Quarantine blueprint
1. List the 3 major buildings/locations that are going to be the vertices your quarantine zone.
○ ____________________
○ ____________________
○ ____________________
2. Draw 3 lines on your map to form your quarantine zone. Be sure that the 3 buildings you listed are
inside the zone (You may only have 1 vertical or horizontal line...x = #, y = # )
3. Find the slope (“m”) and the y-intercept (“b”) of each of these lines and make the equation for the
line. Be sure to label the lines on your map as either 1, 2, or 3.
○ b=___________ m=__________ equation 1: ____________________
○ b=___________ m=__________ equation 2: ____________________
○ b=___________ m=__________ equation 3: ____________________
4. Use the graphing method to find the coordinate points of where your quarantine boundaries
intersect. List these points below and label them on your map.
___________ ___________ ___________
4.1 Use substitution or elimination to solve at least 2 of the systems’ solutions that you found in #4. Show
your work on a separate piece of paper.
6. Name 3 places that are a part of the solution set, other than the 3 major buildings listed in part 1. Give
the coordinates for each, and label them on your map.
○ Place X: ____________________ Coordinates: ____________________
○ Place Y: ____________________ Coordinates: ____________________
○ Place Z: ____________________ Coordinates: ____________________
7. Name 3 places that are not a part of the solution set. Give the coordinates for each, and label them on
your map.
○ Place A: ____________________ Coordinates: ____________________
○ Place B: ____________________ Coordinates: ____________________
○ Place C: ____________________ Coordinates: ____________________

8. What would it be like living in your community? Is there easy access to materials, food, or water?
Describe how you think the social environment would be like. Be descriptive and creative! (Do this on
the back of this page or an a separate sheet of paper.)
MATERIALS REPORT
2. Convert this distance into feet. (1 foot = 12 inches) Write your distance below.
○ ___________________ feet
3. Write a system of equations to represent the total cost for purchasing _________ feet (from
part 2) using wood, chain link fencing, and cement blocks. Chain link fencing costs 1 pound of
food and 1.5 gallons of water per 3 feet. Wood fencing costs 2.5 pounds of food and 3 gallons
of water per 3 feet. A set of 16 cement blocks (4 ft by 4 ft) costs 3.5 pounds of food and 4
gallons of water.
○ Chain link: y=________________________________
○ Wood: y=__________________________________
○ Cement blocks: y=____________________________________
4. Choose 2 materials. Use the substitution OR elimination AND graphing method to figure out
the number of feet that would needed of each material in order for the costs to come out the
same. Label the solution. (Use a separate sheet of graphing paper)
5. Which material will you go with? Why? Explain your reasonings behind your choice.
6. In a diary style fashion, write about each day as if your were a survivor in the apocalypse. Be
creative!
○ How did the outbreak start?
○ Where were you when you realized the outbreak happened?
○ How did you end up in this area?
○ Write about the work you had to do to build your quarantine zone.
○ How are you going to survive?

Introduction: A zombie apocalypse has broken out in El Paso, Texas and nearby counties. Luckily, you were at
the right place at the right time and are currently not infected. Military special operatives have assigned your
team the task of organizing a safe zone for the remaining survivors. This quarantine will be bounded between
three locations and further supported with a wall built by your expertise in mathematics and logic.
Tasks
Quarantine Blueprint
1. You and your partner will graph the lines bounding the safe zone on the attached map.
2. You will then find the equations/inequalities represented by these lines using slope (m) and y-
intercept (b).
3. Use the graphing method to find the intersection of these lines (you may use calculator to help if
decimals are involved).
4. Find the inequalities that represent the quarantine zone (shaded area). This is your solution set.
5. Next, describe the environment inside and outside (#6, 7, and 8 on WS).
Materials Report
1. Measure and convert the perimeter of your safe zone.
2. Solve by graphing and substitution.
3. Explain what the solution represents and what you will choose to build with.
Other
1. Make sure all questions on the worksheets are answered in complete sentences.
2. You will each write a diary that includes the following:
a. A backstory on how the outbreak happened (be creative!) and where you were and how you
responded.
b. A daily account on how you built your safe haven community (how you found your
equations/inequalities/etc).
c. Details on how you survived/will survive
3. Presentation: All components are on a colored poster board with labels, names, decorations
(pictures/drawings), and rubric attached.
