Ref. Abstraction field Explanation

Article information
1a Ref. ID As assigned by Reference Manager
1b Author(s) All authors
1c Publication year (e.g. 2010)
1d Journal title Full name preferred, abbreviate is acceptable
1e Title Title of article
About the Study

2a Study design Note that for the most part all will be RCT. However, some might include an
additional component or refer to itself as ‘RCT pilot’.

2b Focus/goal of study An overview of what the study is about (usually found at the end of the
introduction section, may also be in abstract).
2c Outcome(s) of study This is the primary and other outcomes of the intervention (i.e. dependent
variable/what the treatment is influencing) (e.g. walking). A dependent variable
is what you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the
experiment.
2d Measures This is how you measure the dependent variable (e.g. the test, tool or scale used
to measure (e.g. 6 minute walk test)
Note that we are primarily interested in the outcomes, but they are sometimes
not reported in a detailed way, so it may be easier for you to cut and paste
measures.
2e # of participants in the study Total number of all participants in the randomized arms.

2f # in intervention group Number of participants in main intervention arm (if no ‘main’ arm chose the
group with the strongest interventions)
2g # of participants in control group Number of participants in main intervention arm (if there is not clear control
arm, include the group with the most minimalistic intervention)
2h # in other arm(s) (optional) If more than two groups, include all information here.
(e.g. 17, 15)
If there is a non-randomized arm it can be included here, but provide a note
about this in a bracket in the same column
About the Intervention

3a Type of rehabilitation intervention Indicate the type of intervention. Response options:

Clinical intervention: patient treatment
Test/Dx tool/assessment: help in understanding how to treat etc.
Family/caregiver: targeted a family or caregiver (e.g. education or support)
Staff: targeted to staff/care team (e.g. training)
Structural/policy/system: structural or system level interventions (e.g. case flow,
articles that look the stroke unit as the intervention, interventions to do with
patient care that aren’t delivered by clinicians))
Other: anything that doesn’t seem to fit in above categories

3b Description of intervention A detailed description of the intervention(s). Include info on what each of the
groups receives (intervention and control) as well as what they both received
(e.g. both groups also received 1 hour of PT a day)
3c Setting Description of setting.
Note the difference between inpatient with transition (where the same patients
are in multiple settings) vs inpatient + other (please specify), where two
different patient groups are included in the study.
3d Locations If stated within the article, write as ‘city, country’ (or whatever level of info is
available. If information is not indicated write ‘not indicate/country’ and include
the country of the primary author or other information from affiliations etc.
About Study Participants

4a Type of Stroke If no information on type is (i.e. article just says “stoke”) write N/I.
Response options: Ischemic, hemorrhagic, both, N/I
4b Severity of stroke Level of severity as indicated by the authors (not based on our interpretation of
test scores) If severity level is not explicitly stated, we write ‘N/I’.
Response options: mild, moderate, severe, mild- moderate, moderate-severe,
not indicated
4c Time post stroke: average Report as one number for all participants if possible, if not report by
intervention and control groups.
Indicate units
Report median if mean not available (indicate in brackets that it is median)
4d Time post stroke: SD/IQR Report as one number for all participants if possible, if not report by
intervention and control groups.
If median is reported, then this will be interquartile range.
If no average is reported (N/I for 4c) report the range here, indicate range in
brackets.
4e Age: average Report as one number for all participants if possible, if not report by
intervention and control groups.
Report median if mean not available (indicate in brackets that it is median)
4f Age: SD/IQR Report as one number for all participants if possible, if not report by
intervention and control groups.
If median is reported, then this will be interquartile range.
If no average is reported (N/I for 4e) report the range here, indicate range in
brackets.
4g # of males Report on the number of males
If they report percentages, convert to number of males (%*total number in
study/100)
4h # of females Report on the number of females
If they report percentages, convert to number of females (%*total number in
study/100)
About Multimorbidity and Exclusions

5a Inclusion/exclusion criteria re: List all possible medical/morbidity conditions for exclusion.
multimorbidity/medical condition Whether based on Charlson Comorbidity Index, or other diseases/condition
(e.g. based on Charlson excluded.
Comorbidity Index, or other Inclusion criteria should appear in brackets e.g. [Inclusion: stroke patients with
diseases/condition excluded) sleep apnea]
5b Inclusion/Exclusion criteria general Cut and paste inclusion/enrolment and exclusion criteria provided in the
articles
5c Explicitly included 1= study include participants with a particular condition/morbidity (that is not a
result of the stroke e.g. hemiplegia would not classify) (e.g. stroke + CPD as
inclusion criteria
5d Not explicitly excluded 1= No information about morbidity related exclusion criteria provides
5e Excludes patient with generally 1= Excludes patient with generally poor cognitive ability (e.g. as part of the
poor cognitive ability research process, e.g. cognitive ability to consent) Excludes patients with
generally poor and sever cognitive disorder if the conditions are not named.
Note: if counted here, do not count as part of 5f (unless there in an additional
condition)
5f Explicitly excludes patient based on 1 = Excludes patients based on age *beyond criteria of ≥18
age
5g Explicitly excludes patient with 1= Excludes patients that have had a previous stroke (i.e. include only patients
prior stroke with suffering from first stroke)
5h Explicitly excludes Charlson 1 = Explicitly excludes patients that have one or more conditions listed within
diseases/condition Charlson Index
5i Explicitly excludes other 1 = Excludes patients with morbidities not part of the Charlson Index
diseases/condition (if description in general e.g. ‘ sever cardiovascular disease’ that would fall
under this category)
5j Additional Information re: To be used at the discretion of reviewers
multimorbidity
Additional Notes
6a Notes: To be used at the discretion of reviewers
6b Flag as for second abstraction
under different study design (e.g.
one study arm without control)
6c Flag of exclusion (i.e. if you think Flag if you the article should be included in the analysis
the article shouldn't have passed
screening)
