My first day in university

When my high school results were out, I was pleased with my results since not only was I

the best student in my school but was ranked among the top ten students in my state. That was a

high academic achievement. Friends, relatives and teachers came to celebrate with me. It is the

dream of any child in my country to pursue education up to the higher level. For one week, I was

in a frenzy mood. A month later, I received a letter to join one of the most reputed universities in

Europe, and guess which was it? None other but the University of Manchester. This was an

achievement that I never even dreamt. It was made possible by the British embassy scholarships

from African countries for students who performed well in academics. I was the talk of the

village. I had been a diehard Manchester united fun and now going to England and taking studies

from an institution adjacent to Manchester United’s stadium Old Trafford was something I could

not imagine ever happening.

I went to the institution with new hopes and aspiration of performing even better and

becoming the best that my state could ever produce. I had challenges trying to identify the

location for our lectures. As a result, I had to ask one student and then another to be sure what

they told me was right. Then one day I came across a young man, he looked confused, and I

decided to ask him what the matter was. I came to realize that we were doing the same course.

He had been admitted late, and everything confused him. Well and that’s how our friendship

with Maxwell started. I gave him class notes so that he would be on the same footing with the

rest of the class.

One day in the hallway I saw an advertisement for an event. I moved closer to get the

details. It was a campus party to induct the freshmen into life on campus. It was an opportunity

that I could not have afforded to miss. I informed Maxwell, and he was excited too. The party

was to be held in the assembly hall. Therefore we had to arrive early to secure a seat. We arrived

early, and within no time, the place was packed to capacity. The music was loud, and the best

band Arctic Monkeys performed too. However, that night was the beginning of my decline.

Maxwell and I started abusing substance from that day. Regrettable he was expelled from school

a semester ago, and we lost contact. It was after his addiction became chronic and could not do

his studies anymore. I also became an addict, and it is heartbreaking knowing the high hopes that

people at home had on me, and maybe they even saw a future leader, and here I am in a foreign

country slowly becoming a junky. But hope is not lost; the students association is helping

students like me become well and perform well academically.

Conclusion

The campus is one of the best places to develop skills and shaping your future. However,

this can only come to realization if only someone sticks and remains focused on the core issue

that brought them there. Many bright students have thrown their bright futures down the drain in

campus, and they have ended up regretting their entire lives.
