They Say, Ch. 9 “Ain’t So/Is Not” Exs. 1 & 2

1. A paragraph from page 68

a. Original paragraph: If good academic writing involves putting yourself

into dialogue with others, it is extremely important that readers be able to

tell at every point when you are expressing your own view and when you

are stating someone else’s. This chapter takes up the problem of moving

from what you say without confusing readers about who is saying what.

b. Informal paragraph: If good writing means putting yourself into a

conversation with buddies, it is important that they are able to see at every

point when you are showing your own view and when you are saying

another person’s view. This chapter shows the problem of moving from

what they say to what you say without creating a blur to the readers about

who is saying what.

c. Informal/formal mix paragraph: If good academic writing includes putting

yourself into a dialogue with others, it is important that readers are able to

tell at every point when you are expressing your own view and when you

are showing someone else’s. This chapter covers the problem of

transitioning from what you say without creating confusion in your writing

to the readers about who is saying what.

2. A paragraph I wrote earlier this year

a. Original: Lyft suggested that Mary was continuing to accept rides because

she was still a week away from her due date and did not believe that she

was going into labor yet. Tolentino suggests that the real reason is that the

gig economy has normalized taking every opportunity to make easy

money possible, even by jeopardizing your own health. They differ

because Lyft’s reasons make it seem like it is a mistake made on her

behalf, but the reason that Tolentino provides shows that the situation was

Lyft’s fault.

b. Altered: Lyft suggested that Mary was still accepting rides because she

was still a week away from having her baby and did not think that she was

going into labor yet. Tolentino suggests that the real reason is that the gig

economy has normalized taking every chance to make a quick buck

possible, even by putting your own health on the line. They differ because

Lyft’s reasons make it seem like it is a mistake made she made, but the

reason that Tolentino gives shows that the situation was Lyft’s fault.
