In some cases, transitive phrasal verbs can be split and the object of the phrasal
verb can be inserted between the verb and the preposition. This split does not
alter the meaning of the sentence in any way. Using the example above, we can
also say: “Paul hung the telephone up .” Similarly, we can say: “ Turn off the radio
or “ Turn the radio off ”; “I’ll call up Mary” or “I’ll call Mary up ”. Regarding thes
separable phrasal verbs, it is important to note that when we substitute the object
of the phrasal verb with a pronoun, the pronoun always goes between the verb and
the preposition . So, “ Turn off the radio” becomes “ Turn it off ”, and “I’ll call up
Mary” becomes “I’ll call her up ”.
