Lab Exercise 27.01: Examining Types of Printers

Step I To find information about inkjet printers, access the following Web site to complete
this step: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/inkjet-printer.htm/printable. If this link doesn't
work, you can also do a Google search and look for information about how inkjet printers
work.
a. Is an inkjet considered an impact printer, or non-impact?
Answer:
Most modern printers, including inkjet and laser printers don’t include an ink ribbon and
are considered to be non-impact printers.

b. What part of an inkjet printer moves the print head back and forth across the page?
Answer:
Carriage belt

c. List the two ways in which the droplets of ink are formed in inkjet printers.
Answer:
 A belt and motor move the carriage back and forth so the ink can cover the whole
page.
 Ink is ejected through tiny tubes.
a. Ink is heated bay tiny resistros or electroconductive plates at the end of each
tube.
b. The resistors or plates boil the ink, which creates a tiny air bubble that ejects a
droplet of ink onto the paper.

d. The type of paper used in an inkjet printer greatly influences the quality of the image
produced. What are the two main characteristics of inkjet printer paper that affect the
image the most?
Answer:
1. Brightness
Contrast is a key element between the ink and the paper. The whiter the paper, the
better your copies will look.
2. Caliper
Photo papers are heavier and thicker than typical multi-purpose papers. This
thickness, known as caliper, is necessary to accommodate the greater ink coverage
typically found in photos.
Step 2 For information about laser printers, access this site to complete this step:
www.howstuffworks.com/ laser-printer.htm/printable. Do a Google search or refer to the
textbook if this site isn't available.
a. What's the primary principle at work in a laser printer?
Answer:
The primary principle at work in a laser printer is static electrity, the same energy that
makes clothes in the dryer stick together or a lighting bolt travel from a thundercloud the
ground. Static electricity is simply an electrical charge built up on an insulated object,
such as a balloon or your body.
b. What moves the image from the drum to the paper?
Answer:
The printer’s internal laser beams the image onto a coated metal cylinder called a drum,
giving it a static charge. When the drum rolls around, the carbon toner particles with
opposite static charge attract to it, transferring to the paper.

c. Printer Control Language (PCL) and PostScript are both examples of what?
Answer:
Both PCL and PostSript are widely used amongst many Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEMs) of printers.

d. What's toner? Is it an ink, wax, or something else?

Answer:
Toner is a wax or plastic powder with a low melting temperature, it must be kept cold
while cleaning. Toner particles have electrostatic properties by design and can develop
static-electric charges when they rub against other particles, objects, or the interiors of
transport systems and vacuum cleaner hoses.

Step 3 Put these steps in the printing process of a laser printer in the correct order (don't
forget to reference the textbook as well):
Charge : Process
Clean : Charge
Develop : Expose
Fuse : Develop
Transfer : Transfer
Expose : Fuse
Process : Clean
Step 4 If you have access to a laser printer, open it and carefully examine the insides. Also
read the printer manual for details on the specifications. Access the manufacturer's Web site
for additional information.
If you don't have access to a laser printer, go to your local ofice supply or computer store and
ask a salesperson to show you the differences between various impact, inkjet (black and white
as well as color), and laser printers.
Look inside your laser printer.
a. What parts are easily removable and replaceable?
Answer:
Toner and paper.
b. Practice removing and reinserting the toner (see Figure 27-1) and paper.
FIGURE 27-1 A toner cartridge with its photosensitive drum exposed
* Warning
Remember to turn off and unplug the printer before removing anything but the toner or paper.
Also, be careful not to spill any toner inside the printer.
Look at the manual or the manufacturer's Web site for these specifications:
c. How much RAM can it hold?
Answer:
8 Mbytes.
d. How much effect does the amount of RAM have on the cost of a new printer?
Answer:
Unable to upgrade the RAM/ Not Applicable/ Unable to find.
e. Are the drum and toner separate, or are they one replaceable part?
Answer:
One replacable part.
f. What is the speed of the printer (pages per minute) ?
Answer:
18 PPM.
g. What is the quality of the output (resolution)?
Answer:
1. Fast Res 600.
2. Max Print Quality > Fast Res 1200.
h. What are the number and types of ink cartridges?
Answer:
1. One Black Cartridge.
2. CE285A.
i. What is the price if you were going to buy this printer new?
Answer:
$159.00.
j. What is the cost per page?
Answer:
4.2 cent per page.

