NAME OF THE FACULTY : E.VIKRAM

1). Steel column is 120 mm in diameter and 3m long find the intensity of stress and strain when it carries
an axial compressive load of 950KN. E=2X10 5 N/mm 2.

2).Find the minimum diameter of Steel wire with which a load of 3500N can be raised so that the stress
in the wire was not exceeds 130 N/mm 2. , for the diameter chosen. Find the extension of the wire if it is
4m. (E=2X105 N/mm 2.)

3). A rod circular in section tappers from 20 mm diameter at one end 10 mm diameter at the other end
is 20mm. long, and applying axial force of 6 600N if was found to be extend b 0.068 mm. find the Young's
modulus of the rod.

4). A bar of cross section 8 mm. X 8 mm. is subjected to an axial push of 7000N. The lateral dimension of
box changed to 7.99855 mm. If modulus of rigidity of the material is 0.8 X10 5 N/mm 2. Determine the
poisons ratio and modulus of elasticity.

5). A Straight bar of Steel rectangular in section 4m. Long is 18 mm. thicknesses the width of the rod
varies uniformly from 130 mm. at one end 250 mm. at other and if rod is subjected to axial tensile load
of 50KN. find the extension of the rod. (E=2X10 5 N/mm 2) .

6).A compound tube consists of a Steel Tube 200 mm inside diameter and 10 mm thickness and Outer
brass tube 120 mm. internal diameters 10mm. thickness the two bars are of the same length. The
compound tube carries an axial load of 2000kN. find the stresses and the load transmitted to two tubes.
Find also the decrease in the length of the compound tube, if each tube is 200mm.
The modular ratio of steel to brass is (2/1).

7). Reinforced concrete column is 400mm. X 400mm. and is provided with 8 bars of 22mm. diameter find
the safe axial load on column if maximum stress In concrete is limited to 4 N/mm 2. (Es=18Ec).

8). Steel block 360mm. X 80mm. 160 mm is subjected to following forces

1) A tensile force of 1280KN acts on 160 mm X80 mm face

2) A tensile force of 3456KN acts on 360 mm X 80 mm face

3) Compressive force of 1564KN on 160mm.X 36mm.
