MARINE SURVEY

On Hire/Off Hire Survey

An on/off hire survey is usually done in combination with a bunker quantity survey and is
carried out when a vessel is delivered to the Charterer or re-delivered to its Owner.
The survey can be carried out on behalf of Owners, Charterers or for mutual interest.
Bunker Survey
Surveys during bunkering are necessary to make sure that the quantity mentioned on the
bunker delivery receipt is actually received on board. In this case, our surveyor will assess
the quantity of bunkers on board of the delivering barge (all tanks) and on board of the
receiving vessel. All this before commencement of bunkering and after completion of
bunkering. The difference between the contents before and after bunkering, is the actual
delivered quantity.
Super Cargo/Port Captain
In this role, our expert can for example inspect the cargo, prepare a stowage plan, liaise with
the stevedore and supervise the actual loading. Furthermore, he will assist the Master with
documentation and keep him informed of the progress.
Draught Survey
The displacement will be assessed in accordance with international guidelines and consists
of an initial and final survey. Both survey results will be entered in a computer-based
programme, which will calculate the final figures.
Hull & Machinery
We are able to determine the nature and extent of damage to a vessel’s hull and machinery.
This may include preparation of repair specifications, soliciting of bids, negotiating costs, and
acting as the Owner’s representative throughout the repair period.
Tank/Hold Inspections
Prior to loading (sensitive) cargo into a cargo tank or hold it is essential to know if the
compartment is suitable to carry the commodity.

This means a skilled surveyor needs to carry out an inspection to check whether such a
compartment is clean, dry, free from smell and in all respects fit for use.
Bunker Disputes
Apart from quality problems, we also see more and more quantity disputes. These short
deliveries have different reasons, but often they could have been avoided if certain
procedures had been properly followed by ship’s engineers. Having said this, it is known that
certain tricks are applied by less prudent suppliers.

Our surveyors can give the specialized assistance which is needed to manage such quality
and quantity disputes.
Lashing & Securing Surveys
When we are engaged in the stowage, lashing and securing of heavy cargo units on deep
sea vessels, we monitor the safe handling and loading of the cargo units, give advice on
proper stowage and verify that the cargo units are lashed and secured in a seaworthy
manner.
P&I Condition Surveys
On behalf of P&I Clubs we carry out shipboard inspections in order to establish the physical
condition of the vessel and the effectiveness of the on-board management.
Risk Assessment
We carry out several types of risk assessments, such as:
 Inspection of a ship’s cargo tanks or cargo holds in order to determine its suitability to carry
a specific type of cargo.
 Determine whether a certain bulk commodity is safe for overseas transport, i.e. without
running the risk that such a cargo liquefies during the voyage and adversely affects the
ship’s stability.
 Ultrasonic testing of weather deck hatch covers, in order to verify the weather tight integrity
of such hatch covers. When defects are found, give advice regarding remedial measures to
be taken to resolve the matter.

Pre Purchase Survey

In a pre-purchase survey our surveyors carry out a thorough inspection of a ship, usually on
behalf of a potential buyer in order to establish the condition of the ship’s structure, systems,
installations, accommodation, etc.
Mediation
Our expert knowledge can provide answers to questions and solutions to problems for
marine related cargoes or equipment, operational or logistic issues, or any other specialized
projects that may require specific knowledge or advice.

We have been asked to give a second opinion on cases, or to operate as a mediator, in

order to avoid expensive arbitration.
Pre-loading Survey
Pre-loading surveys are aimed at assessing the condition of the cargo before it is loaded on
board of the vessel.

In such cases our surveyor will examine the condition of the cargo and advise the Master
regarding remarks to be made on the relevant cargo documents.
Cargo Container Repair Inspection
This Inspection Survey ensures the container is once again suitable for the
transportation of goods, will be able to withstand rated weight loads, and any other
unique and specific rating the container might have.
Container Damage Surveys

We will survey the Cargo with the utmost care are accurately report any damaged
caused by fire, explosions, water, other liquids, shortages, or other Cargo related
damages.

Container and Cargo Damage Surveys are required by many insurance companies in
order to file an accurate, third party verified loss claim.

Cargo Container Cleanliness & Suitability Surveys

Not all shipping and cargo containers were created equal. And even if they are created
equal, time and wear mean that some are simply not suitable for continued use
anymore.

Produce Cargo Surveys

Lots of things can happen to Cargo when it travels long distances or sits arou nd for a
while. If that Cargo contains edible products, it may require an Produce Cargo Survey
Inspection before being shipped off or changing hands again.
