Learning Competencies
 determines the relationship between the hypothesis and the conclusion
of an if-then statement
 transforms a statement into an equivalent if-then statement
 determines the inverse, converse, and contrapositive of an if-then
statement
 illustrates the equivalences of: (a) the statement and its contrapositive; and
(b) the converse and inverse of a statement
 uses inductive or deductive reasoning in an argument
 writes a proof (both direct and indirect)

A conditional statement is a logical statement that has two parts, a hypothesis

and a conclusion. When a conditional statement is written in if-then form, the “if”
part contains the hypothesis and the “then” part contains the conclusion.
If two lines intersect to form a right angle, then they are perpendicular.
H: two lines intersect to form a right angle
C: they [the lines] are perpendicular

Identify the hypothesis and the conclusion in the following items.

1. If a number is a whole number, then it is an integer.
2. If 2𝑥 − 1 = 5, then 𝑥 = 3.
3. 8𝑦 = 40 implies 𝑦 = 5.
4. ∠1 ≅ ∠2 if 𝑚∠1 = 𝑚∠2.

5. 𝑅𝑆 = 𝑅𝑇 if 𝑆 is the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅
𝑅𝑇.

6. 2(𝑎 + 𝑏) = 2𝑎 + 2𝑏.
7. If 2𝑧 − 5 = −3, then 2𝑧 = 2.
8. ∠𝑃 implies ∠𝑃.
9. If ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 ≅ ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ .
𝐵𝐶 , then 𝐵 is the midpoint of 𝐴𝐶
10.If a line lies in a vertical plane, then the line is vertical.

Identify the hypothesis and the conclusion in the following items. Afterwards,
state the reason in the relationship of the hypothesis and the conclusion.
1. If a triangle is equiangular, then the angles are congruent.
2. 5𝑦 = −20 implies 𝑦 = −4.
3. If 4𝑥 − 1 = 11, then 𝑥 = 3.
4. If 𝑅𝑆 = 𝑇𝑊, then 𝑇𝑊 = 𝑅𝑆.
5. If 𝐴𝐵 = 𝐶𝐷, 𝐶𝐷 = 𝐸𝐹, and 𝐸𝐹 = 23, then 𝐴𝐵 = 23.
6. If 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 70 and 𝑦 = 3𝑥, then 2𝑥 + 3𝑥 = 70.
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐶𝐷
7. If 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ and 𝐶𝐷
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐸𝐹 ̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐸𝐹
̅̅̅̅ , then 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ .
𝑧
8. If = 10, then z = 50.

9. If 𝑀 is the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅ ≅ ̅̅̅̅̅

𝐴𝐵, then 𝐴𝑀 𝑀𝐵.
10.If point 𝐵 lies in the interior of ∠𝐴𝑂𝐶, then m<AOB + m<COB=m<AOC
