The Present.
 ACT I

Scene 1

SETTING: We are here at my Auntie Amy’s house, a

small house located in the residential
area of Bigaa.The house is still okay
and we are staying here for a year now.
AT RISE: John and his sister,Shane is crying
while looking to their mother packing
things for the reason that she will
going to go abroad now.

JOAN
(She knelt down to hug John and Shane)
John promise me that you will take good care of your sister
okay? You’re a big boy now and I know that you can do a
good job even I’m not here with you.
(She broke off the hug then she wiped away the tears in her
children eyes)

JOHN
You’re also leaving us like dad?

JOAN
No, I will just be gone for 2 years .I will come back soon.

JOHN
Promise?
(lift his hand to do a pinky swear)

JOAN
(Do the pinky swear too while crying)
Yes John, I promise.

NARRATOR
After 12 years , John’s mother broke her promise.She did
not come back .They lived with their Auntie and she
financed their schooling.The last time they talked to their
mother was ten years ago.

IN SCHOOL
(Bell ringing means the class is now dismissed)
MIKE
(Sees John walking in the hallway)
Oh, John would you like to come with us? (Put his hand on
John’s shoulder)

JONNEL
Let’s have some party party tonight! Are you in John?

ROGER
And besides its Alexander’s birthday tonight, would you not
want to hang out with us?

JOHN
But…

MIKE
(interrupt john)
No BUT’S okay? Come with us.

JOHN
Okay.

AT THE BAR
(While characters are entering the scene there would be a
party music)

MIKE
Whooooooooo. Let’s have some fun

ALEXANDER
Get your drinks bro’s. It’s my treat

ROGER
How about we call a girl?

MIKE
YESSSSSS. And it is more fun!!

JOHN
(While drinking some beer, he suddenly felt that the phone
is vibrating through his pocket)

Bro, Let me excuse myself and take this call….

(but before he could get out Roger quickly picked John’s

phone)

ROGER
Number 1 rule , no phones allowed during party.
 JOHN
(still shocked by what roger did)

Okay.

(The music get louder and after a while some girls enter
the scene)

ALEXANDER
Oh, here’s the girls

(walking towards the girls)

MIKE
Hi I’m mike.
(lift his hand to do shake hands)

JANE
(accepted the shake hand that mike offered)
I’m Jane.

SHEENA
(walking towards to jonel)
Hi I’m Sheena.

JONNEL
(wink at jane)
Jonel at your service.

ALEXANDER
And meet my girlfriend guys. Kath short for Katherine.

KATHERINE
(wave his hand to them)
Hi guys, you are?
(pointed to john)

ALEXANDER
He’s John.
 ACT II

SCENE 1

NARRATOR
After the party John and his friend decided to stay at
Jonnel’s house. It’s already 6:00 am in the morning when
john decided to come home.The moment he entered their house
he saw an unexpected person- his mother.

JOHN
(looking to her mother up and down while glaring at her)
Excuse me!? Why are you here? Who told you to come here? After
all those years? You’re not welcome here anymore.

JOAN
(saying this in a trembling voice)
John, Let me explain….I…

JOHN
(she cut off what her mother wanted to say)
(shout)No, Stop with your excuses and lies!!
(John walked out)

AUNTIE AMY
(comforting Joan while crying)
I’m sorry Joan we can’t blame him.

NARRATOR
It’s already 10 o’clock when the knock on the door startled
Joan who’s waiting john in the living room.

JOAN
(stands up and face John)
John , can we talk?

JOHN
(walked pass through her mother)
Why are you still here?

JOAN
(she followed him)
John let me explain…

JOHN
(cut off what his mother’s would like to say)
What for? You left us? There’s no need to explain.(turn his
back)

JOAN
I will accept all the hurtful word that you will say.Just
let me stay. Please? (crying)

JOHN
(faced his mother again)
You know what ? you are the most stupid thing that happened
to me and even to Shane I guess.(walked out from the scene)

ACT III

SCENE 1

NARRATOR
Months later, John didn’t come back to home, then one day
he received a text message that his younger sister died.

HOUSE

JOHN
(hurriedly went to his sisters coffin and then start
crying, she looked to his mother angrily)

You? what did you do to her? You stupid mother

JOAN
(shocked by what his son said, she slapped john)

In the first place, It’s your fault Shane wants this family
to be complete. Every night she always say that she misses
you. She got bullied in school got depressed then hanged
herself (emphasizing) IN YOUR OWN ROOM!

JOHN
Is it true auntie?

AUNTIE AMY
Yes john, I’m sorry.

JOAN
(grabs the collar of john)
What can sorry do to your sister who is already dead? I
will not forgive you! (shout) GO AWAY!

JOHN
(He ran away leaving the scene)

NARRATOR
5 years later John moved on to what happened to his sister
and he is now the manager of a Bank company.

