What is Bulimia?

Bulimia is a life-threatening eating disorder in which people


binge eat food and follow it by purging through self inflicted
vomiting or laxatives

Those with Bulimia will feel a loss of control


Who is affected?

Bulimia mainly affects female adolescents and young adults.

About 1.5% of females suffer from bulimia in their lifetime,


while only 0.5% of males are affected
Why?

● Fear of weight gain


● Lifestyle changes
● Abuse and trauma
● Negative body image

Those with Bulimia harshly judge themselves


and what they assume to be their flaws
Signs your loved one may have Bulimia

● Disappearance of large amounts of food


● Eating in secrecy
● Lack of control while eating
● Switching between overeating & eating nothing at all
● Smell of vomit
● Frequent use of bathroom after meals
Symptoms

● Being preoccupied with body image


● Fear of weight gain
● Repeated episodes of eating abnormally large amounts of food in one
sitting
● Feeling loss of control while binging
● Abusing laxatives, diuretics, and enemas
● Fasting, restricting calories, avoiding certain foods or excessive exercise
between binges
Bulimia can lead to...

● Heart Disease
● Mouth sensitivity and decay (Vomiting erodes the enamel)
● Fertility issues
● Gastric and esophagus ruptures
● Dehydration
● Electrolyte imbalance
Treatment

● Various Therapies
● Medication
● Seeing a dietitian
● Hospitalization in severe cases
