Pop music is
generally described as very commercial friendly, marketable and memorable, with either
vocals, lyrics, instruments, or a combination of all three creating catchy choruses or verses.

Music video-
 Usually follow storylines
 Different length shots
 Tracking shots used often
 Some include dance routines#
Women dress to portray themselves as beautiful with use of costume and makeup.
Men dress masculine, looking sweaty portraying in the storyline going after the girl.
Young and mid adult target audience.

Rock music-
The early '60s, Berry’s followers, most notably the Rolling Stones, expanded rock’s scope by
transitioning from singles artists into musicians capable of producing cohesive albums of
songs. Embracing sex and youthful rebellion in their music, the Stones courted controversy
but also elevated rock to new cultural heights. Artists- Queen, The Beatles, pink

Older audience attracted

Grime/rap-
Grime is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in London in the early 2000s. It
developed out of earlier UK electronic music styles, including UK garage and jungle, and
draws influence from dancehall, ragga, and hip hop. Artists- Dr dre, 50 Cent, Dizzee Rascal.
Music video-
 Tracking.
 Low high angles used for movement
 Direct address to camera (singing to camera)
 Lighting used in certain locations (strip lights)
Recent grime music targeted at younger audience, whereas old rap/grime targeted at the
older audience such as dr dre.

Indie-
Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United States and United Kingdom
in the 1970s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became
associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with
alternative rock. Artists- Coldplay, The 1975, oasis, The Wombats.
 A lot of tracking
 Dark lighting
 Mixture of shots and angles low angels following artists
Target audience young and old, some independent artists are for younger audiences and
some are for older audiences.
