Caprino, Kathy. “What Is Feminism, And Why Do So Many Women And Men Hate It?” Forbes,

-many-women-and-men-hate-it/#648ccea7e8e6.

In the 2017 Forbes Magazine article titled “What Is Feminism, And Why Do So Many Women

And Men Hate It?” by Kathy Caprino, the author uses questions and steps for the audience to

mentally ask themselves what feminism and certain aspects of feminism means to them. She

states that, “Feminism at its core is about equality... not “sameness.” So many people offer up the

argument that women are not the “same” as men so there can’t be equality” (Caprino). The idea

that giving “weaker” persons a hand or and edge for an even fight rather than throwing a toddler

in the ring with a professional boxer. Caprino also addresses the negativity driven toward

feminism and why “so many people hate the movement.” As well as how sexuality and beliefs

factor into people’s opinions on feminism.

The author of this essay has previously written two books and regularly writes on gender

equality (ethos). The context of the article was feminism and what is is and the purpose of the

article is to educate and help people realize their views on it. The author likes to make lists of

her experiences, facts, and questions in order to make her writing more detailed and audience
Abdic2

based (author’s craft). The author used data (logos) to back up her research and added in links

that lead to what she researched. The author personalizes the article to each person reading it

wrote in a friendly tone (pathos). The author used personal experiences of what she saw in her

life, this is an anecdotal fallacy.

I will use this article in my essay to argue the side of pro feminism. This article fits really well

with what I am researching because it focuses on gender equality and I can argue some points in

the article in my essay. For instance, I will use the information about what the public thinks of

feminism in my article.

"Has Swedish Feminism Gone Too Far?" Youtube, uploaded by Europenews (in English), 8 Mar.

2013, www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HwfVPmFNlg. Accessed 20 Oct. 2019.

The Youtube video, "Has Swedish Feminism Gone Too Far?,” by Europe News made on March

8, 2013, discusses the drawbacks and concerns of modern feminism. In the video, the reporter

states that “Sweden is rated highly” in gender equality yet some worry that they are taking

feminism to the extremes. At one point the news reporter reveals that some spectators call it

“extremist feminism.” The video talks about the pee sitting down initiative for boys in Sweden

(making it mandatory to pee sitting down in public schools) and the politician Viggo Hansen,

who is the head of the campaign. It also shows new books that are read in schools with the brand

new “neutral” vocabulary word, hen, meaning he or she. Swedish schools make sure to teach

gender equality and say that they do not want to limit children to stereotypical roles as well.
Abdic3

The reporter interviewed politicians, school administrators, and published feminist authors to

build the report’s credibility (ethos) and to recieve the best information possible for the report.

The reporter lacks in pathos in the attempt to be neutral and unbiased in their report due to the

power of the news source’s ethos and overwhelming credibility. Europe News airs

internationally and their channel on Youtube has over one million subscribers and their video on

feminism racked up over 770,000 views. The video is from 2013 so the arguments and main

focuses of Swedish gender equality most likely has changed or developed into more complex

problems and concerns. The reporter only interviewed people who are pro gender equality and

feminists, they did not interview people who were against any of the feminist initiatives or the

modern lifestyle of politically “woke” Sweden. The video was biase. The context of the report is

Sweden’s new laws and position in the great gender debate. The purpose of the video is to reach

as many people across the world as possible to educate them and open their minds to new

possibilities. Learning about the benefits of gender equality will inspire people to stand up and

talk about underlying issues in society.

I will use the information in this video to support the argument of gender equality and discuss

how positive ways feminism is promoted and used in society. I will compare and contrast the

arguments in this video to other reports that have contradicting points of view to help show the

spectrum of feminism. Showing different types of arguments will help show society that not all

feminists are alike and that not all feminists have the same concerns or shared struggles that

majority may believe.

Khun, Kristine. Opinion: Say 'NO' to misandry. 11 Jan. 2016. LA Times, 11 Jan. 2016,

highschool.latimes.com/st-lucys-priory-high-school/opinion-say-no-to-misandry/. Accessed

13 Oct. 2019.

In the LA Times article, “Opinion: Say ‘NO’ to Misandry,” an illustration of a woman holding a

sign stating that women are better than men and another picture below it with the same girl that

has a sign saying that women and men are equal. The artist wants to get the point across to the

audience that feminism means equality between the sexes. The artist shows how feminism is

perceived and the miscommunication between the message of feminism and the so called

“feminists” that are a part of the cause. The illustration focusses on the modern feminist and how

they no longer promote equality. According to the artist, modern feminists believe they are above

men and look down upon them rather than be civil with them regarding political issues.

