Hangout in Detail
Start a Hangout

You can send and receive messages with one person or multiple people.

Computer

Start a conversation
1. On your computer, go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail. If you have the
Hangouts Chrome extension, Hangouts will open in a new window.
2. At the top, click New conversation .
3. Enter and select a name or email address.
4. Type your message. You can also add emojis, photos, or your location.
5. On your keyboard, press Enter.

Get messages
You can control who can send you messages. Learn how to change your invite settings.

When you select your Hangout window:

 The message will be marked as read. This means that the message will no longer appear as
bold and your profile image shows up under the last message sent in the conversation.
 If you close or minimize your Hangout window, your profile photo will not appear.
 People can also see the type of device you use and if you’re online. Learn how to change
these settings.

Android

Start a conversation
1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
2. At the bottom right, tap Add New Conversation .
3. Type and select a person's name.
4. Enter your message. You can also add emojis, photos, your location, or a sticker.
5. Tap Send .

Get messages
You can control who can send you messages. Learn how to change your invite settings.

When you select your Hangout window:

 The message will be marked as read. This means that the message will no longer appear as
bold and your profile image shows up under the last message sent in the conversation.

 If you close or minimize your Hangout window, your profile photo will not appear.
 People can also see the type of device you use and if you’re online. Learn how to change

Get started with Hangouts

You can use Hangouts to:

 Start a chat conversation or video call.


 Make phone calls using Wi-Fi or data.
 Send text messages with your Google Voice or Google Fi phone number.

Hangouts sync automatically across devices. If you start a Hangout on your computer, you can
continue your chat on another device, like your phone.

Notes:

 In March 2017, we announced plans to evolve classic Hangouts to focus on two experiences
that help bring teams together: Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. Both Chat and Meet are
available today for G Suite customers and will be made available for consumer users, too.
We have not announced an official timeline for transitioning users from classic Hangouts to
Chat and Meet. We are fully committed to supporting classic Hangouts users until everyone
is successfully migrated to Chat and Meet.
 Classic Hangouts is not available in China.
 Your Family Link account can use Hangouts on Android but not on iPhones/iPads.

On Internet Explorer and Safari, download and install the latest version of the Hangouts plugin.

What you need to make video calls


 Broadband connection to the Internet.
 USB web camera. Other devices, like virtual cameras, may not work.
 Any quad core processor.

How much bandwidth you need

Hangouts changes how much bandwidth is used based on your network.

Minimum bandwidth required

 Outbound: 300 kbps


 Inbound: 300 kbps

Ideal bandwidth for two-person video calls

 Outbound: 3.2 mbps


 Inbound: 2.6 mbps

Ideal bandwidth for group video calls

 Outbound: 3.2 mbps


 Inbound (with 5 participants): 3.2 mbps
 Inbound (with 10+ participants): 4.0 mbps

Android

Download and sign in to Hangouts


1. On your Android phone or tablet, download the Hangouts app .
2. Learn how to sign in on Hangouts.

To call someone’s phone number using the Hangouts app, download the Hangouts Dialer.

Use accessibility features


Learn how to use Android accessibility features on Hangouts, like how to make phone calls.

Sign in or out of Hangouts

When you sign in or out of Hangouts on one device, you aren’t automatically signed in or out of
Hangouts on other devices.

For example, if you sign in on your computer, you're not automatically signed in on your phone.

Computer

Sign in
1. On your computer, go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.
2. Enter your Google Account information.
3. Click Sign in. In Gmail, on the left, click Sign in.

To use Hangouts with multiple accounts at the same time, you can:

 Use a different browser for each account.


 Set up a separate Chrome profile for each account. You can switch between profiles in
separate Chrome windows. Learn how to set up a Chrome profile.
 Install the Hangouts Chrome extension.

Sign out of hangouts.google.com

When you sign out of hangouts.google.com, you sign out of other Google services, including Gmail,
Inbox, and Google+.

1. On your computer, go to hangouts.google.com.


2. At the top right, click your profile photo.
3. Click Sign out.

Sign out of Hangouts on Gmail, Inbox, or classic Google+


When you sign out of Hangouts in Gmail, Inbox, or classic Google+, you won't sign out of
hangouts.google.com or other Google services.

1. On your computer, open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. At the top of your Hangouts list, click the Down arrow .
3. Scroll to the bottom, and click Sign out of Hangouts.

Start a video call

You can connect with family, friends, or coworkers through face-to-face video calls. Video calls can
include up to 25 people.

Computer

Before you start your first video call


 Check the system requirements for Hangouts.
 Connect a camera, microphone, and speakers to your computer. Make sure they have the
latest software.
 When asked to use your computer's camera and microphone, click Allow.
 Download and install the latest version of the Hangouts plugin for Internet Explorer and
Safari browsers.

