THE MAN OF LIFE UPRIGHT. 2.
Write the following stanzas with reference to the context.
Stanza No.1:-
Whose guiltless heart is free,
From all dishonest deeds,
Or thoughts of vanity.
Reference These lines have been taken from the poem "The man of life upright" by Thomas
campaign.
CONTEXT: A noble man leads a very perfect and honest life. He is honest and straight forward.
He deals in honest and just way. There is no guilt in his heart. There is not a slightest touch of
vanity in him. He believes in simplicity.
Explanation In this stanza the poet says that a man who leads a contented life in this world has a
heart which is free from sins. He is honest and outspoken. He does not fell proud. He believes
that only honest thoughts will keep him safe. His life is simple and does not like evil things. He
leads a peaceful life.
STANZA NO. 2:-
The man whose silent days ;
In harmless joys are spent
Whom hopes cannot delude ;
Nor sorrow discontent.

Context: A noble man passes a peaceful life with no harms. He believes in honest means and is
satisfied with the simple delights of life. He does not think beyond his means. Thus the hopes
cannot betray him and the sorrows cannot discontent him. He believes in small sorrows and
small joys
Explanation: In these lines the poet says that a man who leads a happy and contented life,
spends his days quietly in this world. He enjoys life without causing any trouble to others. He
does not disturb the happiness of his fellow beings. Useless hopes cannot deceive him and
worldly sorrows do not disturb the mind. He is always happy and leads a contented life.

STANZA NO. 3:-

That man neither towers,
Nor armour for defence ,
Nor secret vaults to fly,
From thunder's violence.

Context: A noble man has no lust of money. He does not dream of palaces. He does not need
any weapon for protection. He does not need underground rooms to take refuge from the troubles
of sky. He has the fear of God and so the has no other fear. He does not believe in protective
measures.
Explanation: In these lines the poet says that a man leading an honest and pious life in this
world lives fearlessly. He is not afraid of anyone. He does not he does not builds high towers to
protect himself from enemies because he has no enmity with anyone. He does not need weapons
to keep himself safe from his enemies; he does not need underground cellars to hide from the
calamities of nature, like thunderstorms. He lives a peaceful life. He believes that God will
protect him from all troubles.

STANZA NO. 4:-

He only can behold;
With unaffrightened eyes
The horrors of the deep;
And the terrors of the skies.

Context: A noble man watches all the changes of the world with his fearless eyes. He is not
afraid of death. He is ready to welcome his end with smiling face. He has a strong faith in God
and thus submits himself to the will of God.
Explanation: In these lines the poet says that an honest man believes that God will protect him
from all troubles. Storms appearing in the sea and thunderstorm appearing in the skies do not
frighten him. He is not afraid of natural calamities; he looks at such things without fear. He faces
the dangers of life boldly.

STANZA NO. 5:-

Thus scorning all the cares,
 The fate or fortune brings,
He makes the heaven his book,
His wisdom heavenly things.

Context: A noble man is spiritually happy. So, he hates all those cares and worries which the
fate or fortune brings. Difficulties and hardships there in the life of an honest man but he does
not care as he believes that these difficulties and hardships will come to an end with the passage
of time
Explanation: In these lines the poet says that the man who has a good character leads a pious
life. He does not care about the worries about the world. He does not believe in faith he does not
complain when he faces the trouble of life. He has firm faith in God. He believes that God will
protect him from all troubles, whenever he faces the problems of the world; he seeks guidance
and help from God.

STANZA NO. 6:-

Good Thoughts his 0nly friends,
His wealth a well spent age,
The earth his sober inn,
And uite pilgrimage
Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem "The man of life upright" by Thomas
campaign.
Context: Here in this stanza the poet stresses moral values and has drawn the attention of the
people to the realities of the world. By the describing the qualities of an honest man he wants to
convince the people that honesty is the best policy and those who are honest and upright have
peace of mind and peace of heart. There is no vacuum in the life an honest man. He has spiritual
pleasure, which is the asset of life.

Explanation: In these lines the poet says that a man of good character leads a calm and quiet life
and does not cause problem for others. He believes that only honest thoughts will protect him
from troubles. He does not care about the worldly comforts because he knows that his stay in this
world is temporary. He therefore lives in this world like a pilgrim. Who has only one aim in life,
which is only to worship God

Summary
The poem The Man of Life Upright,carries profound thoughts and feelings of the poet
Thomas Campion. The poem offers the concept of an ideal personality, leading a highly
disciplined and controlled life. According to the poet, the pure and innocent heart of an upright
man is free from evil ideas and intentions. He passes his life in simple happiness. He has perfect
control over his wishes and emotions. As a result, worldly loss and problems fail to disturb him.
He is confident and brave. He does not count on power or material resources. In a battle he
depends upon God and seeks help from him. He does not have strong forts, weapons of war or
secret cellars for his safety. An upright man faces natural calamities such as stormy winds, heavy
rains and tempest, calmly and courageously. His faith in God remains firm and unshaken.
Further the poet says that an upright man shows complete indifference to the happy and
unhappy events of Life. He is aware of that all wordly things and events are temporary and
worthless. He seeks knowledge from the heavenly books and study of the objects of Nature adds
to his wisdom and refines his intellect.
Campion says that the main of upright life considers the world a place for brief stay. It no
more than an inn,without any glamour or charm. He believes that his good deeds are his only
assets and earning. When called upon by God, he will have to embark on the journey to the next
and eternal world.

