About Applications and Industries
Fast and accurate verification of critical materials (PMI)
on different industries

X-MET5100 and X-MET5000 enable accurate and

faster verification of critical materials in the PMI
testing process along the whole metal manufacturing
supply chain -

• inspection of incoming goods

• testing during production and
• manufacturing of goods

Important tool in routine maintenance

when building up a power plant
or petrochemical plant
Field conditions are tough on PMI tools!

• An analyzer must be able to measure the alloying elements at

very low concentrations (e.g. Ti in stainless steels at the level of
0.05%)
• Material range is often very wide .
• The analyzer must be robust and easy to use
• Fast, accurate results are a pre-requisite
• For most applications calibration of the unit must be traceable
• For these reasons EDXRF is the preferred measurement
technique when carbon or boron measurement is not required

OI has now the range of highly productive mobile testing

tools for these specific needs of both PMI inspectors
and scrap sorters.
uJjbqRNMM - New PMI applications
for hand-held analysis

• X-MET5100 elemental detection limits enable

ppm level analysis in just 10 seconds

• This level of performance improves productivity and

opens up new applications for hand-held analysis

• X-MET5100 can rapidly perform challenging trace

element analysis such as

• FAC inspection (Cr in low alloy steels) in the nuclear power

industry and
• QC of microalloyed steels used in the automotive industry.
X-MET5100 - Revolutionary Light Element
analysis without vacuum or helium bottles
• X-MET5100 provides fast, highly accurate laboratory quality
chemical analysis of Aluminum and Titanium alloys

• It reliably analyzes Light Elements such as silicon and

phosphorus from copper, nickel and steel alloys

• Powerful Light Element capability combined with the non-

destructive nature of the XRF technique makes
X-MET5100 an invaluable tool or the aerospace industry where
often finished or sensitive samples need to be analyzed

• The efficient Light Element capability provides added

confidence for accurately identify nickel and copper
alloys which may contain large amounts of aluminum
and silicon.
X-MET5100 - Light Element Analysis
Typical examples where light element capability brings most value:

• Separation of cast and wrought aluminium alloys (based on the

Si content)
• Identification of 5000 series alloys (based on Mg content) in marine and
automotive applications
• Distinguishing 4000 series from the 1000, 5000 or 6061 alloys
(based on Si content)
• Distinguishing titanium alloys which are differentiated by their aluminium
content
• Ensuring correct Cu analysis and ID for Al/Si bronzes (Bronzes may
contain up to 6% Si and 12% Al) Measured Light Elements:
• Ensuring correct Ni content for Al containing Nickels (Ni alloys such as • Aluminum LE: Mg, Al, Si
Monel K500, Inco 713, Inco 730 contain up to 6% Al • Titanium LE: Al
• Copper LE: Al, Si, P
• Nickel LE: Al, Si
General limitations of the light element analysis: • Stainless LE: Si, S
• Thin 4µm protective window needs to be used, which is more fragile • Low Alloy LE: Si, P, S
than standard 25µm Kapton® window Universal standardless FP
• Accurate light element analysis requires flat and clean sample surface, calibration for alloys (Mg-
this may restrict the use in applications like scrap sorting U)
The analyzer of choice in all
conditions, on-site or in-field
• The material to be inspected can be difficult to access
(e.g. a refinery platform)
• X-METs are battery operated, compact, robust and withstands harsh use

• The material to be inspected can be hot (e.g. like a tube in a power

plant)
• Integrated heat shield allows the measurement of hot test piece surfaces
for extended periods
- up to 400°C / 750°F - X-MET5000 (X-MET5100 thick window version
only, light elements then not available)

• The weld material often needs to be verified from narrow seam

(material around the seam must be excluded)
• X-METs enable the analysis of narrow weld seams down
to 2 mm
Analyze large or small samples structures like bolts, thin
tubes or honeycomb in seconds – just point and shoot

• X-MET compensates for the shape of sample

• Inspect pipes and welds for corrosion resistance
and pressure equipment for alloy composition
• Wires of less than 1mm in diameter can be
identified in seconds
• Avoid material mix-ups
• High speed averaging function – up to 50
successive measurements for fast effortless batch
evaluation
• A practically unlimited number of grades can

Three modes of operation

N
Empirical Assay Calibration mode produces fast, accurate analysis even at
low concentrations. Traceable reference standards establish the
calibration.

O
Fundamental Parameters (FP) is a universal standardless calibration
where practically any combination of physically measurable element can
be analyzed with good accuracy. FP can measure up to 30 elements
between Mg-U (X-MET5100) and Ti-U (X-MET5000) regardless of
concentration.

P
PASS/FAIL mode offers a convenient, fast way to sort material e.g. during
delivery inspection

These three modes run smoothly together even when the user has no information
about the material’s composition.
