Testing And Adjusting

Introduction
NOTE: For Specifications with illustrations, make reference to SPECIFICATIONS FOR 930R
WHEEL LOADER POWER TRAIN, Form No. SENR2431. If the Specifications in Form
SENR2431 are not the same as in the Systems Operation and the Testing and Adjusting, look at
the printing date on the back cover of each book. Use the Specifications given in the book with the
latest date.

Troubleshooting
Always make visual checks first, operation checks second, and instrument checks third.

Visual Checks
1. Check the oil level in the differentials.

2. Check the oil level in the transmission.

3. Check all oil lines, hoses and connections for leaks or damage.

4. Check all external valves for leaks or damage.

5. Check for oil on the ground under the machine.

6. Check the transmission control for damage.

7. Let the oil out of the housing for the transmission oil filter. Remove and check the filter element
for foreign material.

a. Shiny steel particles give the indication of wear and/or failure in the oil pump.
b. Aluminum particles give the indication of a failure in the torque converter.
c. Rubber particles (seal or hose material) give the indication of a hose or seal failure.
d. A heavy accumulation of black rubber material on the filter element gives the indication
of worn clutch discs in the transmission.

e. Iron or steel chips give the indication of broken components in the transmission, torque
converter or transfer gears.

If you find rubber, aluminum, iron or steel particles, all components of the hydraulic system must
be washed clean. Do not use parts with damage. Use new parts.

Checks During Operation

To prevent personal injury when checks are made while the machine is
in operation, make sure only approved personnel are on the machine.
Keep other personnel off the machine and in view of the operator. Make
sure checks are done in an open area.

NOTICE

With the parking brake ENGAGED, move the machine in case of an

emergency only. Fire and damage to the parking brake can be the
result if the machine is moved too far.

Release the parking brake. Operate the machine in each direction and speed. Make note of all
noises that are not normal and find their sources.

If the operation of the machine is not correct, make reference to the CHECK LIST DURING
OPERATION for "problems" and "probable causes".

ELECTRONIC SHIFT CONSOLE

When a DIRECTION and SPEED SELECTOR is moved to a direction and speed, normally the
transmission will engage the correct direction clutch and speed clutch. When it does not, there is a
problem which can be in the four solenoids, the wiring harnesses and connectors, or the direction
and speed control unit on the steering column.

When there is a problem, check the operation of the solenoids first.

M-1 Solenoid

Should the M-1 solenoid fail to energize (open), the problem (failure) would show up only when
the operator tries to operate the machine in reverse.

M-2 Solenoid

Should the M-2 solenoid fail to energize (open), it would show up only in FIRST SPEED
(FORWARD or REVERSE). Failure of the M-2 solenoid to energize would cause the third (K3)
speed clutch to engage instead of the first (K1) speed clutch. The machine would go forward or in
reverse, but would not have as much power in third speed as it would in first speed.

M-3 Solenoid

Should the M-3 solenoid fail to energize (open), the FORWARD or REVERSE direction clutches
would not engage and the machine would not move.

M-4 Solenoid

Should the M-4 solenoid fail to energize (open), the transmission would operate in THIRD
SPEED (FORWARD or REVERSE) only, regardless of what speed position the direction and
speed selector is moved to (except neutral).

OPERATIONAL CHECK OF SOLENOIDS To Check

Operation Of M-1, M-2 And M-3 Solenoids
With the engine running, move the direction and speed selector from NEUTRAL to FIRST
SPEED - REVERSE. If the transmission shifts and causes the machine to move in the REVERSE
direction, the M-1 and M-3 solenoids are energizing and operating correctly. If the transmission is
in FIRST SPEED (SLOW WITH POWER) rather than THIRD SPEED, the M-2 solenoid is
operating correctly.

To Check Operation Of The M-4 Solenoid

In order to check the M-4 solenoid, move the speed selector to the SECOND SPEED position. If
the M-4 solenoid energizes, the transmission will upshift to SECOND SPEED. Should the
transmission shift to THIRD SPEED, the M-4 solenoid is not energizing and has failed.

When a solenoid is suspected of having failed, there are several checks to be made before
replacing it. Check to be sure: the wire clip from the wiring harness to the solenoid is making
contact; the pins and sockets in the circular connector are clean and making contact.

Transmission Pressure Adjustment

When tests and adjustments are made to the torque converter, the
parking brake must be OFF. To prevent movement of the machine and
personal injury do the procedure that follows.

1. Lower the bucket to the ground.

2. Put blocks in front of and behind the wheels.

3. Install the anti-pivot link.

4. Remove both front and rear axle shafts.

5. Let only approved personnel on the machine and keep other personnel off of the machine and in
clear view of the operator.

6. Put the selector lever in THIRD SPEED-FORWARD.

7. Run the engine at stall speed (2135 ± 30 RPM).

NOTE: All tests and adjustments must be made with the oil in the hydraulic control system at
normal temperature of operation 175 ± 15° F (80 ± 8° C).
