Progression)
Intended o Students will be engaged with the content which will help generate questions and discussions which will
Success support their answers during the activity.
Criteria
o After the class discussions and physically touching the cups, students will be able to complete a cut and
paste activity which focuses around the different materials cups are made from and their intended
performance properties.

o To give the students an opportunity to make a judgement about the appropriate use of a selection of
materials for a product.

Activity 1.) Students will physically examine each cup as a whole class. A collaborative brainstorm will be created to
Instructions gather students’ ideas about what materials each cup is made of, what it could be used for, if it is
reusable, what could happen if it was dropped, put through the dishwasher, had boiling water poured into
it or frozen. These brainstorms will then be hung up around the class for students to reference during
the follow up activity.

2.) After the class discussion students will then be given two handouts, one will have photos of the cups we
have just examined and the other is worksheet to go with the images. Each student is required to use
cutting skills to cut out the different cups and glue them onto the worksheet, matching the appropriate
pictures with the statements. In small groups they will work together to identify which cup goes where.
Teacher will assist in reading out the various statements for students who may find reading and
identifying words as a challenge.

3.) Once the worksheets have been completed, each table will have at turn at sharing what picture they
placed with what statement. There may be some cross over with cups fitting into two categories, but this
is ok as it will help to generate discussions amongst the class and have different talking points.

This activity could be modified and used as
science experiment, physically Teacher could get students to design their own
demonstrating each cup being used in a type of cup for a specific purpose and then get
variety of ways. E.g. putting boiling water them to create a prototype which could be made
into a plastic cup, dropping a wooden cup into the proper thing at a later stage.
