ELIGIBILITY AND REGISTRATION

1. The Tri-Sci-Math competition is open to all bona fide high school and college students.
2. Registration will start on November 11, 2019 and is allowed until 8:00 AM of November 13, 2019.
There will be a registration fee of two hundred pesos (Php. 200.00) per team (composed of three
members).
3. All registered participants are expected to be at the venue by 8:00 AM for verification of their
eligibility. Contestants must bring their COR or any proof that they are enrolled.

GENERAL RULES
1. The program will officially start at 8:30 AM on November 13, 2019. Prior to this, the contestants
will have a briefing together with the Tri-Sci-Math Committee regarding the rules and mechanics.
The contest rules shall be read before the contest proper for the benefit of the audience.
2. Each contestant can only bring their own pens. Calculators are not allowed.
3. The Quiz will be of two (2) parts—a written phase and an oral phase. Questions will come from
Science Domain (General Science, Earth Science, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics),
Mathematics Domain (Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Statistics), and Trivia or General
Knowledge domain.
4. Any participating team with a member who fails to appear on-stage before the start of the written
phase shall automatically be forfeited.
5. The board of judges will be composed of resident members from the faculty of Department of
Chemical Engineering and BUChE Quizzer’s Guild of the Bicol University. The judges’ decisions
regarding all protests that may be raised during the Quiz shall be final.

CONTEST MECHANICS
1. Written Phase
a. Each participant shall be given a 50-item questionnaire. The answers should be written in
the space provided on the left side of each number. For multiple-choice type questions,
the letter of choice (in capital) corresponding to an answer should be written instead. If
the answer is not in the choices, the correct answer can be written in the space provided.
Pencils and friction pens are not allowed in writing the final answer.
b. All members from each team will answer individually. Coaching is prohibited during the
written phase and violation of this will lead to the disqualification of the participating
team.
c. The top 12 teams with the highest summation of scores will qualify for the next round
provided that each member scored above a designated minimum score. A team can no
longer proceed with the competition if a member got a result below the threshold score
even if another member or the team scored the highest.

2. Oral Phase
2.1. Reading and Answering Mechanics
1. Each team shall be given a copy of the question before the Quiz Master starts reading the
question. The participants are allowed to answer while the question is still being read.
2. Each team will write on the answer sheets provided. The first team to press the buzzer and present
the correct answer will be awarded a point. The buzzer can only be pressed if the team has already
finished writing.
3. Rounding-off of calculated values should be done in the final answers only; free-floating decimals
should be kept during the preliminary calculations. The number of significant figures or decimal
places in the final answer will be stated in the question. All answers should have appropriate units.
4. If the required answer is a word or a phrase, correct spelling including capitalization and
punctuation will be strictly checked. Abbreviations and acronyms shall not be accepted unless
otherwise stated.
5. In case the first team to sound the buzzer presented an incorrect answer, another team may
STEAL. The Quiz Master will repeat the question once but only the remaining teams are allowed
to answer the same question. After 3 consecutive teams presented an incorrect answer, no point
is awarded and the Quiz Master will proceed to the next question. Questions answerable by True
or False will NOT follow the steal system. The Quiz Master will automatically proceed to the
reading of the next question if the first team failed to deliver the correct answer.
6. In case no team made an attempt to answer the question or no team got it correctly, the Quiz
Master will proceed to the reading of the answer and no points will be awarded to any of the
teams.
7. If an answer to a question is displayed prematurely, the question in consideration will be
invalidated and the Tri-Sci-Math committee shall replace the question with a new one under the
same domain.
8. Coaching from the audience or other teams will result in invalidation of the given question.
9. Cheating, in any form, will result in the automatic disqualification of the team.

2.2. Round Mechanics

The oral phase is composed of three (3) rounds—the Easy, Average, and Difficult round.

a. Easy Round:
i. Top twelve (12) scoring teams (quarter-finalists) of the written phase will be
grouped into three (3), randomly. Each group will be composed of four teams
who will battle with each other one group at a time.
ii. There will be a total of 10 questions per group, each group receiving a different
set. Every correct answer made by the team will be awarded with points.
iii. At the end of the round, the scores of the team will be ranked regardless of the
group they are in. The top eight (8) performing teams (semi-finalists) shall qualify
for the next round.

b. Average Round:
i. The eight (8) qualifying teams from the Average round will be grouped into two
(2), randomly. Each group will still be composed of four teams who will battle
with each other one group at a time. The scores incurred by the qualifying teams
during the previous round will be reset.
ii. There will be a total of 10 questions per group, each group receiving a different
set. Every correct answer made by the team is awarded with points.
iii. At the end of the round, the scores of the team will be ranked regardless of the
group they are in. The top four (4) performing teams (grand finalists) shall qualify
for the next round.

c. Difficult Round:
i. The four (4) qualifying teams (grand finalists) from the Average round will
compete for the different wizarding titles. The scores incurred by the teams in
the previous round will be reset.
ii. A total of 15 questions will be given to the grand finalists. Questions answered
correctly will grant points for the team.
iii. At the end of the round, the scores will be ranked accordingly. The highest scoring
team will be awarded the title Grand Master Wizards, the second highest scoring
team will be awarded the title Great Wizards and the third highest scoring team
will be recognized as Wizards.

PROTEST MECHANICS
1. Only the team captain for a team may file a protest regarding a particular question. The captain
shall raise their hand and wait for the quiz master to acknowledge him/her.
2. The judges shall deliberate on all protests. Their decision shall be final and irrevocable.
3. Protests about preceding questions are no longer allowed once the next question is read by the
Quiz Master.

TIE-BREAKING MECHANICS
1. In case of a tie, a clincher round will immediately ensue and will be of sudden death in nature.

2. The first team to press the buzzer and present a correct answer will automatically qualify to the
next round.

3. Other teams are NOT allowed to "STEAL" a clincher question. If the first team to press the buzzer
presented an incorrect answer, the Quiz Master will proceed to the next question until one team
gains advantage over the other.

WINNERS
Three teams (finalists) with the highest scores shall be declared as Grand Master Wizards, Great
Wizards and Wizards. The winning teams will receive a cash prize of 3,000 pesos; 2,000 pesos and 1,000
pesos, respectively. There will also be a consolation prize of 500 pesos for the grand finalist.
