1 OVERVIEW
This specification covers the Particular Requirements for the design,
manufacture, testing and shipment of Squirrel Cage Induction Motors as detailed
in IEEE Std 841 (Standard for Petroleum and Chemical Industry – Severe Duty
Totally Enclosed Fan–Cooled (TEFC) Squirrel Cage Induction Motors – up to and
including 500 hp), for use in oil refineries, gas plants, chemical plants, exploration
and production facilities, and supply/marketing installations owned by PDVSA.
This specification along with the Owner’s Induction Motor Data Sheet (Appendix
“A”) and the requirements of IEEE Std 841 shall be considered complementary.
Any conflict among them shall be referred to the Owner for clarification before
proceeding with design and manufacture.
The following clauses are amendments, supplements or additions to IEEE Std
841. Clauses that are not mentioned herein shall remain applicable as written.
When the word “should” appears in the IEEE Std 841, it must be substituted by
“shall” and, therefore, considered mandatory.
The additional requirements or clarifications specified herein are required in order
to:
a. Make selections from the options given in the IEEE Std 841.
b. Specify additional and more stringent requirements, as necessary, to
operate and maintain motors according to PDVSA practices.
The following paragraph numbers refer to those used in IEEE Std 841 or added
in this specification.

1.1 Scope (Exception)

This standard applies to high efficiency total enclosed fan–cooled (TEFC),
horizontal and vertical, single speed, squirrel cage polyphase induction motors,
up to and including 500 hp, in NEMA frame sizes 143T and larger, for petroleum,
chemical, and other severe duty applications (commonly referred to as severe
duty motors). Excluded from the scope of this standard are motors with sleeve
bearings, except as required in subclause 6.1.d, and additional specific features
required for explosion–proof motors.

1.2 Exceptions (Addition – New Subclause)

Bidder shall state in his offer that the motor complies with the requirements of this
Specification without exception, or shall declare the exceptions and/or deviations
giving a clear explanation and proposed options (see Appendix “D”).
If permitted in the requisition, the Bidder may offer alternative proposals for price
or technical advantage, but such proposals shall constitute a supplement to the
main offer.

1.3 Responsibilities (Addition – New Subclause)

When the motor is supplied as part of equipment packages (e.g. compressor, fan
and pump sets), driven equipment Manufacturer shall be responsible for the
operation of motor–driven equipment combination according to this specification.
Therefore, he is responsible for obtaining the Motor Data and submit it to the
Owner.
When motor is ordered to replace an existing motor, Manufacturer shall be
responsible for supplying the motor that best matches the driven equipment data
supplied by Owner.

2 REFERENCES (ADDITION)
For any details not mentioned in the referenced standard, the Manufacturer shall
submit his proposed standards for Owner’s approval. If required, the
Manufacturer shall provide a copy of them.
Written approval must be obtained for the construction of motors using other
standards (IEC, DIN, etc.).

3 SERVICE CONDITIONS
3.1 Unusual Service Conditions (Addition)
g) Starting method other than across–the–line starting.
h) Automatic reacceleration with full opposite residual voltage, under full load
conditions, and at any voltage between 80% and 100% of the rated voltage
applied at the motor terminals.

3.2 Guarantee (Addition – New Subclause)

Manufacturer shall furnish motor and accessories of proper design and
construction, electrically and mechanically suitable for the particular operating
and service conditions as specified in Appendix “A”. The motor expected life time
shall be, at least, 20 years, excepting the anti–friction bearing mentioned in 6.1.d.

4 ELECTRICAL PERFORMANCE
4.1 Motor Design and Starting Characteristics (Addition)
c) If it is specified in Appendix “A”” that the medium voltage motors will be
controlled by circuit breakers, the motor Manufacturer shall furnish a suitable type
of insulation, if it is applicable. Manufacturer shall also specify the characteristics
of surge suppressors, if they are necessary to prevent failure due to high
frequency oscillations on closing .

If surge suppressors are required at the motor terminals, motor Manufacturer

shall supply them. On the other hand, if the surge suppressors at switchgear are
needed, they will be supplied and installed by others.

4.2 Insulation System and Temperature Rise (Addition)

5.4.a Insulation System
5.4.a3 All motors above 200 hp shall use vacuum–pressure– impregnated
(VPI) form windings. Motors up to 200 hp shall use high quality enameled
wire, as a minimum.
5.4.a4 Immersion test is not required.
5.4.a7 The stator winding material shall be copper.

5.4.c Temperature Sensing Devices (Addition – New Subclause)

b) (Addition) Grease packed bearings shall only be provided if the dN factor is less
than 50000 (the dN factor is the product of bearing size (bore) in millimeters and
the rated speed in revolutions per minute). If the grease relubrication interval is
smaller than 1000 hours, bearings shall be oil lubricated.
d) (Exception) Bearings shall be selected to provide an L–10 life of 40000 hrs
minimum per ANSI/ABMA 9–1990 or ANSI/ABMA 11–1990, at rated radial and
axial loads and rated speeds.
Sheave size and belted applications for motors above 200 hp and belted
applications for two–pole motors above 25 hp shall be approved by Owner.

wire cages. A permanent indication of the proper oil level shall be accurately
located and clearly marked on the outside of the bearing housing with permanent
metal tags, marks inscribed in the castings, or another durable means. If the oil
level indicator breaks accidentally, the resulting drop in oil level shall not result in
loss of bearing lubrication, that is, reduction of the oil level below the level required
for normal operation.
f) (Exception) Bearings and bearings housing shall be coated with a rust
preventive compound, compatible to the type of oil or grease required by the
bearing in operation.
g) (Exception) Oil mist lubrication systems are not acceptable.
h) (Addition) Bearings for motors above 200 hp shall be electrically insulated. A
removable shorting device shall be provided in the bearing housing on the drive
end. For double–end motors, the bearing and coupling on one end shall be
electrically insulated. Motors below 250 hp with a shaft voltage higher than 250
mV (peak), when tested per IEEE Std 112, require grounding the shaft and/or
insulating a bearing.
i) (Addition) Oil lubricated bearings shall use standard hydrocarbon oils.
Synthetic oils are not acceptable.
j) (Addition) Anti–friction bearings shall be retained on the shaft and fitted into
housings in accordance with the requirements of ABMA Standard 7. The device

tongue–type lock washer.
k) (Addition) If specified in Appendix “A”, bearing temperature sensing devices
shall be supplied.

5.2 Rotor and Shaft (Addition)

Rotor cage construction of all medium voltage motors shall be copper or a copper
alloy (aluminium are not acceptable). Furthermore, it shall permit the addition of
weights for balancing.
For low voltage motors, aluminium die cast construction is acceptable, unless
otherwise specified in Appendix “A”.
Motors shall withstand overspeeds according to NEMA MG–1 (20.44).