Ans) A man of upright is an honest and dignified person. He leads a very profound life and thus is
confined to himself.
II. How can we spend a happy life?
Ans) For spending an happy life we should not involve in worldy affairs such as having a big house
number of cars or servants. A simple or austere life can also bring happiness in our life. An happy life can
be spend by following and then implementing the sunnas of Muhammad (PBUH).
III. How Should we behave at the time of sorrows?
Ans) We should be patient and courageous enough to tackle the sorrows, as patience strengthens us to
move forward in life whereas courage provides us hope to balance the life ahead.
IV. What is the importance of hope in one’s life?
Ans) It is said the hope sustains life. Because it is hope which propels us forward in life and helps us in
getting new opportunities.
V. How can good and sound character help others?
Ans) A Sound and good character influences others with honesty and great personality. A sound
character inspires others with its piousness and truthfulness. And therefore such a person with good
and sound character becomes a role model for others.

Ans) Because playing sports helps us in maintaining our health and always keep us active and fresh.

Ans) Sports play a vital role in keeping us mentally fresh. Sports enable us to think sharply and provide
us strength to face mental disorders.
III. “All work and no play make jack a dull boy”Explain.
Ans) “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, is a proverb which means that it is not good to work
all the time and that people may get bored if they don't get some time off from work.
IV. What are the outcomes of healthy spirit of rivalry and competition?
Ans) Healthy spirit of rivalry provides us encouragement and power so that we may bring improvement
in our performance. This very spirit also enables us to break previous unsurpassed and unexcelled
records.
V. Why do we need healthy body with healthy mind?
Ans) Because both healthy body and healthy mind co-exist. As it is said a healthy mind lives in a healthy
body. If the mind is unsullied and pure then it will greatly help in maintaining physical well being and
health.
VI. How should we react in the wake of defeat and victory?
Ans) Game is the name of victory or defeat. Because these both enable us to face challenges of the
world with positive attitude. As for as their reaction is concerned, We should not take pride in our
victory, whereas at the time of defeat must not lose hope.

Summary of the poem

“Hope is the thing with feathers” is a short ballad about hope and its role in human life.
Here Emily Dickinson introduces hope as “the thing with feathers which perches in the
soul. As with many of her poems, Emily Dickinson takes an abstract feeling or idea. In this
case she likens hope to something physical, visible, and tangible. Singing bird as a symbol of
Hope, sings its wordless tune and never stops singing it, nothing can faze it. In other words
hope does not communicate by ‘speaking’ to us in a conventional sense: it is a feeling that
cheers us even in dark times of despair. Indeed, hope is sweetest of all when the ‘Gale’ is
busy raging: during turbulent or troubled times, but hope is still there for us. And hope can
withstand just about anything: even in times of cold comfort or in foreign or unfamiliar
climes hope remains. And hope never asks for anything from us in return. It provides comfort
and solace but does not require anything back.

decimation at large.in such disastrous situations hope provides great comfort and ease.

Ans) Hope asks nothing from us in return.