Allow Hangouts to use your camera and microphone


Chrome

Hangouts video calls need to use your computer's camera and microphone so you can start your
video call.

If you're using a work, school, or other account that doesn’t end in @gmail.com, you might need to
download and install the latest version of the Hangouts plugin.

Allow camera & microphone access

1. Open hangouts.google.com.
2. Click Video call . A message will appear at the top of the video call window.
3. Click Allow. You only need to do this once. You can allow to use:
 Recording : The video call is using your camera and microphone.

 Video camera : The video call is using your camera and microphone.

Change setting to allow access

If you aren’t asked to allow access or if you blocked access before, you can change your settings.

1. Open hangouts.google.com.
2. Click Video call .
3. In the top right, click Camera error .
4. Click Always allow https://hangouts.google.com to access your camera and microphone.
5. Click Done. The video call will automatically connect. If you don't see the call refresh, exit
and re-enter the call.

Safari
Step 1: Install the Hangouts plugin

1. Open the Hangouts plugin page.


2. Click Download Plugin.
3. Open and install the plugin.

Step 2: Allow camera & microphone access

1. Open hangouts.google.com.
2. Click Video call Trust.
3. Reload the video call window.

Change a setting to allow trust

If you don't see the Trust option or you’ve canceled this option before, you can change your settings.

1. In Safari, click Preferences.


2. Open Security Plug-in Settings.
3. Find the Hangouts plugin. You might see “Google Talk Plugin and Google Talk Plugin Video
Renderer.”
4. Choose On.

Start a video call


1. Open hangouts.google.com or on the sidebar in Gmail.
2. Select a person from the Hangouts list or search for their name or email address. When you
find the person you want, click their name. You can also check multiple people to start a
group video call.
3. Click Video call .
4. When you're done, click End call .

Other settings for video calls

Add people by name or email address

Anyone in a video call can add more people after the video call starts. Anyone invited to join the
video call must have a Google Account.

1. In the video call window, click the screen.


2. At the top, click Add people .
3. Type someone's name or email address.
4. Click Invite.

Add people by sharing a link

1. In the video call window, click the screen.


2. At the top, click Add people Copy link to share .
3. To invite people to the call, click the link to copy it. Then, paste the link into emails, chats, or
somewhere else. To join a call, users will need to sign in. Anyone with the link will be able to
join the call.

Change video call options


You can change your video call options during the video call. To see your options, click the screen.

 Turn off camera or mute microphone: Click the icons to turn off your camera or mute your
microphone.
 Settings: At the top, click Settings . You can change settings like your camera,
microphone and speaker devices.
 Share screen: To share your screen with other people in the video call, click
More Share screen.
 Fullscreen: To make the video call take up your entire screen, click More Fullscreen.

Send and receive messages in the video call


You can send messages to people in the video call. Messages will appear for a short period.

1. Click the video call screen


2. At the bottom, click Chat .

You can only see the message history while you’re in the call. If you leave and rejoin the call, you
will not see the previous messages.

Start a video call


1. Open the Hangouts app .
2. At the bottom right, tap Compose .
3. Tap New Video Call.
4. Type and select the names of people you want to invite to your video call.
5. Tap Video call .
6. When you're done, tap End call .

Add people by name or email address

Anyone in a video call can add more people after the video call starts.

1. In the video call window, tap the screen.


2. At the top, tap More Invite Add people.
3. Enter or select a name or email address.
4. Tap Video call . To join a video call, you need to sign in to your Google Account.

Turn off your camera or mute the microphone

1. Tap the video call screen


2. At the bottom, tap an icon to mute your microphone or turn off your camera.

Receive messages in the video call


When you receive messages in the video call, a chat icon will appear on the bottom left of your
screen. Tap the icon to see the messages, tap again to close the chat. You can only see the
message history while you’re in the call.

You can’t respond to a video call message on your phone, but you can respond to the message if
you join the call on your computer instead.

Make a phone call with Hangouts

You can use Hangouts to call international and domestic phone numbers.

Computer

Before you start


Note: You cannot place or receive emergency service calls in Hangouts.

 Check the system requirements for Hangouts.


 Connect a microphone and speakers, and make sure they have the latest software.
 Almost all calls to the U.S. and Canada are free from all countries where Hangouts calling is
available. A few U.S. and Canadian destinations will cost 1 cent per minute (USD), or
the listed rate for your local currency. Calls to destinations outside of the U.S. are at low
rates, but calling isn’t available to all locations.
 To receive phone calls, text messages, and voicemails in Hangouts, you need to set
up Google Voice or a Project Fi account, which are currently only available in the U.S.

