Hafiz is a new student. Today is his new day at campus. He is meeting his classmate. Pay
attention on his conversation with his new friend.
Hafiz : Assalamu’alaikum. My name is Hafiz. What’s your name?
Alif : Wa’alakumussalam. Hi, Hafiz. My name is Alif. It’s nice to meet you. Where
do you come from?
Hafiz : I come from Medan, North Sumatra. I speak Bataknese. What about you?
Are you Javanese?
Alif : Yes, you’re right. I’m from Yogyakarta, but I was born in Surabaya.
Hafiz : By the way, do you have any brother or sister?
Alif : Oh yes, I have three brothers and two sisters. They are all married. My
three brothers are teachers. They teach in Islamic school in Jakarta. My two
sisters are housewives. They live with their husbands in Surabaya.
Hafiz : MasyaAllah, you have such a big family!
Alif : Yes, Alhamdulillah. Now, it’s your turn! Tell me about your family. Have you
got any brothers or sisters?
Hafiz : I have got only one brother and one sister. My brother is married. He is an
architect. He works in a company in Bandung where he lives with her wife
and my two cute nieces. My sister, Rina, is only one year above me. We go to
the same university.
Alif : Cool. It’s very nice to know you, Hafiz. Hopefully, we can be a good friend.
Hafiz ; Aamiin. It’s also nice meeting you, Alif.

My Day

Hi! My name is Rahma Syafira. Most people call me Rahma. I live in Yogyakarta with
my family. This is my daily routine on weekdays. I usually get up at half past four. After doing
my prayer, I spend some minutes to recite Al-Qur’an. At six o’clock I go to the kitchen to
help my mother preparing our breakfast. I frequently have breakfast with my parents and
my younger sister Zahra at half past six before doing our daily activities. I like cereals but my
sister like fried rice very much. My parents eat chicken-porridge. We go to campus by bus,
but my father goes to his office by train. My mother works at home, she is a fashion
designer.
We have lunch at campus, because in the afternoon we do activities: I go to a
knitting class, and my sister goes to a web design class. We usually go home at four in the
afternoon. When we get home, we help our mother to clean our rooms and wash the
dishes. In the evening, we usually learn to recite Al-Qur’an from a good scholar in a mosque
near my house. Our father would love to drop off and pick us there every night. My sister
and I go to bed at ten o’clock.
In the weekends, our father usually invites us to visit our grandparent in Solo. We
go there by train. It takes only 50 minutes. In my grandparent’s house, we like feeding the
chickens and cows. It’s great fun.

B. CONVERSATION
Ali is on the third semester of psychology department. He is talking to his friend Ahmad from
nursing school in the cafeteria about their hobbies. Study their conversation and practice with your
partner.
Ali : Ahmad, do you like swimming?
Ahmad : Yes, sure. I can swim well.
Ali : You do?
Ahmad : Uh uh, Alhamdulillah, my father is a good swimmer. He likes to teach me
swim whenever he has free times. Anyway, why do ask me that? Do like
swimming as well?
Ali : Hmm… I read on the article that swimming can improve your health in a
variety of ways; like decreasing your risk for heart disease, helping you lose
weight and maintaining strength and flexibility.
Ahmad : Oh… Really? I even don’t know that.
Ali : Hold on. The article also says that many people find themselves free from
stress and worry after a good swimming session.
Ahmad : MasyaAllah. I have to swim more often then. So, what about you? Do you
swim well?
Ali : That’s the problem, Ahmad. I really want to swim. But, I’m afraid of being
drown.
Ahmad : Chill out, man! I can teach you, and for the beginning, you can swim on
shallow area.
Ali : Cool. It sounds really interesting. So, when will we start the lesson, Mr.
Couch?
Ahmad : C’mon, don’t call me like that, dude! What about tomorrow afternoon? Are
you free?
Ali : I think so. I don’t have any plan for tomorrow.
Ahmad : Nice, I’ll pick you up at four o’clock and we’ll go to the swimming pool near
our campus.
Ali : InsyaAllah, Ahmad. I shall see you tomorrow afternoon.
Ali : Yes, InsyaAllah.

LANGUAGE FOCUS

Simple Present Tense

The simple present expresses daily habits, or usual activities, such as;
a) Ann takes a shower every day.
b) I usually eat lunch at the cafeteria.
The simple present expresses general statements of fact, as in:
c) Babies cry.
d) The earth revolves around the sun.
In sum, the simple present is used for events or situations that exist always, usually, or
habitually in the past, present, and future.

Subject and object Pronoun

A subject pronoun takes the place of a noun as the subject of a sentence. A


sentence’s subject is the person or thing that performs the action of a verb. When you take
an even closer look, you will see that a subject pronoun is used as the subject of a verb.
Meanwhile, an object pronoun is a type of personal pronoun that is normally used
as a grammatical object, either as the direct or indirect object of a verb, or as the object of
a preposition.

