Despite the widespread sex education and peer counseling and guidance, there still is a wide prevalence

of teen pregnancy, a challenge that does not only affect the teenagers but the society at large.
According to the National statistics Office, approximately 106.2 Million Filipinos was recorded on the
population data of the Philippines during the year 2018, and 49.2% of the total live births were born out
of wedlocks. Which made the Philippines rank 3rd in having the highest rate of early teenage
pregnancies among youths ageing 15-19 all over the countries in asia pacific region. People often blame
the media for the outgrowing cases of teenage pregnancy in our country, for it offers little sex education
and is offering more vulgar images of how a young girl is supposed to look , act, or be. But for me, the
media is the least to be blamed. Home is where child’s character is developed. In order for a plant to die,
you must target the roots, not the leaves. We must correct the roots, parenting, in order to get rid of
false beliefs. Parenting must include parents imparting knowledge about sex education to their children
when they’re already in the right age, in a sense that they’ll tackle how Pre marital sex and early
childbirth would affect their children themselves, the downsides of it, and how would they be able to
prevent it. A talk about sex education from parents to their children will do. But that’s the problem, we
don’t get to talk much about it, because of the fear the more parents talk about it, the more they’re
pushing their children to be engaged with pre marital sex and result to teenage pregnancy, which is only
one of the hundred misconceptions of parents about openness of information about sex, sexuality and
sex education. Research has long established that teens who watch movies, or listen to music that
glamorizes drinking, drug use or violence tend to engage in those behave themselves but in contrary,
having access with right information about sex and sexuality, with supervision of elders, is a really good
thing, particularly that it encompasses access to a much wider range of views and enables the learner to
find answers to questions they wanted to ask, and develop understanding not restricted by perceived
out dated, taboo, moral codes from society. If a child is well- educated about sex, he will not be affected
whatever the media shows or implies. On the other hand media instead of offering less information
about sex education and more on about the downsides of sex, must be a platform to launch campaigns
to reduce cases of early pregnancies and childbirth. In my insight, the rate of teenage pregnancy could
be reduced by having access to Right sex education, and there should be access to legal and safe
abortions
