Emergency actions

Q. Steering gear failure action.

Ans. A steering gear failure can occur at any time during auto or manual steering.

Treat as emergency , act swiftly.

Indication:

1.If on Auto-Steering The Off course alarm rings.

2.If on Manual The ship begins to drift and no amount of wheel can check the drift. It would be noticed that the
Rudder Indicator is not Moving.

Action in case of Steering Gear Failure:

0. Inform master.

1. If on Auto-Steering, the first action is to change over to Hand steering.

2. The 1st suspect is ‘Telemotor failure’. Telemotor transmit the wheel to steering gear.

3. Switch over to other Telemotor ‘System’ (Marked as System 1 / 2).

4. Problem still not resolved, next suspect is the Steering Motor.

5. Change from Steering Motor 1 to Steering Motor 2.

6. Problem not solved? next suspect is failure of both telemotor system.

7. Turn the mode selection switch to NFU.

8. Problem not solved? it means that all means for steering from the bridge failed, the last resort is Emergency
steering from the Steering gear compartment.

9. Drop anchor if in shallow water/ If in Deep Sea you will drift , just monitor the set and drift from the DR position.

Caution:

1. After each corrective step, the rudder would have to be tried out. Pay heed to traffic before doing so.

2. If in restricted waters with traffic around, reduce to minimum speed.

3. Inform ships in vicinity by safety message PAN PAN, display NUC lights/ shapes.

4. Master and E/R to be informed.


Q. Rudder stuck? What to do? [This answer to be merged with steering gear failure answer]

Answer.

Action in case Rudder stuck at 10 degrees to stbd or port

• Inform master.

• Wheel on hand steering.

• Try out the other steering motor.

• If not working check rudder angle indicator.

• After consulting muster reduce speed and stop engines.

• Display NUC lights.

• Send securite message.

• Send responsible person to try out steering gear.

• If in narrow channel and more time required, proceed to drop anchor.

• Record all events.
