Introduction:

Students will be provided with materials in order to practice various skills and sub-skills
related to communication in English. The course has been divided into four parts: Reading.
Writing, Grammar and vocabulary.

Course Description:

Fundamental English is an intensive course to assist students to improve their academic


English. This course basically deals with students’ common mistakes in writing. In this
course students learn how to correct their common mistakes through practicing different
types of writing. By using a variety of structures of sentence, tense, voice, narration etc,
students will be able to advance their ability to write clear sentences. As well as, they will
learn how to transform simple sentences to complex and compound forms to improvise their
writing skill. Lessons like picture description will improve their level of understanding, as well
as creativity. Besides, specific lessons will be conducted to improve the students’ reading
skills and their fluency in speaking.

Course Objective:

Writing is a process of learning and practicing. Fundamental English aims at helping


students primarily to write grammatically correct sentences and also practicing free hand
writing. The course materials include elementary/ lower level reading and speaking tasks.
The course sets out to improve the students’ overall performance. The course focuses on:

1. Identifying the common errors in writing and correcting them.


2. Preparing and delivering effective spoken responses.
3. Improving skills in reading and listening.

Learning outcome:

1. Students will develop their reading skill through various reading techniques.
2. Students will practice various types of writing lessons and writing activities to improve
their academic English.
3. Students will also be able to improve their ability to write grammatically correct
sentences.

1st Reading activities: Selected passages


Crafting sentences and grammar:
Parts of speech in brief, Subject-verb-
agreement, Appropriate preposition,
Tense, Picture description, Completing
sentences, Tag questions.

Writing activities: Narrative paragraph


and descriptive paragraph.

2nd Reading activities: Selected passages.


Crafting sentences and grammar:
Sentence transformation, Narration,
Voice, Translation, Vocabulary.
Writing task: Cause and effect
paragraph, comparison and contrast
paragraph

Teaching and Assessment Formats:


The course is designed as one lecture a week. Apart from the term examinations, class
tests, assignments and quizzes at regular intervals throughout the semester form essential
parts of the course.

Mandatory course requirements:


Students must prepare for and attend all formats of assessments. They must achieve an
overall pass mark of 50%.