 Hint
Most inkjet (and even laser) printers are priced very low, so they're affordable to buy initially.
Using them is another question. Calculate the cost of the ink and how many pages it'll print.
This calculation will amaze you. They're not so cheap after all.
k. What can you conclude from your research about the true total cost of printing, including
consumables (such as ink)?
Answer:
Much more cost for upkeep of the printer compared to the initial purchase price.
Lab Exercise 27.02: Installing a Printer in Windows
Step 1 Install the printer as a local printer on an individual PC, as follows:
a. Check the printer documentation, and see whether a setup utility should be
run before connecting the printer. If so, run it.
x Warning
In some cases you run into trouble if you allow Windows to autodetect a printer
and install a driver for it rather than letting the printer's setup utility do its thing.
(That's more common with older printers and older Windows versions than it is
today, fortunately.) Make sure you read the printer docs and do what is
recommended.
b. Connect the printer to your system via a USB port. Allow Windows to
detect it and set it up. If prompted for a driver, follow the prompts to search
for one online, or to use the driver on the optical disc that came with the
printer.

c. (Optional) If the setup disc that came with the printer has any extra utilities
on it that you want, install them from the disc. For a regular printer, there is
nothing you need there. For a multifunction device, however, you might
need to run that setup utility to enable features like copying, scanning, and
faxing.

Step 2 Now you'll install a printer (it could be the same printer or a different
one) as a network-enabled printer. When you connect a printer directly to the
network via its own network adapter, any computer on the neovork can use it.
 Note
When Windows references a printer, it doesn't mean the printer hardware; it
means an instance of the driver set up to be addressable in Windows. So you can
have multiple "printers" in Windows that all talk to the same physical printer.
This can be useful when you want different default settings for different kinds
of print jobs, for example.
a. Connect the printer to the network via its RJ•4S jack, or via its wireless
interface if it has one. Make sure the printer is powered on.
b. Open the Control Panel, and choose Hardware and Sound I Devices and
Printers I Add a Printer.
c. Select the printer from the list of network printers. You can tell it's a
network printer because it has an [P address. See Figure 27•2. Then click
Next.
d. If there is already a driver for the printer installed in Windows (for example,
if you installed one in Step I a message appears; click Use the driver that is
currently installed. Then click Next.
e. In the Printer Name box, change the name if desired. Then click Next.
f. Clear the Set as the default printer checkbox ifyou don't want this to be the
default.
g. (Optional) Click Print a test page if you want one. (Ask your instructor if
you should print one.)
h. Click Finish.

Step 3 Once a printer has been installed in Windows (either local or network),
you can adjust its settings. The thing is, there are three different places you can
adjust printer settings, and each one has different options. In the following steps
you'll take a tour.
a. Open the Devices and Printers section of the Control Panel (Hardware and
Sound I Devices and Printers).
b. Right-click the printer and choose Properties. A dialog box appears that
describes the printer (manufacturer, model, that sort of thing). See Figure
27-3.
c. There's not much you can do in this dialog box; click OK to close it.
d. Right-click the printer again, and choose Printer properties. An entirely
different dialog box opens. This one has a lot more going on, as you can see
in Figure 27-4.
e. In the following grid, list eight useful things you can do in this dialog box.
The exact options available will depend on your printer.
Tab Feature Useful Thing

f. Close the dialog box.

g. Right-click the printer again, and choose Printing preferences. In the
following grid, list four useful things you can do in this dialog box.
Tab Feature Useful Thing
h. On the Layout tab, click Advanced. A dialog box appears with additional
printing preference options. The choices available depend heavily on the
printer type and model. List four settings you can change in this dialog box
for your printer:

Lab Exercise 27.03: Supporting a Multifunction Device

Learning Objectives
In this lab, you'll research a multifunction device online. You'll find out its
capabilities and download the software needed to make it work. Then you'll
figure out how to access its network capabilities and get it connected to the local
network.
1. Brandon has sent a document to the printer, but the document never actually
prints. Where can Brandon check to see the status of the document?
Answer:
Brandon can check the status of the document from a small printer icon in
the lower right corner of the taskbar.

2. When Sally prints in color on her inkjet printer, the only color that appears
is yellow. What should she do?
Answer:
Replaced or refilled the cartridge, the printer will start printing properly.