ACT I

SCENE 2

NARRATOR
John have a check up every month to know what is the update
about his disease.

AT THE HOSPITAL
Dr. Rivero
(entering the scene)

Good Morning John. Have a seat(sitting down)

JOHN
(sits down too)
Good morning doctor. I didn’t get any sleep last night
thinking about it but I just can’t make sense of it.

DR.RIVERO
What do you mean?

JOHN
That I contracted a disease that’s hard to cure with the
current medical technology , and that I don’t even love a
year left to live. You know how healthy my body right?

DR.RIVERO
Yes

JOHN
If that’s the case maybe you misdiagnosed me? I heard that
a lot of stupid doctor’s misdiagnose a lot of people.

DR. RIVERO
Shall I find another doctor for you? ,if you don’t believe
me?

(sad background music)

JOHN
You know what would happen if I refused to die? Do you have
the final say just because you’re a doctor? How could you
know when I’m going to die? If I said, “I refused to die?”
What happens to me then, huh?

(stop music)

NARRATOR
After that conversation he went to his mother’s “LUGAWAN”
.But the problem is his mother doesn’t accept him anymore
as his son for the reason that she is still blaming john
for what happened to his sister.

JOHN
(enter the place, take a seat)

I’d like 5 bowls of “lugaw” please.

JOAN
(shocked for the unexpected guest , turning back to john)

We don’t sell “lugaw” here Sir.(irritating look)

JOHN

How can a place that specializes in “lugaw” not sell

“lugaw”?

JOAN
It’s up to the owner what this restaurant sells
right?(turning her back) If you really want “lugaw” , go
eat somewhere else.

JOHN
(shout)
I’m too lazy to go somewhere else , so give me some
already!
 JOAN
(shout)
I told you already that I’m not selling any to you!

JOHN
(startled by what his mother said)
Then what are the costumers at the other tables eating?

JOAN
I will only sell it to those costumers. I’m not selling any
to you.

JOHN
Then give me some chicharron and egg, at least!

JOAN
(irritating look)
If you keep interfering with me doing business, I’ll call
the cops!

JOHN
Then I’ll call a lawyer for unfair discrimination!

(enter Jhonny, Joan’s brother)

JOAN

JOHNNY!When this costumer leaves (referring to john)pour a

bucket of salt on the chair where he just seated to purify
it.(walked out)

JOHNNY

(Confused look)

AT JOANS HOUSE (PM)

JOAN

(walking going to her house, he saw John sitting in the

door from a far but she just pass through john)

JOHN

(sitting on the floor)

How can ou ignore your son who’s sleeping out here?

 JOAN

I don’t know what you’re talking about.My son died 5 years

ago.

JOHN

(holding his tears)

MOM.

JOAN

My son died a long time ago, I’m not your mom (turning her
back to john)

JOHN

Come play with me mom.(stands up)

JOAN

(faced his son)

Are you ill?

JOHN

Yes I am. So come play with me.

JOAN

(still poker face, pick out his cellphone from her bag)

Jhonny? where are you? Please come and take this fool away
from me.

JHONNY

Who’s fool?

JOAN

You’ll see who is it if you get here.

(she ended the call)

AT JOHN’S BESTFRIEND HOUSE

LUIS

My goodness, Why did you visit your mom? Do you think she
would welcome you with open arms? Here’s your coffee.

JOHN

Thank you (takes a sip)I just did it. My mom is the one who
makes me think the most.

LUIS

So did you go and make your mom feel frustrated?

JOHN

Of course not.

(takes a sip again)

LUIS

By the way the girl you like for almost 2 years are you
going to confess to her?

JOHN

YES.

AT THE RESTAURANT

JANA

Ohhh, Hi John,thank you for coming here.

JOHN

What are we going to talk about?

JANA

I will just ask some questions; cause our man PD suggesting

that we have document a person’s life but of course it will
be exclusive to those who I am close with.
 JOHN

(a little bit flustered)

Okay, but what should I do first?

JANA

(prepares her tripod, setup the camera and ready herself)

I will just ask a few question then you will just answer it
honestly and that’s it. Easy right?

JOHN

Ahhhh yes.(nodded)

JANA

So let’s start! LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! Let’s assume that

you only have one year to live. A year is all you have
left. Wouldn’t you want to do or see………

JOHN

(cut off what Jana is going to say)

Let’s say I have three months, will you go out with me?
Let’s say I have three months to live. For just three
months passionately. Just for three months. Let’s date each
other like there’s no tomorrow.

JANA

(didn’t know what to react ,then she suddenly turn off the
camera)

Wh…why are you saying this?

JOHN

Because I am dying.

JANA

TCHHHH.Don’t joke around.

JOHN

I am serious. Let’s date Jana.

 ACT II

SCENE 2

AT JOHN’S APARTMENT

NARRATOR

John prepared himself, he wears his beautiful tuxedo, his

beautiful printed necktie and prepared the tripod and
camera.

