The house was to be designed for a father-son duo who recently

faced the loss of the lady of the house. In this scenario, it

was important to create a space that encourages soothing

environment, gives a strong spiritual character, and brings the

nature and man in harmony.

The house is planned as a G+1 structure with spacious facilities. The internal
planning creates seamlessly interconnecting volumes and free-flowing spaces. The
connection with the external courtyard flows naturally. Nature subtly expresses its
power and presence through the elements of waterbody, skylights, courtyards, and
verandahs. The addition of these elements allows the house to breathe in the urban
context where nature is otherwise overlooked.

The natural light fills the spaces and adds glow to the materials and textures. The
light that filters through the screen creates an interesting play of light and shadow.
The house makes an introverted and bold expression from the façade with features
like color contrast, design elements and the layers of walls. The plan was organized
around a northern courtyard and water body with the double height living room
looking into it.

The entrance was conceived through a screened verandah, overlooking the water
body on one side and living room in the front. This allowed for a complete absence
of window coverings as no direct sunlight penetrated the central space but provided
ample natural light throughout the day. The dispersal of light in this courtyard
develops a calm environment in the living. The interconnecting volumes in the
section allow the cross axes to be visible as soon as one enters the house.

The project houses a total of three bedrooms. The father’s master bedroom is planned
on the ground floor, whereas the son’s master bedroom and guest bedroom are
housed on the upper level. These two master bedrooms are organized in such a way
that they open into the central space, diagonally in the section thus, creating strong
visual connectivity.

The domestic help and other services are housed on the third level with separate
access from an external service staircase. The open kitchen with a dining area along
with a lounge is ideal since there are only 2 occupants in the house. Although a separate
spice kitchen is provided at the back for the domestic help and other services.

The textures and the variance in the material palette uplift the look, feel and aura
of the house and the internal spaces. The spaces are defined by neatly employed
materials, bold lines, clean geometry, and minimalist interiors. The overall project
was conceived in a monochromatic palette that lends a meditative character to the
house. The interior surfaces are simply stone clad or white painted with patterns of
shadows created from external screens being the principal focus. The ocean black
stone used in different finishes is a local stone available in Rajasthan. The only
other material used is strips of the mirror to add to the illusive character of space.
