The control panel has the following functions.

1) Automatic engine starting
2) Monitoring of engine faults.
3) Automatic charging of starting batteries.
4) Engine oil preheat system.
AUTOMATIC STARTING
The engine-driven pump starts automatically when an electric contact (pressure switch, pushbutton, thermostat
etc.) is momentarily closed. The control device makes up to 6 attempts to start the engine. Each attempt lasts
a total of 20 seconds (15 sec starting, 5 sec pause). Between crank periods, the device switches from one
starting battery to the other. Should one of the batteries have a fault, the device will conduct all future attem-
pted starts from the working battery.
The number of attempts and their duration are easily adjusted.
The device detects "motor start" by checking the voltage generated by the engine's alternator and pressure of
the lubricating oil.
There is a three-position key selector on the front of the control panel:
- OFF
- MANUAL The engine starts straight away
- AUTOMATIC The engine stands by for start
The key can be removed from the selector only when it is set to "AUTOMATIC".
The engine is stopped by pressing the relevant pushbutton on the control panel.
In the unlikely event of the control board failing totally, the engine can be started using the manual emergency
control, which consists in two pushbuttons (protected by a clear cover), one for each battery.
ENGINE MONITORING
The device starts checking the engine approx. 10 seconds after it has been started to give it time to recover
from any fluctuations in oil pressure and alternator voltage.
Any faults (low oil pressure, no alternator voltage or relevant belt breakage, high water or oil temperature) trip
an auxiliary alarm contact, which may operate a siren or warning light. WARNING: the engine is not stopped
automatically, and must instead be stopped manually at all times in accordance with UNI 9490 standards. It is
thought that there is a greater risk of false alarms and relevant untimely stopping of the engine-driven pump
than the risk of running the engine in hazardous conditions.
The panel also indicates:
Battery fault
Low fuel level
Mains failure.
BATTERY CHARGING
There are two independent charge systems, one for each starting battery, complete with relevant meters (vol-
tmeter and ammeter).
The battery charger performs an initial quick charge, 6 A, and then switches automatically to charge mainte-
nance mode when the battery reaches a suitable voltage.
If the battery is faulty, current is cut off and the fault warning light comes on.
The front panel of the engine-driven pump's starting device features doubles of the warning lights found on the
battery charger:

ENGINE OIL PREHEAT SYSTEM

The engine-driven pump must give full performance on startup. To avoid possible damage to the engine, oil is
kept heated by immersion heating elements fitted in the crankcase.
Engines up to 10 HP are fitted with one or two heating elements supplied at 24V with an appropriate transfor-
mer. For more powerful engines, an external unit with suitable power is fitted touching the crankcase and sup-
plied at 220V. On application, a preheat system can be installed for the engine's water.
The standard-issue panel comes with a revolution counter with built-in hour meter.
The revolution counter lets you check the duty point of the pump, and hence the head required by the system.
On request, at an extra charge, the panel can be fitted with the following instruments:
Fuel level indicator
Oil pressure gauge
Oil temperature gauge
Water temperature gauge
No-voltage switching contacts are available in the terminal box connecting the panel to indicate:
Pump STOPPED
Pump AUTOMATIC
Pump MANUAL
Pump RUNNING
General alarm
Note that any changes to operating logic, though they might be feasible, must ALWAYS BE AUTHORIZED by
the local Fire Brigade, competent for the district where the firefighting system incorporating the engine-driven
pump is due to be installed.

The control panel has the following functions.

AUTOMATIC STARTING
The electrically driven pump starts automatically when an electric contact (pressure switch, pushbutton, thermo-
stat etc.) is momentarily closed.
The unit is stopped with the relevant pushbutton.
The control panel is mounted in a watertight (IP55) metal cabinet and incorporates an isolating switch and war-
ning lights indicating:
Mains ON
Pump STOPPED
Pump RUNNING
The lights have doubles so that the operator is advised of status even when a light bulb fails.
Panels also feature a voltmeter with switch for checking line voltages and phases, and ammeter to check the
pump motor input power. The ammeter is switched on manually by pressing the relevant pushbutton so that it is
not damaged by overcurrent at startup. Star/delta starting is used to reduce the peak current and corresponding
drops in voltage, which might create problems with the internal distribution networks in facilities, schools, com-
mercial and state buildings.
MOTOR PROTECTION
In accordance with UNI 9490 standards, panels are not fitted with the three-pole thermal cutout to avoid the pos-
sibility of the electrically driven pump being stopped at an inconvenient moment owing to a faulty thermal cutout.
The control panel includes three high-capacity fuses and a device to check:
Mains ON
Presence of three phases
The alarm threshold can be set to decrease the mains voltage at which the device trips (in the range -5% -15%
of rated voltage).
The device sets off a relay that can be connected to various types of alarm, but DOES NOT STOP the electri-
cally driven pump.
No-voltage contacts are available in the terminal box connecting the panel to indicate:
Pump OFF
Pump AUTOMATIC
Pump MANUAL
Pump STOPPED
Pump RUNNING
Mains fault alarm
