Title SIOP Model: “Interaction” and “Practice and Application”
Subject EDUC 359 Intro to ELL

Summary Students will be instructed about the fifth and six components of
of the the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, “Interaction” and
Lesson “Practice and Application”. The lesson will consist of a direct
instruction interactive lecture to introduce the topic’s critical
terms and concepts. The direct instruction will be followed by an
interactive activity and formative assessment.
Essential As a prospective teacher, how can the SIOP Model be used in your

Objectives Students in EDUC 359 will be able to:
• Briefly define what the “interaction” component of
the SIOP Model contains. (Level 1)
• Briefly define what the “practice and application”
component of the SIOP Model contains. (Level 1)
• List two ways prospective teachers can incorporate
the “interaction” and “practice and application” into
their lessons. (Level 1)

Procedure BEFORE
(2 Minutes) Statement of Objectives
(5 Minutes) Anticipatory Set: Teacher-Led Discussion Review
• Discussion: Have previous groups provide a brief review to the
class of the key takeaway from their component(s) of the SIOP
model that they instructed.

DURING:
(35 Minutes) Mixture of Direct Instruction and Teacher-led
Discussion- Instructor will work through PowerPoint Presentation
by instructing vocabulary, concepts, and providing examples to
scaffold learning.
• Engage class using questioning, formative assessment of
students and leads students to making conclusions and
conceptualizing the SIOP Model and its components, especially,
“Interaction” and “Practice and Application”.
• Instruct key vocabulary, breaking down each definition into
more accessible examples.
• During the PowerPoint presentation, students will be asked to
follow along and answer questions on a worksheet. This will
check for students understanding of the content on the
PowerPoint.
AFTER:
• (20 minutes) Students will play an engaging game of
Jeopardy. The questions are based on the power point
lesson which was taught. This is a review game used to
check for understanding, as well as to have students be
engaged during an interactive activity based on the material
taught.
• (10 minutes) Students will play a Kahoot game. The questions
are based on the lesson taught and will be used to check for
understanding.
