PRE-START VERIFICATIONS
The pre-start verification allows you to identify if any components present anomalies. The
identification and resolution of these anomalies will allow you to manufacture a quality
product for many years to come. Here are the important points to verify:
Note: An asterisk (*) at the end of a title means the information concerns both machining
stations.
4- Retighten bolts (A) and lock nut (B) when proper tension is obtained.
C B
3- Adjust belt tension using adjustment nuts (B). Make sure belt stays aligned with
pulleys.
1- Apply a precision square (A) against the guide knife (B) located in the machining
stations.
2- Verify if the lug is at exactly 90 degrees in relation with the guide knife.
Note: repeat these two steps for each lug. Use the AUTO-O-JOG control box to position
lug in front of the square.
• Make sure there is no wood piece in the SAI or in the finger jointer. A wood
piece hitting a shaper or a saw while it is not running could damage them.
• Don’t try to adjust if some lugs are not at 90 degrees. Only a qualified person
must perform lug squaring. At this time, call Doucet Machineries inc.
3- Retighten bolts (A) and lock nuts (B) when proper tension is obtained.
B
A
2- Referring to the gauges, adjust to the pressures shown on the illustration below. These
pressures are approximates.
3- Push the regulator knobs downward when proper pressures are obtained.
• Excessive pressure in the press could cause premature wear of the press
components.
• Excessive pressure in the press increases load on the main chain, lugs and the
main drive. This could result as a general wear and risk of running out of
adjustment.
2- Referring to the gauges, adjust to the pressures shown on the illustration below. These
pressures are approximates.
3- Push the regulator knobs downward when proper pressures are obtained.

OPERATION PARAMETERS
4
In this chapter, we will see the operation parameters that you will have to adjust
according to the wood thickness and the joint depth. Each time you change one of these
variables, you will have to adjust one or many operation parameters.
Note: An asterisk (*) at the end of a title means the information concerns both machining
stations.
Press Height *
It is very important to adjust press height in order to maintain the wood pieces while
they are machined.
3- Using crank (B), lower press until it slightly touches the wood piece.
4- Remove the wood piece and lower press 1/16” to 1/32” (1.6 mm to 0.8 mm) more
• If the wheels are too low, the wood piece surface could be mark by them.
• If the wheels are not enough low the wood pieces could not be move sideward and
they could not pass through the press of the FAO. This could result as a difficult
transfer of the wood pieces toward the tunnel.
Shaper depth*
It is very important to adjust shaper depth in order to machine adequate finger joint.
5- Using crank (C), screw or unscrew to adjust shaper at 0.020” (0.5mm) from the lugs.
Make sure cutter does not touch chain lugs.
6- Retighten handle (A) and lock nuts (B) when proper depth is obtained.
Shaper Height *
It is very important to adjust shaper height in order to machine adequate finger joint. Use
the try and error method to perform this adjustment.
4- Retighten handle (A) and move crank (B) when proper height is obtained.
6- Make a test.
3- Using the crank (B), screw or unscrew bolt (C) to adjust trim and scoring saw depth.
4- Retighten handles (A) and remove crank (B) when proper adjustment is obtained.
6- Make a test.
7- If the depth of the trim and scoring saw is not satisfying, repeat steps 1 to 6.
C A
3- Using the crank (B), screw or unscrew to adjust scoring and trim saw height.
4- Retighten handles (A) and remove crank (B) when proper height is obtained.
6- Make a test.
2- With the cylinder (B) in the open position, slide the support until the diagonal transfer is
positioned 1/2" (12.7mm) plus joint depth from the lugs.
A
B
2- Position the exit fence (B) as close as possible the diagonal transfer but without
touching it. The exit fence must be parallel to the main chain lugs.
B
A
The fence at the exit of the diagonal transfer should be adjusted in reference with the exit
fence.
2- Move entrance of the fence (B) slightly behind the exit fence (C) and move the exit of
the fence (B) 3/16" (4.8mm) plus joint depth from the lugs.
B C
Flow control
• It is really important that the main chain speed does not exceed 80f/min
(24.4m/min).

TROUBLE SHOOTING
WARNING!
To avoid injury and physical damage, disconnect power from finger jointer and
associated units before undertaking any repairs.
Problems Solutions
• Check if the AUTO-O-JOG control box is on
• The jointing system does not position AUTO.
start. • Check fuses and breakers.
• Check if air supply is cut off.
• Power unit does not start • Check if emergency button is depressed.
The finger jointer stops if it runs for about an hour with a low oil level. When this
occurs, simply open the tilting door at the exit of the finger jointer and fill the oil tank with
clean oil.
The finger jointer stops if the speed of the main chain is too fast (higher than 112
f/min or 24.4 m/min), too slow (lower than 20 f/min or 6.1 m/min) or the chain is stopped. If
this happens, check for any wood pieces, dust, glue, or anything that obstructs the main
chain to run properly. Also be sure that the main chain motor flow control is set correctly to
maintain a speed between 20 f/min (6.1 m/min) to 112 f/min (24.4 m/min). Changing the
main chain speed can cause synchronization problems at different places in the
production line. It should be calibrated with special cares and only by trained operators,
aware of all the implications of a speed change.
This alarm will occur when any of the manual/stop selectors are turned on to the
manual position, any of the emergency stop switches are pressed or if one of the power
unit, blades or shapers control is turned off. This alarm will be maintained until all
commands are set on proper position.
This alarm can occur when the diagonal transfer tilts. Often, the operator will find no
trace of the problem because by the time the alarm stops the finger jointer, the transfer will
be back in its proper position and the wood pieces will get in the right place. However,
sometimes the pieces will be jammed between chain lugs and the diagonal transfer.
Remove pieces causing this problem and be sure the diagonal transfer is completely
returned to its normal position before restart.
If the air pressure in the press significantly drops, this alarm will occur. The machine
will not start until proper air pressure is obtained. The machine should never be operated
with an inlet air pressure below 90 psi, even if this alarm does not occur. Injuries or severe
machine breakdown will occur if the air pressure is not sufficient.
If one of the electric motors breaker trips, an alarm will sound. You will have to open
the control panel and reset the breaker. If the alarm occurs often, check for what can
cause it. The possible reasons could be the shapers or blades sharpness. They might
need to be sharpened.
If the problem comes from the finger jointer power unit, check for any wood pieces,
dust, glue or anything that prevent the SAI or finger jointer chains to run properly.
If the chains of all the machines seem to be free to run and the power unit breaker
still trips, there might be a problem with the power unit itself. If the problem persists,
contact Doucet Machineries Inc.
Under normal operation, the glue comb should be placed the closer possible to the
finger joints in the wood pieces but without touching it. There is a spring-return device on
the glue applicator that allows it to tilt if the wood pieces touch it, preventing wedging.
Pieces without finger joints or bad positioning of the glue comb can cause the wood pieces
to touch it.
Tilting of the glue applicator will cause the glue comb light to turns on but will not
cause machine stop. It will however draw operator’s attention. If the problem comes from a
bad adjustment, it will flash for each wood pieces tilting the applicator. The operator
should check the glue comb adjustment as soon as possible to prevent future breakdown
and to maintain a good glue application.
Note: this alarm is only a glue applicator tilting concern. It does not remind operator to fill
the glue tank when empty.
Notice:
There are a lot of possibilities for the trouble shooting. The problems listed
above are the most common. If unknown or unlisted problems happen, please
contact Doucet Machineries Inc. and necessary measures will then be taken.
