1. The poem is tittled as Those Winter Sundays. Without observe the poem.

The tittle is informing

about a specific day in winter. Particularly Sunday. It might represent story about every Sunday
or memory about every Sunday in the winter season.
The word of “those” in the title represent of plural things, which means it happened every and it
has to be gone or not happened anymore. Because, it tells about pointing toward specific
actions in specific days in specific season.

If any changes could be made. I more prefer about using “Lot of Sundays winter”
Well, for me it inform the reader about what happened on the every Sunday in the winter. I put
the implicit meaning of experiences and memories lied within the word of ‘lot’.

2. After the reading the poem about three times just like it told. I can tell that the poem is talking
about experiences that occurred with him in the past days. Particularly in the winter.
The Poem is talking about the coldness and memories.
Here are some the highlights word that I found it as a keyword of this poem.
blueblack cold
Sundays too my father got up early
cold splintering
rooms were warm, he’d call
rise and dress
Speaking, to him
Who, driven out cold
What I know
love’s austere lonely

3.
 SUBJECT : I suggest the subject of the poem is his memory or his regret. But, obviously
the subject is his FATHER.
 Because he was escaping and did not appreciate the love of his father. Obviously in the
last two from last stanza “ what did I know?” it means that he missed his father’s love.
 ABOUT : the poem is talking about the remorse. That means that he is too late to learn
his father’s love. He missed about the alone parenting and how difficult it is. He
regretted he escaping himself as he was a boy.
 ABOUT THE AUTHOR : The author wrote the poem because he misses his memory
when he was a kid and regretted about his ignorance of father’s love and less of
appreciation of it.
 WHEN THE POEM IS HAPPENING : from the readers perspective, it was happening in
many Sunday or every Sunday in the winter.
 WHERE IS THE POEM HAPPENING : in the reader’s perspective it happened in the house
or the building that they lived.
 WHAT IS THE POET’S ATTITUDE : the most attractive word that I concern about the
writing in poet is diction.

a) The writer uses “father” instead of ‘dad’ or ‘daddy’.

It represent their relationship is not that close. Because ‘’Father” is more formal
than ‘’dad’’ that means they are not too close in relationship.

b) And the word of “cold” . objectively it represents the winter as cold or the
season. But the winter it’s more like the coldness of their relationship
c) The poet uses more ‘s’. and some stanza it uses ‘k’
d) The poet always use word that have strong meaning and interpretation

HOW DOES IT SHIFT FROM PERSON TO PERSON : after deep reading about this poem, I can feel

The writer regret or remorse and guilt.

But if the poem is given to others in this specific time it would only present of memories and
experience that he missed.

4. The poem has no particular rhyme.

 SIMILE :
 METAPHOR : “I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.”
 TONE : as I can hear from the poetry, there is no raising tone. There is only strong tone
which is in the last stanza. What did I know, what did I know
 POINT OF VIEW : The poetry uses First View Point. That can easily be seen in the
poetry.
 IMAGERY : “And put his clothes on in the blue black cold”; “Then with cracked
hands that ached” and “and polished my good shoes as well.” For that example,
we could use our sense to describe it within our imagination.
 Alliteration: “What did I know, what did I know”.

5. The poem is generally talking about his memories, experiences, regret, guilt, miss love, sacrifice
and also his father’s struggle.
6. Talking about poem and comprehension. I have read about the poem about 10 times that is the
reason I found the explanation. Just straight to the topic.
If I could change the name of the tittle without altering the whole poetry then I choose to make
the poetry tittled as ”those Father’s Sundays”

7. The reason why I named the poetry like that due to several reasons
a) “those” referring to the memories or experiences that author felt. It also referring to the
feelings such as guilt, missing, ignorances that authors did.
b) “Father’s”. the reason why I use the capitalize word for the ‘F for showing that the huge
distance of the relationship between father and the author
c) And why I do not change the word father becomes ‘dad’ or ‘daddy’ because I still want to
interpret the gap between the author and his father.
d) ‘Sundays’ refers to the activity that every Sunday that the author experienced. As the
poetry tells “ polished my good shoes, as well’’. It represents that it is their activity for going
to the church.

Comparison poem with others :

As the poem becomes well-known and quickly spreading across the globe, so many
poems that seemly similar to others. Due to the poem is mainly about love family and particularly
father’s sacrifice. Therefore, In this chance I will choose one poem that close enough with the
first poem that we have been discussed. Without further ado, let’s begin.

In my opinion this poem has some similiarities with the poem by chairil anwar titled as : Aku
Cinta Ayah by Chairil Anwar

It tells about father’s love but less of regret. If the Robert Hayden talk about his regret case of
his ignorance, but he recall it through the poem. Similar to the poem by Chairil Anwar that
remembering of his father’s love and passion.
It is so hard to find the poetry that similar to the Robert Hayden.

8. Important experience from the author is

 His parents’ divorce.
It makes him had to live in foster system. Unfortunately his new parents raise him with low-
income. The fight of his parents had influenced him jumped into the deep whole and severe
depression.
 Isolated from the society.
Because of his trauma of his parents he found literature as his savior.
He developed many poetry. Robert hayden spent many times to look of African-american
poetry.

Influenced experience :
 Vietnam war.
Actually the “those winter Sundays” is written in 1966 when there is a Vietnam war in 1960’s.
He is really upset about violence, it was affected by his childhood.
 Violence
He felt really trauma due to the violent experience of his childhood that shown in the word
“blueblack cold” it represents of his inappropriate situation.