 Composition
Paragraph Writing.
1)The Post Man
Postman is a very familiar figure in our
society. He is a low- paid government employee of
the postal department. He puts on a khaki dress. He
carries a leather bag across his shoulders. He
moves from door to door and delivers letters,
parcels, money orders and other postal articles. He
is as regular as a clock. He performs his duties in
all weather fair or foul. He is honest, dutiful and
well-behaved. He is a friend of all and enemy of
none. He lives a very poor life. He can hardly make
both ends meet with his small income. A village
postman leads a more toilsome life than a town
postman. Thus a postman is a very important
person in our society. We cannot think of a
civilized life without the services of a postman. We
should give him due to honor and try to better his
condition.
3) The Farmer.
A farmer is a very important person. He works
all day in the fields, growing crops which we eat.
Farmers are hardworking people. For a farmer, his
land means everything. A farmer’s day begins early
in the morning. They grow crops and sell it in the
market. They also grow fruits and vegetables. They
live in huts and mud houses. The farmer ploughs
his land with a pair of oxen. Some use tractors to
do the work faster. They water their fields
regularly. His family also helps him. When it rains,
the farmers rejoice because rains mean a good
harvest. We must be grateful to the farmers.
5) The Policeman
A Policeman’s life is very hard. He keeps
law and order. He catches the thieves. He chases
the thieves and the robbers. He arrests the gamblers
and pick-pockets. Rain or sunshine, he is always on
duty. He keeps a watch over bad characters and
picks them up when making mischief. A policeman
does many other duties. He controls traffic. He
follows, processions. He controls crowds in fairs
and festivals. He guards the houses of the leaders.
He helps in floods and famines. He can fight the
fire also. He should not accept bribe. He should
become more responsible. The government should
raise his pay as he is very low paid. In case of his
death, his family should be provided for.
7) A Football Match
2) Village Life
Life in a village refers to the life of people living in
rural areas peacefully and calmly. Life in village is
beautiful and peaceful as people residing in villages
are close to nature. The major source of
employment for people in village life is agriculture
sector. Villages have the beautiful surrounding of
nature unlike cities and metropolitan areas. Life of
village is full of contentment and happiness as
people aren’t in hurry always unlike city life.
Pollution in village is less compared to cities as we
don’t have industries and traffic in rural areas.
People in village are more friendly and social in
nature compared to cities. Life in village is very
simple and majority of people are involved in
farming during day time. Villages lack basic
infrastructure and amenities compared to city life
yet people lead a satisfied life.
4) My Country
Pakistan is my country. Pakistan has 5
provinces and people mistakenly believe that there
are 4 provinces. Pakistan is a democratic country
which is being run on the principles of Islam. Allah
has bestowed many things to Pakistan for example
different seasons and abundant mineral resources.
Pakistan is a nuclear power with the 5th largest and
powerful army in the world. The national language
of Pakistan is Urdu and there are many languages
spoken in the country. Pakistan once had one of the
most burgeoning economies of the world, but now
everything is going towards utter devastation and
destruction.
6) A Hockey match
A very interesting hockey match was played
yesterday, it was played between our school team
and City School, and it was played on our school
playground.Many students came to see the match.
The teams entered the ground at 4.45 p.m. The toss
was in favor of our team. The referee blew the
whistle. The match started at 5 p.m.The game was
very brisk from the beginning. Our team tried their
best to score a goal but they could not succeed. The
Captain of the City School hit the ball and was
likely to score a goal. But it was saved by our goal-
keeper.The referee blew the whistle. It was interval.
After the interval, the match started again. Both the
teams tried their best to score goals. In the last
minute of the game, D.A.V. School was given a
penalty stroke. Their captain turned it into a goal.
Our school team lost the match by one goal.
 Last Saturday our school football team
played a match with Army Public School. It was
played in our school playground. A large number
of students of both the schools were present to
witness the match. At 2 p.m., the teams entered the
field and took their positions. After the toss, the
referee blew the whistle and the match began. Our
school football team played very well from the
beginning. We scored four goals before half-time.
After the interval, the teams changed the sides.
Army Public School had managed to score three
goals before the interval. They tried their best to
equalise the score. The captain of Army Public
School got the ball and scored an easy goal. The
referee blew the whistle and the game came to an
end. The exciting match ended in a draw.
9) My Ambition in life
My ambition in life is to become a doctor.
At present I am pained to see the doctors. They
have no love for their suffering patients. They are
after money. They prefer to work in big hospitals or
big cities. Very few of them are willing to go to
villages. Most of our villager suffer from diseases.
Many of them die for want of medical aid. My first
care as a doctor will be to serve in a village. I shall
give them the best medical treatment. I will not
charge any fee from really poor patients. Such is
my humble ambition. May god help me to realize
it!
11) Allama Iqbal
Allama Muhammad Iqbal, born on the 9th of
November, 1877, the man behind the ideology of
Pakistan and the great poet was born in Sialkot.
After having command over traditional languages
including, Persian, Arabic, and Urdu, he attained
his M.A. degree in Philosophy from the Scottish
Mission School. There are many people who love
to write about him and many placed where you
search an essay on Sir Muhammad Allama Iqbal.

have done to Muslim nations. Sir Allama Iqbal died
on the 21st of April, 1938, but his remarkable work

8) Quaid-E-Azam
Quaid-e-Azam was born in Karachi on 29
December 1876. His Father name Jinnah Punjab.
He completed his education first at Karachi and
then in England. On his return to India he started
his practice as a Lawyer He was an efficient
person. He joined the Indian National Congress but
soon left it and Joined the Muslim League with his
great and wish Leader-ship, He started long and
hard campaign to get a separate home land for the
Muslim. Finally he had succeeded it on 14th
August 1947. as newly created country Pakistan.
Quaid-e-Azam became Pakistan’s first Governor
General unfortunately only after twelve months of
creating of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam died on 11
September 1948.
10) Life in Big Cities.
Life in a big city is exciting and ever-
evolving. There are a lot of opportunities to learn
and grow for people residing in a big city. These
cities provide a chance to grow personally and
professionally. People living in these cities turn out
to be smarter than those living in the small towns
and villages owing to the kind of exposure they get.
Life in these cities is fast paced and only those who
have a smart bent of mind can survive here.There is
also a good scope of personal growth and
development in the big cities. Children living in
such cities have access to good schools and
colleges that do not just focus on the academics but
on the all round development of the students. These
educational institutes give the individuals a chance
to participate in various kinds of activities and
events to help them explore their interest. Besides,
there are a number of activities one can involve in
outside the school which help in personal growth.