 Internet Explorer & Safari browsers: Download and install the latest version of the Hangouts
plugin. Currently, some versions of Firefox can't be used to make video calls. Learn why and
how you can continue to make video calls.
 Make sure you allow Hangouts to use your microphone.

Make a phone call


If you use Hangouts to make a phone call with a Google Voice account, it will show your Google
Voice number.

1. On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.


2. Click the Call tab .
 In the search box, type a phone number or name. To enter an international country
code, click the menu or type it into the search box (for example, +55 for Brazil).
 Click the phone number or person's name that you want to call.
 To enter an extension, click the Dialpad .
3. To end a call, close the Hangout window, or click End call . The call will also end if you
run out of calling credit.

See your call history


1. On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.
2. Click the Phone tab .
3. Click New conversation Add credit .
4. Your call history will show up in Google Voice.

Get a refund
If you believe someone else used your Google Account to buy calling credit, learn how to report the
unauthorized charges.

Before you start


 Download the app:
 Download the Hangouts Dialer.
 Download the latest version of the Hangouts app.
 Check your phone: You need to have Android 4.1 or higher. Learn how to check your
Android version.

 Find out about data rates: If you use your data connection (and your phone’s data plan) to
make a phone call, ask your service provider for details about costs.
 See availability: Learn more about where calling is available.
 Get a Google Account: Sign up for a Google account, if you don't already have one.

Make a phone call


You can’t make Hangouts your default calling app, but you can choose the Hangouts Dialer when
you call someone from a website or app.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts Dialer app .


2. Type the person's name or phone number, and select them from the search results. To dial a
number, at the bottom, tap Dialpad .
3. Tap Call .

Show your Google Voice, Project Fi, or verified phone


number
When you make a call in Hangouts, your Google Voice, Project Fi, or verified phone number will
show as the outbound caller ID. Learn how to verify your phone number.

Turn on outbound caller ID

If you don't have a Google Voice or Project Fi number or don't turn on outbound caller ID, your calls
will show as "unknown" to people you call.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts Dialer app .


2. Tap Menu Settings.
3. Select your Google Account.
4. Check Outbound Caller ID.

Show your verified phone number to people you call

1. Follow the steps above to turn on outbound caller ID.


2. Verify and install your phone’s SIM card. If there are errors, your carrier can help register
your SIM with your device.
3. Hangouts will re-verify your SIM from time to time, and may ask to verify your phone number.

See your call history


To see your call history, tap the Dialer tab .

You’ll see people who called your Google Voice (if the person's name is in your phone or Hangouts
contacts).

Delete recent call history

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts Dialer app .

2. Tap Clear recent Clear.

Buy calling credit


1. On your phone or tablet, open the Hangouts Dialer app .
2. At the top right, tap Add .
3. In the new window, under “Add calling credit," tap $10.
4. Complete your credit purchase with your Google Account. You can see your balance at the
top of the Hangouts Dialer app.

If your call doesn't work:


 The country may not support Hangouts calling. Learn where Hangouts calling isn’t available.
 Check if you have strong Internet connection (or at least 3G data).
 Make sure that you have enough credit in your account.
 If you're outside the US, use "+" and the country code when dialing or texting your contacts
and phone numbers (even if it's local to your home or to where you're traveling).

Start a group conversation

You can use Hangouts to talk with more than one person at the same time.

 Conversations can include up to 150 people.


 Video calls can include up to 10 (Gmail, G Suite Basic) or 25 (Business, Education) people.

Everyone who wants to join a group conversation must use Hangouts.

Computer

1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. Click New conversation New group.
3. Enter or select the names, phone numbers, or email addresses of people you want to add.
4. To start a group conversation or video call, click Message or Video call.

Add or remove people


Add people to the conversation
1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.
2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top right of the chat box, click Settings .
4. Check "Joining by link.” Everyone in the group will see that you turned on joining by link.
5. Click Copy link.

6. Share the link with the person you want to add.
 Anyone can join the group using the link.
 Everyone in the group will see when someone joins.
 Everyone will also be able to see the conversation history.
7. To turn off sharing using a link, uncheck "Joining by link.” If someone turns sharing by link
back on, all previously shared links will work again.

Add by name, number, or email

1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. Select a group conversation.
3. Click People Add People.
4. Enter the names, phone numbers, or email addresses of people you want to add.
5. Check the names and click Add people. They will be immediately added to the group.
Everyone in the group will see people who are added.

Remove people from a conversation


You can remove someone from a group if you:

 Started the group


 Were added by name, phone number, or email address.