JOHN

(starting to video himself)

I’m John Manalo. A few months ago the doctor told me that I
didn’t have much long to live. Well, it’s a bit perplexing
but everyone dies anyway.

JANA

What Is it true?

JOHN

(startled by the happenings)

Have you heard everything?

JANA

Why did you not tell me? Your mother didn’t know this too
right?

JOHN

(he suddenly feel dizziness a moment later he fainted)

MOMENT LATER

JOHN

(lying on the floor starting to gain consciousness)

JANA

I will going to call an ambulance

 (dialing on her phone)

JOHN

(stop Jana for dialing the ambulance)

NO, you should go.

(try to stand up, then he succeed)

JANA

Get admitted.

JOHN

NO!

JANA

(crying)

John you’re dying! Let’s go to the hospital.

(grabs the hand of john but just is just too strong so Jana
failed to drag John to the hospital)

AT THE FRONT OF JOHN’S MOTHER “LUGAWAN”

JHONNY
(while closing the “lugawan” he saw Jana crying)

Look, isn’t she the girl that John liked for almost 2
years?

JOAN
(come closer to Jana)

Why are you here?

JANA
I just walked and I ended up here. You can just ignore me
I’m sorry.
(starts to cry again)
 JOAN
Jhonny you can go first.

JHONNY
Okay.
(leaving the scene)

JOAN
(she sat down and start talking to Jana)
Do you want to eat?

JANA
(nodded)

JOAN
The “lugawan” is now closed. Do you want to go over to my
house?

JANA
(nodded)

AT JOAN’S HOUSE
JANA
Ma’am ,I’ll be straight forward .John has tumor in his
brain and he ahs 3 months to live.

JOAN
Don’t joke around!

(started to cry)

JANA
I’m not joking Ma’am.

THE NEXT DAY (JHONNY’S BIRTHDAY PARTY)

(entrance John, Jhonny, Jethro, Jaime, and Juliet)(

sad background music)

NARRATOR
The ambiance is very sad because they knew the situation of
John.They wear eyeglasses today to not be totally see that
they were crying.
 JOHN
(looks around because he noticed that all of them wear
sunglasses)

What is this? Is wearing sunglasses the dress code for

today?

JETHRO
Your mother will not come.(crying)

JHONNY
Yes, she’s busy, she’s such a weird mother. He doesn’t have
much time left.

JOHN
Just like I said she is quite old. Okay uncle Jhonny. Make
your wish.

(silent all characters)

JOHN

Uncle can I make a wish too?(crying)

JHONNY

Sure. Go ahead.

(crying)

JOHN

Please take good care of my mom. Don’t let her suffer.

Don’t let her go lonely. Please stay beside her.

JHONNY

Okay I will.

JOHN

Thank you uncle Jhonny.

 (everyone is crying)

THE NEXT DAY

AT “LUGAWAN”

JHONNY

Let’s go outside let’s have some fun.

(referring to Joan)

JOAN

Have you lost your mind? My son is dying. How can I have
fun when my son is dying?

(cme closer to jhonny and put his arms on his collar)

JHONNY

I know you avoid him and I can’t bear to see him because
you feel guilty and sorry but you’re his mother. Go and see
him.

JOAN
(burst to cry)

ACT III

SCENE 2

THE NEXT DAY

IN FRONT OF JOHN’S APARTMNET

JOAN
(come close to the door then knock)

JOHN
Who are you? Why are you here? Are you here to sell
something?

JOAN
Where is Jana?

JOHN
She went to the grocery are you here to meet her?

JOAN
(she wants to cry ‘cause his son didn’t recognize her at
all)

JOHN
Please come.

(Joan entered the apartment)

JOAN
(sits on the sofa)

JOHN
Take a coffee

JOAN
When will Jana will come back?

JOHN
I don’t know she ruined the “lugaw” she was making.

JOAN
I can make “lugaw”.

JOHN
Really?

JOAN
(nodded)

NARRATOR
While Joan is making ”lugaw”, John is watching her.

AFTER SOME MINUTE (sad background music)

JOHN
(taste the “lugaw”)

JANA
Is it good?
 JOHN
Yes!

JANA
( bring int tears while watching his son eating,when all of
a sudden she stopped eating)

What’s wrong? is it taste bad? Did you find any hair or

something?

JOHN
(Pick the hand of his mother then start crying)

MOM! I’m sorry for not recognizing you.

AFTER SOME MINUTE

JOHN
Mom can I sleep to your arms?

JOAN
Yes sure, I’m sorry son for not forgiving you. That
accident is not really your fault.

JOHN
SHHHH. Forget it mom. I’m sleepy now.

JOAN
(Crying so hard ,loud and painful)
I LOVE YOU SON.

(Joan checked the breathing of his son but he was not

breathing anymore.)

(END OF SCENE)