The purpose of the illustration is to inform people of the impact false ownership has on people

and how it has affected the reputation of the causes they’re “fighting for.” The context of the

picture is directed towards the negative message that women preach claiming to be feminists.

The image tells the story through emotion and pathos but lacks logos since it is a photo and has

no evidence or data to build off of. The credibility of the picture is built through the website it is

from (LA Times) and the artist, Kristine Kuhn. The artist uses imagery to bring their message

forward and show what they have observed in their daily life. The artist uses example of what

happens at protests and how feminists and seen and examples of what feminism actually means

and what the artist thinks should happen. The picture includes an either/or logical fallacy stating

that feminism is either taken one way or another.

The illustration fits in with my research because it depicts aspects of feminism that tend to be

more controversial to the public. My research is focussed on the sexism involved with feminism

and how feminism has pivoted from equility to the hate parade towards men. I will use this

image in my essay to show the false message that is spread by modern feminists. This image

backs up the argument that feminists are growing to be more and more sexist towards men and

the hypocrisy of the modern message.

Law, Bridget. “What Feminism Means Means Today.” APA.org. APA.org. Sept. 2006. Web. 7

Oct. 2019. https://www.apa.org/gradpsych/2006/09/feminism

APA.com’s (American Psychological Association) article “What Feminism Means Today,” by

Bridget Murray Law hopes to educate everyday people about modern feminism. According to

the author, APA Division 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) has had trouble conveying

the idea of feminism to people of color and the younger generations. The author mentions that

they have had the same 35 members participating in the division since the 1970’s. Law shows

statistics of the wage gap between men and women in psychology. At the start of their careers,

men already make $5,000 more than women, that eventually grows after some time passes and

difference becomes approximately $10,000. The gap shrinks towards the end of their careers to

around $7,000 but that is after 30 plus years of working.

This article is from a credible source and uses information and quotes from the president of

Division 35, Cynthia de las Fuentes, PHD. The article seems to stay on the more neutral side

while still supporting the idea of feminism and listing evidence to hold up the author’s claim.

The author hopes to spread the support of feminism and expand to younger and more diverse

audience. The article was written to show people that true equality has not yet been achieved,

and to convince people to keep up the fight for same pay. The article lacked pathos and

emotionally fueled text and focussed on research and logos.

I intend to use this article to support the idea that feminists are fighting for an actual, tangible

cause rather than being stereotypical “man-haters.” The idea of wage gap and lack of male

feminists proves that there are multiple angles to look at the research to help write my essay.

This article is on the pro-feminism side of the spectrum and provides interesting data that I will

put in my essay. The source fits with my research question because it touches on modern

feminism, which is what I am analyzing and questioning.

Ross, Kimberly. “Modern Feminism is No Less Sexist Than The Misogyny is Claims To Fight.”

Washington Examiner, 6 December 2018,

www.washingtonecaminer.com/opinion/modern-feminism-is-no-less-sexist-than-the-mis

ogyny-it-claims-to-fight. Accessed 27 October 2019.

In the 2018 Washington Examiner article, “Modern Feminism is No Less Sexist Than The

Misogyny is Claims To Fight,” by Kimberly Ross, the author accuses today’s feminists of being

sexist and of delivering a detrimental message to the modern world. She believes that extreme
Abdic7

leftists promote sexism targeted towards men and make sexism socially acceptable as long as it

is men on the receiving end. Ross feels that in order to be the “woke” culture people say they are,

they have to unite and stand together instead of “over correcting” and putting women before

men. Her solution is to stop promoting messages such as, “the future is female” and make

feminists more open to the idea of working together with all genders alike.

This article is biased and the author uses a lot of emotion (pathos) and imagery (author’s craft) to

convey her opinions in a strong sway against modern feminism. She uses some ethos by adding

in a tweet from Republican Senator Kristen Gillibrand, but fails to find more evidence to support

her claim. She continues to credit Gillibrand a few more times in the article and seems to only

quote her but does not say if it is for another source or not. She adds in statistics (logos) and

mentions the gap between Republican and Democratic women running for seats in the House of

Representatives. The author uses hasty generalizations in her article and believes that all

feminists are the same and have the same objectives and enemies. The purpose of this article was

to look into modern feminism and leftists, and talk about the corrections they can make going

forward with their messages. The tone if the article is a little aggressive but not completely

anti-feminist. The author does not renounce feminism completely, she wants to improve the

message of the social group and rather than tear feminists down.

I will use this article in my essay to back up the argument that today’s extreme feminists are

anti-male. Using this article will help diversify the evidence I collected and add different points

of view I can talk about. This author brought up different problems and had unique and simple
Abdic8

strategies which my other pieces of evidence did. This article will help elevate my research and

discussion.