When someone is removed from a group, they won't be able to see past or future messages in the
conversation.

1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. Select a group conversation.
3. Click People .
4. Find the person you want to remove. On their name, click Remove .
5. They will be immediately removed from the group. Everyone in the group will see that you
removed the person.
6. To add someone back into a group, add them by name, phone number, or email. People
who’ve been removed from a group won't be able to rejoin using a link.

Other options
Name your group conversation

1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top of the chat box, click Settings .
4. In "Hangout Name,” enter a name.
5. Click Ok. Everyone in the conversation can see the name of the group.

See who is in your group conversation

1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. Select a group conversation.
3. Click People .

4. You'll see a list of the people in the group conversation. Everyone in the group can see who
else is in the group.

Leave a group conversation

1. Go to hangouts.google.com or open Hangouts in Gmail.


2. Select the group conversation that you want to leave.
3. At the top right of the chat box, click Settings .
4. Click Leave conversation Leave.
5. To rejoin, someone must invite you to the group. After you rejoin, you’ll be able to see the
conversation history, even messages sent after you left.

When you leave a group conversation, a few things will happen:

 You won’t receive new messages or video calls.


 You won’t see previous messages that were sent.
 Other people in the conversation can still see previous messages that were sent, including
messages you sent.

To close the window without leaving the group, click Close .

1. Open the Hangouts app .


2. At the bottom, tap Add New conversation New group.
3. Enter and select the names, phone numbers, or email addresses of people in your group.
4. Tap Done .

Add people to the conversation
Send an invitation link

1. Open the Hangouts app .


2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top, tap More People.
4. Tap Joining by link. Everyone in the group will see that you've turned on joining by link.
5. To add people by sharing a link, tap Share link. Anyone in the group can share the link.
Anyone can join the group using the link.
1. When they join, everyone in the group will see that the person has joined.
2. They will also be able to see the conversation history.
6. To turn off, tap Joining by link. If someone turns it back on, all previously shared links will
work again.

Add someone by name, number, or email

1. Open the Hangouts app .


2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top, tap More People Add People .

4. Enter a name, phone number, or email address.
5. Tap Done .

Remove people from a conversation


You can only remove someone from a group if you:

 Started the group


 Were added by name, phone number, or email address.

When someone is removed from a group, they won't be able to see past or future messages in the
conversation.

1. Open the Hangouts app .


2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top, tap More People.
4. Tap the person’s name Remove from group.
5. To confirm, tap Remove.

When you remove someone:

 They will be immediately removed from the group.


 Everyone in the group will see that you removed the person.
 You can reinvite them by name, number, or email. People who’ve been removed from a
group won't be able to rejoin using a link.

Other options
Name your group conversation
1. Open the Hangouts app .
2. Select a group conversation or start a new one.
3. At the top, tap More Options Conversation name.
4. Enter a name for your conversation. Everyone in the group can see the name.
5. Tap Save.

See who is in your group conversation

1. Open the Hangouts app .


2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top, tap More People.
4. Everyone under "People in this conversation," is in the group. Anyone on the list can see
who else is in the group.

Leave a group conversation

1. Open the Hangouts app .

2. Select a group conversation.
3. At the top, tap More Options Leave conversation Leave.

When you leave a group conversation:

 You won’t receive new messages or video calls.


 You won’t see previous messages that were sent.
 You won’t be able to rejoin the conversation unless someone invites you. After you rejoin,
you’ll be able to see the conversation history, even messages sent after you left.
 Messages you sent will still be visible to other people in the conversation.

Verify your phone number in Hangouts

When you verify your phone number, people who have your phone number can contact you through
Hangouts.

What happens after you verify your phone number


 People with your phone number can find and contact you, or see personal
contact information you've made available through Google services, like Hangouts and caller
ID. Learn more about caller ID.
 This won’t make your phone number visible to others. To change, visit About me.

If you don't want people finding your personal information on Google, you can turn off that
setting. Learn more about what happens if people find your personal information on Google and how
to turn it off.

Android iPhone & iPad

Verify your phone number


Verify your phone number when you first sign in

1. When you sign in to Hangouts for the first time, you’ll be asked to verify your phone number.
To edit your phone number, tap the number.
2. Confirm the number and tap Next.
3. Enter the verification code you receive in a text message.
4. Tap Next.
5. After you see the "Verified" message, tap Done.

Verify your phone number when you’re already signed in

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .


2. Tap Menu Settings.
3. Select your Google Account.

4. Tap Verify phone number.

Remove your verified phone number

1. Make sure you're signed in to your Google Account.


2. On your phone’s web browser, open your Google Account's phone settings.
3. Tap Edit .
4. Select Remove number Remove number.
