In 1812, the first group of Chinese immigrants arrived in Brazil. They came to cultivate tea to
supply the European market specially the English one. The men were brought from China and started
to work in Rio’s Botanical Garden.
Years later, in 1844, there was another influx of Chinese immigrants to Rio, this time to plant
rice. The plantation wasn’t successful. Then, the Chinese labor force was redirected to the construction
of a road connecting the Botanical Garden to a district called Alto da Boa Vista. This fact explains the
construction of the Chinese View that borders the historic road. Such a famous area is visited for
thousands of tourists every year and it is inside the world’s largest urban rainforest called Tijuca.
In 2012, it was celebrated 200 years of Chinese contribution to everyday Brazilian culture. It
includes Chinese cuisine, methods of traditional Chinese medicine as acupuncture, martial arts,
firework, the Chinese horoscope and much more.

The envelope
After the man had locked the door and closed the windows, he turned on the gas. Then he lay
on his bed to wait for the effects. As he lay on the bed, his hand touched something. It was an
envelope. He began to open it but his eyes closed and very soon he fell asleep.
And he had a dream. He dreamed that he had received an envelope containing a check for an
amount enough to pay all his debts and still be a rich man. After that pleasant dream he slept
peacefully all night.
Next morning the children in the street started making a loud noise, so he woke up. He
evidently had not died yet. He felt his pulse. It was normal. He felt his heart. It was still beating! Then
he saw the envelope. He remembered his dream and eagerly opened the envelope. There wasn’t any
check inside. Instead he found a letter informing him that as he had not paid his gas bill, the company
had cut off his gas!