Tips on using subject and object pronoun

1) When there are multiple subjects or objects, reduce the sentence to only the
pronoun.
Example:" Muhammad, Sofyan and (I, me) go to the park."
If we remove Steve and Bill, the sentence would be: (I, me) went to the park.
“I went to the park” sounds a lot better than “Me went to the park.”
Answer: “Muhammad, Sofyan and I go to the park.”
2) If you are not sure, turn the sentence around.
Example: "The best player on the team is (he, him)."
Try this: (He, Him) is the best player on the team.
Answer: "He is the best player on the team."
3) Use an object pronoun after a preposition.
Example: "She will give the money to you and (I, me)."
After the preposition "between" we need an object pronoun.
Answer:”She will give the money to you and me."

I Love Gardening

Gardening is my favourite pastime. I like flowers. I remember that I liked flowers


even when I was a little child. When someone gives me flowers, it is the best present for
me. I can look at flowers for a long time, marvelling at their beauty.
We usually spend summers at our summer house in a small village not far from my
hometown. My mother and grandmother grow berries, vegetables and fruit. My father and
I help them to plant the seeds, to weed the garden, to water the plants, and to gather the
crop. We usually have a good crop of strawberries, black currants, raspberries, cucumbers,
and tomatoes. My younger brother and I eat a lot of fresh berries in summer, and my
parents also make strawberry jam and freeze berries for winter.
I have my own garden plot where I grow my favourite flowers. Daffodils and tulips
are the first flowers that appear in my little garden in spring. Their bright colours make
them an unforgettable sight! There are also asters, chrysanthemums and snapdragon in my
little garden. And I plant daisies along the paths. They grow very well. I also prepare for a
small flowerbed for roses. Roses are very beautiful, but they are not easy to grow.
I read an interesting book on gardening. The book is full of helpful tips on growing
flowers in our climate. I hope to have nice roses next summer. During autumn and winter I
grow flowers and other decorative plants in flowerpots on the windowsills in our flat. My
eyes really rest when I look at various shades of green on my windowsill.

Maryam : Assalaamu’alaikum. Hi Nur, how are you doing? This time, I would
like to tell you about my house. There are many things in my
house. There is a clock, a bathroom, a kitchen, a living room and
there are some sofas. I also have a lovely bedroom.

Helping at a hospital
Every year many young people finish school and then take a year off before they

Carnivorous Plants
Carnivorous plants, such as the sundew and the Venus flytrap, are generally found

to obtain the necessary nitrogen from the insects. These plants trap the insects in a variety of
ways. The sundew has sticky hairs on its leaves, when an insect is landing on these leaves, it
is getting caught up in the sticky hairs, and the leaf is wrapping itself around the insect. The
leaves of the Venus flytrap function more like a trap, snapping suddenly and forcefully shut
around as insect.

SUPERLATIVE

Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit
of a quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest). They are used in sentences where
a subject is compared to a group of objects.

 One syllable adjectives

Add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative. If the adjective has a consonant +
single vowel + consonant spelling, the final consonant must be doubled before adding the
ending.

Farida has just returned from her holiday. She met Tiara and she shared her experience to

Farida : Assalaamu’alaikum. How are you Tiara? I heard that you just
returned from your vacation. How was it?
Tiara : Wa’alaaikumsalam. I am fine Farida. Yes, it is true, I have just
returned from Lombok last week. It was a wonderful holiday
that I have ever had.
Farida : Wow, I am so glad to hear that. What places did you visit in
Lombok?
Tiara : I visited Senggigi beach on my second day. I had many fun
activities at there. I swam and also dived at the beach. The
scenery under the sea was so amazing.
Farida : Did you visit other places in Lombok?
Tiara : Yes, I did. I also visited a tourist village at Lombok. People who
live there are so friendly to tourists. They introduced tourist

Farida : Wow, you are so lucky Farida for having such a wonderful

My Unforgettable Trip

I still remember my first vacation when I lived in Georgia. It was on the warmth of a
summer day in July, 2009. After finishing the spring semester at high school, my cousins
and I had two months to rest, relax and go somewhere. A beach trip in the summer was
always a good idea for us who lived far away from the sea. Hence, my cousins and I made a
plan to go to Walton Beach in Florida on the Fourth of July. The trip was such an
unforgettable vacation for me with many different emotions such as happiness because I
was so interested in the beauty of nature. Sometimes, when I recall, everything seemed to
have just happened yesterday.

The trip was very special and brought many deep impressions on my memory. Honestly, I
felt so wonderful and enjoyed my days in Walton Beach. Although I missed the scene of
the setting sun and did not really have any bathing beach, I saw the dawn on the beach in
the early morning. I was satisfied with everything I spent on it. Furthermore, on this
vacation, I was aware of how fear I was when I reached nearly to the dead. It was such an
extremely important experience for me to protect myself. Perhaps, I will learn how to
swim; not only do I keep myself in safety, but also can I help others.
